Little Women | Louisa May Alcott
Louisa May Alcott's classic tale follows the lives of the four March sisters. Beautiful Meg, tomboyish Jo, fragile Beth, and romantic Amy may not have a lot of money while their father is off fighting in the Civil War, but the have each other and their friends. Follow the powerful story of love and friendship in the Calico Illustrated Classics adaptation of Alcott's Little Women.

I can't say that I'm totally in love with it, but I enjoyed it a great deal. There were a few moments that I've found a bit boring, but most of the time the adventures of four March sisters were quite charming. And there are definitely lessons in there that one can use today. 📚📚📖 #jumpstart2020 #littlewomen

Blh87 The new movie was SO good. I have to admit that I‘ve never read the book (shame on me), but I did see the earlier movie with Winona Ryder and co. It left me with a very strong distaste for all of the characters. HOWEVER, this version...SO FREAKING GOOD. Every character was amazing and badass in their very own way👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 4d

The ending, while satisfying, is not the one I would've liked after emotionally investing in a book that started off soooo slowly. I did enjoy the characters, their relationships, and the life lessons/experiences they shared along the way. However, I WILL be shipping Jo and Laurie as an OTP until I die. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Missed yesterday, so two today.

Little Women always has been & always will be my favorite classic. I can't count how many times I've read it. It first spoke to me as a child because my name is Amy. ☺ I have my late grandmother's copy, which is among my most treasured possessions. And I can't WAIT to see the new movie - going tomorrow! 😁

Lcsmcat It‘s so good! We went after Christmas and even the “boys” who didn‘t know the story ahead of time enjoyed it. 2w

About as perfect as a movie adaptation can get in my opinion. I still don‘t like the book honestly, I found the book‘s morality too dated for me, but I LOVED the movie, the script, the direction, the style and absolutely all of the actors. Controversial I know but for me this is the rare example of the movie being better than the book. Having said that, I would like to reread the book and try to see it more through Greta Gerwig‘s eyes.

Scochrane26 This is the first Little Women movie I‘ve watched (for some reason, I wasn‘t interested in the 90‘s version when I was a teen). The book was somewhat boring to me. I liked this adaptation because it explains more about how Amy & Laurie got together. I think most people don‘t like that pairing in the book. 2w
Julsmarshall I loved it too!! 2w
Kalalalatja I‘m not a fan of the book either 🤷‍♀️ 2w

kspenmoll I read the book at a very you g age & loved it. But then, I loved the era & read lots of fiction non fiction pre/post civil war. Knowing about Alcott‘s life helped to. 2w
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego Recently read the book, and felt the same as you did. But I did appreciate that Jo was based off Alcott & that she was a feminist that shunned social "norms" and never married irl. That's badass. I am looking forward to seeing the movie, and am glad to see positive reviews like this one. 2w
TheAromaofBooks I love this book, but my morality is a little dated as well, so maybe that helps 😂 2w
Cathythoughts We went to see this movie at the weekend & while it was visually beautiful , ...... I found the story very boring 🙈 #unpopularopinion 2w
e.queue Same! Grew up on the book, enjoyed but a little to moralistic for me. I loved this film. It added another dimension to the story for me and was so visually beautiful. Will definitely be rewatching. 2w

I‘m so glad I finally read this one. I thought I‘d read it before, but I think it was an abridged children‘s version. Or maybe I just saw the movie—the major plot points were not new to me but there was plenty I didn‘t remember.

For those that have read Little Men and/or Jo‘s Boys, should I read those as well? If they‘re not as good, I‘d rather skip them and end on a high note. ♥️

ravenlee I read Little Men (that‘s the second one, right?) and found it decent but nothing too memorable. In all fairness, I was nursing a newborn at the time who was always starving, so my memory of most things from that time is hazy. 😆 I didn‘t read the third. 2w
ravenlee And honestly, I‘ve read a few of Alcott‘s other works (serialized stuff) and nothing compares to Little Women. Not entirely a one-hit wonder, maybe, but close. 2w
Reviewsbylola Yes, that‘s the second one. Or I guess technically the third? Little Women is actually two books combined. Which is super confusing. @ravenlee 2w
Daisey I second @LeahBergen‘s comment. I‘ve read many of Alcott‘s books and enjoyed them, but Little Women is by far the best. The biography she mentioned is wonderful! 2w
Butterfinger I loved Little Men. As a child, I wanted to be a teacher to mean little boys like Jo. Dan will always be my favorite character and if you read Little Men you have to finish the series with Jo's Boys. 2w
Butterfinger I just read the comments and "dramatic gasp". ? 2w

Just got to cinema very excited to see little women! Im not a very big fan of the book, quite a lot of aspects I feel have dated badly, but there were some bits I liked and would love to have seen done again with more modern tastes driving it, so I‘m really excited to see this. I trust Greta Gerwig and would go to anything she made pretty much so I‘m really hyped to see how it goes!

