Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake
Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake | Sarah MacLean

She does not fire a pistol, and she never gambles at a gentlemen's club.Lady Calpurnia Hartwell has always followed the rules, rules that have left her unmarriedand more than a little unsatisfied. And so she's vowed to break the rules and live the life of pleasure she's been missing. But to dance every dance, to steal a midnight kissto do those things, Callie will need a willing partner. Someone who knows everything about rule-breaking. Someone like Gabriel St. John, the Marquess of Ralstoncharming and devastatingly handsome, his wicked reputation matched only by his sinful smile. If she's not careful, she'll break the most important rule of allthe one that says that pleasure-seekers should never fall hopelessly, desperately in love . . .

I love Sarah MacLean but hadn't read this earlier series of hers -- it's just as good as her later work, with all the classic MacLean elements -- headstrong heroine, hero irresistibly drawn to her, a great surrounding cast of characters, and of course wit and romance to burn.

Years of playing by society‘s rules has done nothing for Lady Calpurnia Hartwell. Despite her fortune, she is too plain, too plump, and too lacking in confidence to snare a husband. Watching her younger sister plan her wedding inspires Callie to re-examine her life. So she makes a list of rules she plans to break and enlists Gabriel St. John, a charming rogue, as her partner in crime.

Light and breezy. Predictable plot, but fun read.

Because apparently one copy of Nine Rules to Break isn‘t enough, I ordered the UK edition. I feel much safer now.

Brilliant! When a plain Jane spinster decides she has nothing to lose by breaking a few gender rules she finds adventure and love when her teen crush finally takes notice. #romantsy #osrbc

An entertaining & cute historical #romance that's also feminist af. Bless Sarah Maclean!

Callie is tired of being the good girl & following the rules, so she comes up with a list of adventures she would like to experience: drinking, fencing & gambling being just a few of them. Because why not? But what if a handsome aristocrat comes in the picture?
Bonus: a witty Italian débutant as a backup character :)

Kicking off #24in48 readathon with picking up "Nine rules to break when romancig a rake", the first volume in the Love by Numbers series. If it's anything like the excellent Rules of Scoundrels series, I am in for a treat!

Are you a public librarian who would like to expand your foreign language romance collection? Do you know one who might? Please help me find the floor of my bedroom once more!

I've got foreign editions and am eager to donate them to good library homes. Message me if you have one? Thanks!

LibrarianRyan I would love to but I am no longer in a public library that does fun stuff like that. We are boring gov docs and Lincoln history. 3y

This book was really great! A romance story where the main character isn't your typical small and delicate girl. She is a woman with curves who thinks she isn't beautiful. She learns that she is beautiful and falls in love with a guy who thinks she is as well, just as she is! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Callie and Ralston by suburbanbeatnik

Nine Rules is one of my favorite novels and in my romance hall of fame. Callie Hartwell is just a regular woman who decides she's going to live life on her terms, and that's pretty radical in the early 19th century. Finding a man who listens, loves, and supports her is icing on the cake.

#TBT to 2010 and my first visit to Brooklyn. The very first place I wanted to go was WORD Bookstore in Greenpoint, so I did! A bookseller there handsold me a @sarahmaclean book within two minutes of my arrival, and I've loved all her books ever since. In honor of Sarah joining @Litsy and her love of Edna St. Vincent Millay, here's a photo of that book with my cat, Millay. (Now go follow Sarah, she's the best!) 💕💕💕

Funny, entertaining historical romance about a plainjane wallflower named Callie and the man she's admired from a far, Gabriel, a dude with a notorious rep with the ladies. Add in an entertaining surrounding cast. Plus an easy to follow plot that doesn't feel needlessly drawn out.

Okay, I'm going to be sad when this book is over. As someone just getting into reading lots of different romance novels, I feel like this is ringing more of my bells than other historicals I've tried previously. I just love Gabriel and Callie, I can't even explain.

This is one of my guilty pleasure books, but it was a lot of fun. I laughed out loud a few times. Anyway, I saw this on a list of book recs with a "larger" female character who doesn't end the book happier just because she lost a bunch of weight. Good one if you're looking for a fun, fast read!

Starting McLean's Love By Numbers series and it's a fun wallflower turned rebel story. Plot lines like dressing as a man to get into a gentleman's club is cliche but she fits it well into a narrative of female (upper class, British, white, 1800s) empowerment. that I bought in.

Lindseyastin This sounds adorable! And loved the one book of hers I've read! 4y
BestOfFates *ARE cliche! Ugh, the inability to edit posts here just torments me. 4y
Ubergeekygirl This was super cute, I loved it. I think this is my favorite of this genre. 4y
BestOfFates @Ubergeekygirl it was just fun! And it didn't go down any of the sad cliche paths I feared it would! (The list getting lost/stolen, him reading it w/out permission, even the bet reveal was handled well!) 4y

I read this book today and while it had a few eye roll moments, I enjoyed it! The heroine is described as very curvy and one scene she gets new lingerie and loves how it makes her feel. As a big person, nothing makes you feel more confident than lingerie that fits! I 💗details like that in a book.
