Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It‘s hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It‘s round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you‘ve got about a hundred years here. There‘s only one rule that I know of, babies—:
God damn it, you‘ve got to be kind.
Vonnegut has a distinct style & it‘s not for everyone. He can be incredibly crass, but then he writes a line that just cuts to the quick. This book delves into some of the PTSD & mental illness that he struggled with. As a Hoosier, I loved all the references to Indiana locations. Not my favorite Vonnegut, but certainly not my last. “Nobody can work with the poor and not fall over Karl Marx from time to time—or just fall over the Bible.”
A very rare month for me, to finish both Spin books: yay! Another great book by one of my favorite authors, my #DoubleSpin: a pick!
It didn't help me advance in the #PromptMaze Q3 (I am stuck for weeks now in a cell that wants a book Published in the 1980s, 1990s or between 2000-2010, all my recent reads were older or newer than that 😁) but it helped me in the Q4 maze.
Thanks again @TheAromaOfBooks for all these fun ways you help me read more!
@tpixie This is playing on Hulu in the U.S. now . Even more amazing than I thought it would be.Hopefully, it will be streaming sometime where you are .
Next year will be the 100th anniversary of Kurt Vonnegut, born on this day in 1922.
I love Vonnegut, I love the simplicity, I love the humor, I love the truth. He is easy to love

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Altruistic, alcoholic millionaire, and subsequent family black sheep, Eliot Rosewater, dedicates his life and money to helping others. A corrupt lawyer seeks to manipulate the Rosewater fortune by proving Eliot insane. Much more ensues. Vonnegut is the master of social satire. And, it‘s here we‘re introduced to prolific, yet utterly unknown science fiction author, Kilgore Trout, who goes on to appear in several other stories. #reread
"Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded... There's only one rule that I know of...God damn it, you've got to be kind." It has been far too long since I've read Vonnegut, & reading what is considered as one of his finest felt like coming home. Vonnegut is one of the great humanist American novelists & his story of class, greed and community love is as topical as ever. Plus, a Kilgore cameo!
I finished my first Vonnegut! I love good satire, and this did not disappoint. I absolutely love the way he writes. Now I can't wait to read Breakfast of Champions.
A refreshingly low-concept story that ends a bit more softly than I'd hoped, but features some truly beautiful passages. It's greatest strength is it's ability to guide the reader's attention, never once letting your engagement slip.
The cashier who sold me my book, who recognized me from high school, asked me if Vonnegut was any good. I told them that I'd enjoyed what of him I'd read, and that remains true.
There are some mornings where you need a cup of coffee, a good book, and a donut the size of your face. This is one of those mornings.

I had a fantastic weekend in Nashville with @cobwebmoth . Centennial Park was such a great place to walk and explore! The Parthenon is awesome! The statue of Athena is quite impressive. We found Cerberus there as well. I finally bought my first Vonnegut across the street from there.
Who else thinks that the AT&T building should have the Eye of Sauron on top of it?
I have owned this for such a long time. I think I bought it in high school. I really wanted to start 2019 reading something by a woman but since I‘ve owned this for so long, I think it‘s a great way to start reading what I own. Also it‘s really funny. I haven‘t read Vonnegut in a long time. I missed him.
Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies - "God damn it, you've got to be kind."
Last night I saw a musical version of God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater. “There's only one rule that I know of, babies-God damn it, you've got to be kind.” Those words, truer now than ever before.
This is perhaps the most Humanist novel by America‘s greatest 20th Century Humanist writer.
My fellow #littens, I received a phone call this week that some of the books I've left stored at my parents have succumbed to a bit of mildew, so I need to sort through the ones that remain and make some tough decisions. Among them is this trunk full of books. I'm in for a long evening.
One of the funniest books I've read in a while, God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater or Pearls Before Swine is the story of a Rockefeller type heir who leaves New York City, moves to Rosewater, Indiana, gives away his fortune to anybody who asks and loses his mind in the process. The novel introduces Vonnegut's alter ego Kilgore Trout. Highly recommend for an intro to Vonnegut's work #kilgoretrout #toughguybookclub #americanlit #vonnegut
The world needs more Eliot Rosewaters! 🤘🏽
Starting this on audio 🤘🏽
For the Vonnegut lovers among us

Full of black humor, this is Vonnegut at his best. Eliot Rosewater, heir of an immense amount of money, is considered to be insane because he doesn't care for it. Because he wants to share it with the poor and irrelevant people. He must be insane, for sure?! The irony is great, I had to laugh a lot reading this cynical portrait of modern America. #1001books
4/5, in that this was an average Vonnegut, but ultimately is still KVJ. One of his more complicated and intertextual novels, I felt distracted by references and inside jokes. However, the message rang true in our Post-Truth Plutocracy, where money is king, and being poor is an atrocity to America. The 1965 NYT Review (http://www.nytimes.com/1965/04/25/books/vonnegut-rosewater.html?_r=0) was interesting to compare the books legacy, 52 years on.
The satire and slightly cynical view of society are always relevant no matter how old the writing of Vonnegut gets.
I have to confess, I'm going to have to read this one as well. Yesterday when I started the audio I was riding in the backseat of my parent's car and when not driving or in the front I tend to get a little motion sickness so I close my eyes on longer trips. The narrator of this audio was a bit monotone. Yup, I did. So I missed some.
And we have Kilgore Trout mentioned! And 2BRO2!
Starting this one during the slightly over an hour trip from my parent's to my brother's.
#vonnegut #audiotravel
This was funny, smart, and deep. Classic Vonnegut.
For #publishedinthe1960s, I have several, but thought I'd share where I started with my #birthdaychallenge reading. I'm on 1976 now, BTW. Pictured in chronological order. The tagged book is what got me wanting to read more by Vonnegut!
Vonnegut takes a jab at both capitalism and socialism and everything in between. Ultimately it's human nature that he satirizes, the importance of wealth, and the empty definitions of sanity vs insanity.
Witty but at times lacks cohesion due to the introduction of too many peripheral characters.

Here are some of the books I'm attempting to read over winter break. 'God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater' is a present from a good friend who knows I'm obsessed with Kurt.
I feel like a broken record, but Kurt Vonnegut is the author of my #BooksToLiveBy. I feel so lucky to have discovered his work, as it has sharpened the way I look at the world. He is my kindred spirit! #litsyriotlive @Litsy
I've read it a few months ago and I was impressed/surprised how topical it is. Sadly, but some things never change...
#lazyphotochallenge
Finished 1st book of my #birthdaychallenge (idea credit: @TheNextBook ). I'm relatively new to Vonnegut; this book certainly shows the satire/dark humor he was famous for. Eliot Rosewater is a rich drunk who heads a foundation where all he does is hand out money to anyone who asks for it. He's a fan of the sci-fi writer Kilgore Trout. As I understand, Trout shows up often in other Vonneguts. The summaries of sci-stories penned by Trout are 🙌.
