Mehso-so

After really enjoying her two most recent books, I realized I needed to delve into Liz Moore‘s backlist. This is her debut and not nearly as good. It‘s a classic type lit fic rather than her more recent literary thrillers. Kel is a compelling character, but the other major character, Arthur, is such a sad sack that I struggled with his bits. There‘s also a dearth of female voices.

ChaoticMissAdventures Litsy says I read this and gave it a So-so also. Funny thing is I have zero memory of this book. 1mo
Hooked_on_books @ChaoticMissAdventures I‘m not surprised. I finished it yesterday and I feel it drifting away already. 1mo

#August2024

Arthur Opp weighs 550 pounds and hasn‘t left his rambling Brooklyn home in a decade. Twenty miles away, in Yonkers, seventeen-year-old Kel Keller navigates life as the poor kid in a rich school and pins his hopes on what seems like a promising baseball career. The link between this unlikely pair is Kel‘s mother, Charlene, a former student of Arthur‘s.

EadieB Told with warmth and intelligence through Arthur and Kel‘s own quirky and lovable voices, Heft is the story of two improbable heroes whose connection transforms both their lives. This is a great book about an overweight 550 pound professor and a student who corresponds for 20 yrs. with secrets. She has a son who wants to be a major league baseball player. She is an alcoholic who ends up taking her life. 1mo
EadieB He is searching for his father and then he meets Arthur through his letters. Arthur hires a housekeeper as he is preparing to clean up his house for when Charlene is coming over. His housekeeper, Yolanda, is pregnant and they become friends. It is a wonderful story that is so down to earth that is keeps the pages turning until the very end. I'm now looking forward to the next book from Liz Moore. 1mo
EadieB Her writing is unbelievable and I'm sure you will love this book. Highly recommend! 1mo

I wasn‘t quite sure what to expect from this one- but it‘s been on my TBR for quite a while! The audio version is wonderfully performed- and great for #audiocoloring! That ending though.... it‘s sooooo abrupt and I feel cheated out of the scene the whole book was building towards!!! Still, I did enjoy listening and would tentatively try another from this author!

Adoring this so far, I‘m about halfway through. It follows Arthur Opp, a 550 pound man who hasn‘t left his home for nearly 20 years, and Kel, the son of his ex student. Liz Moore‘s writing is so easy to sink into and it flows so well. I loved her other novel The Unseen World too which I read last year. I will definitely be reading more of her stuff!

#TimbitTunes Its been awhile since I posted about this book. Lots of #lonelylonely people inside theses pages, yet the story never feels bitter, sentimental or sappy. Arthur Opp is a shut in, a former professor who hasn‘t left his home in years due to his weight. When a former student reaches out to him, his whole life is turned inside/out and it‘s perfect. The only thing that “ruined” this book was the ending. #INeedABow #UghLooseEnds

JennyM I don‘t think this book gets enough love. But I know what you mean about the ending. And I nearly posted it for yesterday‘s prompt (edited) 6y

Loved it! Heft had so much “potential” to turn into a sappy, Hollywoodian feel-good movie type of book, but it just steers away from all the typical pitfalls and comes out on the other side with its self respect intact. Liz Moore is awesome. And the audiobook narration was perfect as well!

Arthur Opp weighs 550 pounds and hasn‘t left his New York home for a decade.

The Times called this book “The most unsentimental sentimental journey you will read this year”, and Colum McCann called it “a suspenseful, restorative novel”.

I agree. A beautiful, sensitive, sometimes funny portrayal of the true weight of weight.

#MarchintoReading #BookishPetPeeves Ugh!!! If there's one thing I can't stand, it's a #crappyending 😠I don't like loose ends, neatly wrapped in a bow endings, rushed endings or stories that require suspension of belief. These three reads each fell into one of those categories, which ultimately changed my rating/ feeling towards the novel. Mischling is still a must read because the writing was everything and the story is important.

lynneamch I felt similarly about Picoult's Leaving Time. It was worth reading as it taught me something about elephants and animal sanctuaries, but the ending seemed like a cop-out to me. 8y

I'm highlighting this passage, not because it had anything integral to do with the book's plot, but because I'm a knitter and I felt for this boy, a cool kid, high school athletic star, who wished he could knit and do something with his hands while he waits for his mother at the emergency room. But about the book: I loved it. It's not action-packed, but rather character driven. Likable, yet sad and lonely characters. The ending is hopeful.

Nonetheless, it was an interesting read that kept me waiting for the two parallel stories to merge. Overall, it was a great book. Megabooks Oh wow @NovelGirl82 !! That's a lot. I know it will feel good when you're finished! 8y
Cinfhen I read this book and it totally worked for me on paper. I'm not a fan of audio books but I get why they are awesome for others. Good luck with move....it's tough but hopefully the ultimate prize😌 8y
Megabooks Thanks @Cinfhen ! Kel's narrator was just ok, which was a bummer. I'll do a review soon. I can't decide how I feel about the story yet. You should definitely read this if you haven't! 8y
Cinfhen @Ebooksandcooks Unseen World has been stacked but now I need to get a hold of it! I really enjoyed Heft until the final few pages...I thought the ending was a big let down😡 Good luck today with your apt search❣ 8y
Megabooks Thanks @Cinfhen ! Unseen World is a must! One of the best few books of the year for me. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 The ending of Heft did suck. That's why I didn't like it, but it's well written, so I'm confused for a review. 8y

I just started listening to this. I hope I enjoy it as much as Unseen World! I'm so tired these days from move prep, I don't want to read at night. Audiobooks have been wonderful and kept me away from trashy TV. 😉😃

Megabooks Plus I've moved up to 1.5 speed! Woo hoo! 8y
BookishFeminist 😂 you have been really going at this audiobook thing. I love it! It saves me from trashy tv, too. 8y
Megabooks @BookishFeminist Honestly between Bandit being sick, the upcoming move, and the associated 5 day trip, I just don't want to look at my Kindle, and I'm too tired to hold up a paper book. 😂😂 cheers 🍻 to audiobooks! 8y
ItsAnotherJen This sounds like a great read!! Added it. I love audiobooks now too. I usually have 2 that I'm working on alongside my regular book. (Then I usually have a book queued up on my kindle app to read inbetween my regular books😂) I ❤ what technology has done for books! 8y
Megabooks @JenFowler I'm really enjoying it. It is well narrated and the plot is engaging. It's on sale on audible for $4.95 right now if you do that. I'm not ready to listen to two at once though, but I am in the middle of two ebooks! 8y

I choose Heft by Liz Moore as #underhypedbook for #Augustphotochallenge. I found heaps of attention and buzz placed on Jami Attenberg's The Middlesteins instead. It's so underwhelming and not nearly as well-written or interesting as Heft. They are similar in content of story, but I think it's a real shame more attention was given to Attenberg's.

Oh crap! I feel cheated!!! Betrayed! Now my love affair is over...and I'm a bit broken hearted.💔 Until I turned the last page Heft was everything I look for in a novel. A cast of memorable characters, strong writing, genuine, real, poignant, relevant, human and then it f@cking ended.

Sometimes you read a book and it manages to carve out a spot in your heart. Heft has done just that! As much as I want to finish the book, I'm not ready to let go of these characters. Really loving this read❣

"Baseball is the loneliest sport to play for someone who does not have a father" I'm really loving the writing and ability of Liz Moore to capture such complex vulnerability.