I finished my reread of Little Women for #louisamay2020 and I really enjoyed it. This was at least my 3rd time to read the book. I did notice a few instances where characters got on my nerves—the male characters particularly. But I love the family dynamics, the charming aesthetic, and the emphasis on reading & writing. In the middle of my reread, my family saw the new LW movie and I really loved it and can‘t wait to see it again on DVD.

OMG this book is SOO boring. I can not believe that this is still a classic and how many times the movie has been remade. UGHH.

Overall I may not have enjoyed this book, but I did find it interesting. And parts of me see why others like it, and why people use it for character studies. For me, this will never be a book I recommend, but it will be a book I argue and debate.

Scochrane26 I read this during a recovery from an accident. I didn‘t have much to do, & a friend was great & brought me dvds & books. Like many classics for me, it was just ok. I wasn‘t sure if I didn‘t love it because the book is boring or because I was already bored. I haven‘t seen any of the movies but do want to see the current one, mainly because of the actresses in it. Think this will be the rare case of liking a movie more than the book. 3w
Hooked_on_books Apparently Alcott herself wasn‘t a fan of it, so you‘re in good company! 3w
Librariana So...... I haven't read this... and I genuinely don't know if I even want to! I'm familiar with the story... and I guess in my mind that's enough to justify going and picking up modern retellings of this classic (and others!) ? I read the graphic novel "Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy" and found it to be ok, especially for a younger audience. I did go ahead and pick up 3w
Librariana We'll see how the ⬆️ linked title turns out. Is that something you'd consider reading, Ryan? A modern retelling of a classic or even a graphic novel version of such? @Hooked_on_books - Holly, I had NO idea Alcott felt that way about her own work! 3w
LibrarianRyan @Librariana I would read a retelling. And a GN. I love to see how they stand up to the original. 3w

I haven't read Little Women for a loooong time--high school? middle school?--and decided to re-read (via Scribd) before the new movie comes out. I had maintained some familiarity with the source material: I taught, for years, Geraldine Brooks's March, a modern novel detailing the events of the original book from the perspective of Mr. March while he was away from his family. Brooks combines her knowledge of Louisa May Alcott's novel, ⬇️

UnabridgedPod which was quite autobiographical, with details from Alcott's own family and life. As part of our study, I showed the film version starring Winona Ryder and Claire Danes, which I loved. But I had forgotten just how much the book left out.⠀

It was, therefore, a revelation to read the book again. (SPOILERS AHEAD) It contains, of course, the famous scenes: Amy burning Jo's book, Jo selling her hair for her father, Beth's illness & eventual death, ⬇️
3w
UnabridgedPod Meg's various revelations about her vanity . . . and, of course, Laurie's ill-fated proposal. But there's much more character development and so many scenes I'd forgotten entirely about. This one is well worth revisiting, and I am SO looking forward to watching the new film. I'd also recommend the book on audio--I listened to the version narrated by Kate Reading, and her interpretation was beautiful. ⬇️ 3w
UnabridgedPod Who else loves Little Women? When is the last time you read it? And has anyone seen (or is anyone going to see) the new film? 3w
TheAromaofBooks I love this book so hard, although it has been way too long since I've read it. I'm always scared to watch movie versions of it, although this one does look good so maybe I'll give it a try. 3w
UnabridgedPod @TheAromaofBooks I listened to a review of the movie on NPR‘s Pop Culture Happy Hour, and it confirmed my desire to see it! 3w

This book has been just one of the many blueprints of my life since I was twelve years old. Louisa May Alcott wrote a masterpiece and it remains timeless 150 years later. The book is the epitome of what it means to be, not only a women in nature, but human. Although he setting is over 100 years old, it remains modern and relevant. Forever one of my favorite tales of all time.
