The Girl from The Savoy
The Girl from The Savoy: A Novel | Hazel Gaynor
Presenting a dazzling new historical novel … The Girl From The Savoy is as sparkling as champagne and as thrilling as the era itself. ‘Sometimes life gives you cotton stockings. Sometimes it gives you a Chanel gown …’ Dolly Lane is a dreamer; a downtrodden maid who longs to dance on the London stage, but her life has been fractured by the Great War. Memories of the soldier she loved, of secret shame and profound loss, by turns pull her back and spur her on to make a better life. When she finds employment as a chambermaid at London’s grandest hotel, The Savoy, Dolly takes a step closer to the glittering lives of the Bright Young Things who thrive on champagne, jazz and rebellion. Right now, she must exist on the fringes of power, wealth and glamor—she must remain invisible and unimportant. But her fortunes take an unexpected turn when she responds to a struggling songwriter’s advertisement for a ‘muse’ and finds herself thrust into London’s exhilarating theatre scene and into the lives of celebrated actress, Loretta May, and her brother, Perry. Loretta and Perry may have the life Dolly aspires to, but they too are searching for something. Now, at the precipice of the life she has and the one she longs for, the girl from The Savoy must make difficult choices: between two men; between two classes, between everything she knows and everything she dreams of. A brighter future is tantalizingly close—but can a girl like Dolly ever truly leave her past behind?

The Savoy, a #grandhotel of London, features prominently in this work of historical fiction. Has anyone read it? I haven‘t (yet).

Good. Enjoyed how it promises to be a light hearted read about the dancing girls of the 1920's but then deals with darker issues. Recommend.

The perils of borrowing from the library 😂.

This was obviously being used as a bookmark and is only on Chapter 1 so I don't know whether that is a reflection of the book 😂 and thankfully it doesn't look used 🤧

Meaw_catlady I get so many books returned with tp used as bookmarks at my library. I always wonder why !? There are so many better options for bookmarks! 2mo
Kaye I‘m always put off when I get a book that has a bookmark that close to the beginning. I always think it must not be good or they would‘ve read further. I could be guessing wrong, but it‘s usually like a sign to me. I know...weird, huh ? 2mo
Birdsong28 @Kaye I have read another book by this author so I'm not not that put off and I took out another book with this one by the same author and I can't put it down!!! But sometimes it's not the author but the subject matter as some are really good in one genre but not in another. I know what you mean tho. 📚📖 2mo
Birdsong28 @Meaw_catlady I bet you do! Sometimes it's just simply forgetting. There certainly are. 📚📖 2mo
Kaye That‘s good. I hope you like it then. I think we all have our little book quirks. I may be missing out on good books with this quirk. 😮 2mo
LeahBergen Oh God! Physical proof that someone read it while on the toilet! 🤢😆😆 2mo

We are preparing to move, and I should be packing... but I also made a new year resolution to read for at least 30 minutes a day. That takes priority... right?!?!

I‘m pretty sure this book is set in the 1920‘s so I‘m hoping to use it for the #LRC!

I may not have read as much as I hoped today (damn vertigo), but I did do a little book shopping. Love #bookoutlet and their 50/50 sales. I couldn't resist a bundle of $2 (ish) books! #bookhaul #iregretnothing #happybibliophage

Zelma Ooh, I wanted to do some shopping tonight and historical fiction is my jam. Thanks for the heads up! 2y
AlaMich Vertigo is the WORST! I'm lucky in that the episodes have decreased as I've gotten older but they can be so debilitating. 2y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Zelma You're welcome! It's my jam as well, so I did very well. 😎 2y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @AlaMich Glad your episodes are decreasing. Mine have been getting worse over the course of fifteen years. We think maybe we finally know why. Hoping to have some confirmation after testing in a few weeks. Then we can finalize a treatment plan. Crossing my fingers. 2y
kspenmoll Barbara so glad you may have medical knowledge/ plan to help. 2y
ValerieAndBooks Fingers crossed for you @BarbaraTheBibliophage . I have mild vertigo now but at one time it was really bad, so I understand how you must feel. I had to disable The parallax effect on my iPhone back when it was a new feature and looking at fast-moving objects on any screen makes me ill. Hope today's a good day for you ! 2y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @kspenmoll Thanks Katherine. I'm hopeful but at the same time trying not to get my hopes up. If the imaging proves we should proceed with treatment, I am in for major surgery. So it's kind of a mixed bag of excited and scared feelings. 2y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @ValerieAndBooks Thanks. I'm sorry you have vertigo too. I sometimes have reactions - like a feeling of disequilibrium - watching some movies or TV. It's no fun. Hoping today improves as well! 2y
AlaMich @BarbaraTheBibliophage Surgery does sound scary but if it can eliminate the vertigo...🤞for you!! 2y
kspenmoll Keep us posted. Facing surgery is scary; but amazing what can be done now to help. Sending ❤️ 2y

Very lovely book! I really like Hazel Gaynor's work. This one is primarily about a girl named Dolly, who has dreams of being more than a maid. Set in the 1920's and explores the impact of WWI on Dolly and others. #historicalfiction #womenauthors

I'm using this book to complete #LRC2 #girlstitle for the #LitsyReadingChallenge

I really love Hazel Gaynor's writing style. Her books always leave me feeling better about life and her newest is no different. I think it would make a great audio book, narrated by Kate Winslet. If you love historical fiction, give Hazel Gaynor a go. #24in48 #readathon

Love how the author paints a vivid picture of the eras she writes in--the Roaring 20s, Savoy hotel & London's theater scene are brought to life. Swept away by this historical romance. You could read it with a cuppa but I say put on some 20s music & make this Earl Grey Gin Fizz w/ homemade tea syrup.

Lakesidemusing I picked up The Girl Who Came Home as a kindle daily deal, but haven't read it yet. Have you? 3y
DebinHawaii @Lakesidemusing No, it's on my Kindle too but have not read it--though I want to based on this & her second book 'A Memory of Violets' 3y
