Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe
Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe | Heather Webber
23 posts | 10 read | 36 to read
Nestled in the mountain shadows of Alabama lies the little town of Wicklow. It is here that Anna Kate has returned to bury her beloved Granny Zee, owner of the Blackbird Caf. It was supposed to be a quick trip to close the caf and settle her grandmothers estate, but despite her best intentions to avoid forming ties or even getting to know her fathers side of the family, Anna Kate finds herself inexplicably drawn to the quirky Southern town her mother ran away from so many years ago, and the mysterious blackbird pie everybody cant stop talking about. As the truth about her past slowly becomes clear, Anna Kate will need to decide if this lone blackbird will finally be able to take her broken wings and fly. Lynnsoprano Looks interesting! 5d
Amandajoy I saw somewhere describe this as Garden Spells meets Fried Green Tomatoes & I loved Garden Spells. I‘m going to have to pick this one up. 5d

CoffeeNBooks @Amandajoy I haven't read Garden Spells yet, but I've read Fried Green Tomatoes, and I think that's probably an accurate description of this book! 5d
Amandajoy I‘ve read Garden Spells but not Fried Green Tomatoes. How is the audiobook? 5d
CoffeeNBooks @Amandajoy I really like it. I tend to be pretty picky about narrators, but this one is great- perfect for the story. 5d
MrBook Ooh, I have this one! 😁 5d
Clwojick Bumping this up on my TBR list. I've had it saved on CloudLibrary for a while now. 5d

#Movember #day6 #Crave The novel I‘ve just finished fits this prompt perfectly. Anna Kate, the new owner of the cafe craves home & family, her patrons at the cafe crave the messages from loved ones her pies bring, Natalie craves strength & independence, Cam & Aubin both crave peace. Seelie craves having her son back & Pebbles just craves the company of Otis. Everyone in this town has something or someone they crave. #lovemakestheworldgoround

Cathythoughts I could eat the cover of that book 🙃 it‘s so gorgeous 1w

What a lovely book this was! Reminded me very much of Garden Spells & Practical Magic.Set in small town Alabama, it‘s the story of a cafe,a family secret, blackbirds & mulberry trees. All swirled up with a large dash of magic. If you loved The Sparrow Sisters or any other sweet magical realism story, you‘ll love this as well. I‘m so happy I stumbled over it, I really hope the author writes more Wicklow stories.🥧🍒 #Booked2019 #FoodOrBeverageOnCover

Sace Oh that looks good. Set in Alabama is an added bonus! 1w

Next up is this sweet magical realism novel set in a small southern town. Why is it that most MR stories are set in either New England or the Confederate states? Is it because those places are so rich in folklore?🤔Anna Kate has been called back to Wicklow, Alabama after the death of her grandmother. Desperate to move on, she finds out in the will, Zee has a condition that Anna Kate try to make the cafe work, but can she live with the gossip?

robinb This is on my TBR as well. Enjoy! 1w

Decided to take a walk and listen to an audiobook on this beautiful fall but chilly day. @DeweysReadathon

NomiReads My puppy does not like walks (?!) but if she did I would be walking with an audiobook. Instead we are both on the porch. She loves watching other dogs walk by on their walks haha! 3w
Callemarie @NomiReads 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂 3w
BethM @NomiReads mine is too ADD to go on walks 😂 2w
Callemarie @BethM oh believe me moose is too. I find he listens better if I just let him walk beside me and dont hold the leash. But I can only do that if his electric collar is charged. Hes to cray cray to trust haha 2w

I feel so much better, managed to get my nana nap in!Though I‘ll still probably only manage a few hours past midnight before flaking. Bk2 in my #libraryhaul is a magical realism. Anna Kate has returned to Wicklow, a small town at the foot of the Alabama mountains, to bury her Granny Zee, the owner of the Blackbird Cafe, then leave. But she becomes drawn to the cafe & the famous blackbird pie. #Scareathlon #TeamSlaughter 1point #PointsTotal-1,125

JPeterson I love your skeleton bee! I have a few like that - octopus, squid, and a gorilla. They are adorable! 3w

Anna Kate returns to the small hometown of her family to take over a cafe after the death of her grandmother.

This was a very quiet book. Some family drama, some mystery, some magic. But nothing big or flashy. And that was good. We need the slow, quiet stories sometimes to remind us of the smaller, and more intimate stakes in stories and life.

I didn‘t like the framing this with a reporter. It distracted me from the rest of the story. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

I was challenged by by a fellow Bookstagrammer to do the #alphabetbookchallenge! She assigned the letter W, which I was excited about, since one of my favorite characters was the perfect pick for the this!

Author: Heather Webber
Book title: The Widows it Malabar Hill
Character: Weylyn Grey from Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance

What W books would you pick for each topic?

What is your favorite kind of pie? Before today, I would have said pumpkin pie and chocolate cream pie but now I‘m adding s‘mores pie to the list!

RaimeyGallant Unpopular opinion: I don't much like pie crust. I'll eat the filling though! 3mo
Butterflyamore @RaimeyGallant Same! I eat the filling out of the pumpkin pie crust. I like it when chocolate cream pie is made in a graham cracker or chocolate pie crust because I don‘t mind those at all. I made a graham cracker pie crust for the s‘mores pie. 3mo
RaimeyGallant I love graham crust, too! We're kindred spirits. :) 3mo

heidisreads I love apple pie and blueberry pie, but I do not like pie with meringue (not sure on spelling). 3mo
Butterflyamore @Scochrane26 Oh, I like strawberry EVERYTHING! Haha 3mo
Butterflyamore @heidisreads I‘m not sure if I‘ve ever had a meringue pie. I always hear about lemon meringue pie but it‘s only occurring to me now that I have never tried it! 3mo
Scochrane26 @heidisreads I don‘t like meringue either, which is hard when you live in the south. Also, I‘ve tried making it & it hasn‘t turned out. I love chocolate pie but will just take meringue or whipped cream off. 3mo
JoyBlue I 💙 raspberry! If only I could find it.... 2mo
Butterflyamore @JoyBlue I‘ve never heard of a raspberry pie! I‘d be interested in trying that! 2mo
JoyBlue Years ago, Baker's Square used to serve them. People keep trying to tell me that triple berry (raspberry/blackberry/blueberry) is really delicious and a suitable substitute, but they are terribly mistaken! 😢😒😭 2mo

OMG! I LOVED this book! I realized that this book is one of my wheelhouses. Magical food and ingredients that bring people happiness and comfort. Romance and families connecting.

I started reading this book last night and couldn‘t put it down. I didn‘t want to leave this world and all the characters in this world.

I wasn‘t going to participate in #24B4Monday but I read for 4:50:19 today!

Trying to relax tonight and do some “self care”. Which right now is watching reruns, starting a new book and drinking a glass of wine.

I probably won‘t get too much reading done this weekend, so I‘m trying to get it in now!

For years, when people would ask me the best magical realism book I ever read, it was “The House at the End of Hope Street“. Now, that answer has to change, because THIS is the best magical realism book I've ever read. I've been a fan of Heather's writing for ages, but she's outdone herself with this. Do yourself a favor and get it and read it. Oh, and pie recipes!
