'WHAT A TREAT. GLAMOROUS AND NOSTALGIC AND VERY SEXY, CAPE MAY IS A NOVEL ABOUT MARRIAGE, LUST, SHABBY SEASIDE TOWNS AND LOTS OF GIN. BRILLIANTLY UNSETTLING - ONE OF THOSE BOOKS THAT STAYS WITH YOU' Paula Hawkins Cape May, New Jersey. September 1957. Newlyweds Henry and Effie arrive from Georgia for their honeymoon. It's the end of the summer season, and as they tentatively discover each other - walking on the deserted beach overlooking the vast, darkening Atlantic, clumsily making love in the dusty rooms of a distant relative's house - they begin to realize that everyday married life might be disappointingly different from their happy-ever-after fantasy. Just as they get ready to cut the trip short and leave Cape May, a light goes on in one of the houses on their street. In that one moment their destiny is altered forever. A glamorous set suddenly disrupt their newly-formed married life and sweep them up into their drama: there's Clara, a beautiful socialite who feels her youth slipping away; Max, a wealthy playboy and Clara's lover; and Alma, Max's aloof and mysterious half-sister, to whom Henry is irresistibly drawn. The empty town becomes their playground, and as they sneak into abandoned summer homes, go sailing, walk naked under the stars, marvel at the power and beauty of their bodies, experiment with love and sex, and drink massive amounts of gin, Henry and Effie slip from innocence into betrayal, with consequences that reverberate through the rest of their lives.

I wanted to like this book so much more than I did. The end got a bit crazy sexually and it left me a bit unsettled.

I knew this book would be trashy, but it was worse than I imagined. It was a poorly written faux erotica masquerading as wannabe literature (or maybe this is the kind of romance men like to read?). I was fine with it being bad until there was such a chasm of consequence between the male and female protagonists following the events of the book. It feels like this book missed an opportunity to make a comment rather than pulling a ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ #cattail

A newlywed couple go on honeymoon and meet up with an old friend of the bride who gets them involved in a decadent summer party lifestyle and leads them astray. An idea #summerread, this draws comparisons with the Great Gatsby. It's poignant at times, but a great read.

Thank you NetGalley and Celadon Books for an Advanced Reader‘s Copy of this book. I have to say the book blurb does not match up to this story. It is written as psychological suspense which is it not. This is a pretty messed up story about a newly wed couple who ends up hanging out with a not so great group of people durning their honeymoon., This book made me feel really icky and dirty. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this one.

bookandcat I started this one for NetGalley and had to put it down for a bit, it just felt sex-obsessive in the beginning of the book and I was not feeling pulled to read more (it made me feel icky too). 6mo

Jerdencon @MoonWitch94 it was good - not great. A few too many sex scenes for me (think I'm getting old 🤣😀). Bit descriptions of cape may were good. (edited) 6mo

I was swept up in this beach read set in the 1950‘s, of a young married couple on their honeymoon in Cape May. This book takes the reader on a journey from dumb, young innocence to sultry, sexy lust. Chip Creek has created this story (fantastic writing and gorgeous beach scenes) that shows how quickly one action can lead to a dizzy, winding path that will forever change the participants. I loved the book, but it was too steamy for my taste.

Cape May is a book With a lot of references to sexual acts and body parts. It may not suit all, but never did I feel they were inappropriate or gratuitous. Chip Cheek is taking the reader on a voyage of self-discovery with The main characters, Effie and Henry, and the journey isn‘t always a comfortable one. I thought Cape May was sensitively and honestly written, atmospheric and affecting. OI‘ll be thinking about it for some time.

Cape May gave me serious Great Gatsby vibes! Effie & Henry are on their honeymoon in 1950‘s Cape May. It‘s the off season, so they are bored and lonely until they fall in with a glamorous, free spirited crowd. Cape May is an exploration of love, adultery, and their consequences.

Warning: sexism.

As you can see from the graphic (credit: Celadon Books), Effie & Henry have a booze soaked honeymoon!

Pick, mostly.
Newlyweds honeymoon in Cape May, New Jersey. After a couple days with virginal, compulsory sex they‘re bored and want to just go home. Then they meet some old childhood frenemies vacationing nearby, and their inhibitions are overcome, with disastrous consequences.
Lots of gin, lots of sex.
Thanks to #netgalley

Cape May is a debut novel coming out from Celadon Books at the end of April, and I'm calling it - this is going to be one of THE summer reads of 2019. Coastal NJ in the off season, 1957 newlyweds and plenty of shenanigans with the only other people at the shore. Will this marriage survive?
If you don't like to read sex this is not the book for you.

squirrelbrain Might be good for #newjersey in the ReadingUSA challenge! 7mo

I recieved this book from a goodreads giveaway and am giving my honest opinion. This book started a bit slowly, but honestly I think that was the point. I really enjoyed this story. It's not a new story, it's been told, but I loved the way Chip told it.
I felt all the emotions reading this book.
Pick it up and give it a chance.
