Westworld meets The Handmaids Tale in this start to a thrilling, subversive near future series from New York Times bestselling author Suzanne Young about a girls-only private high school that is far more than it appears to be. The Girls of Innovations Academy are beautiful and well-behavedit says so on their report cards. Under the watchful gaze of their Guardians, the all-girl boarding school offers an array of studies and activities, from Growing a Beautiful and Prosperous Garden to Art Appreciation and Interior Design. The girls learn to be the best society has to offer. Absent is the difficult math coursework, or the unnecessary sciences or current events. They are obedient young ladies, free from arrogance or defiance. Until Mena starts to realize that their carefully controlled existence may not be quite as it appears. As Mena and her friends begin to uncover the dark secrets of whats actually happening thereand who they really arethe girls of Innovations will find out what they are truly capable of. Because some of the prettiest flowers have the sharpest thorns. Bringing the trademark plot twists, compelling romance, and high-octane drama that made The Program bestselling series, Suzanne Young launches a new series that confronts some of todays most pressing ethical questions.

Day 1 of #24in48 completed! Four books read in a total of 9 hours and 17 minutes. Not too bad considering I‘ve been in a major book slump! On to tomorrow‘s reading!

Book 1 for #24in48 done! @24in48

A mix of Brave New World & A Handmaid‘s Tale in which girls are bred & educated to be obedient & demure. At this all girls school they‘re taught by a male staff to be charming & look pretty above all else. Thinking too much might cause wrinkles after all! But after a chance meeting on a school trip Mena‘s eyes begin to open to what life is like outside the fence & to whats happening to them inside the school.

Very impressed with this dystopian / science fiction YA novel. It's hugely feminist and shines a light on many of the issues surrounding young women, past and present. I'm glad this is the first in a series, I hope the sequels hold up.

Lovesbooks87 I bailed on this but I have seen so many people talk about how good it was maybe I need to give it another chance! 5mo
sophierayton Maybe, but I'm a big believer in not all books are for all people, if this wasn't speaking to you, then that's totally fine.
I did really enjoy it. I think it'll be a big seller and series and probably be turned into a movie franchise. So, if you want to get in there before the hype, act soon, if not, just watch the film that will inevitable be made one day.

This book was amazing. It started off with a very dark tone. It was obvious that something untoward was going on with the girls at the boarding school and as it progressed, we get to see how dark the intentions are. This has a Stepford Wives feel and a little bit of The Handmaid‘s Tale. There are such strong ideas in this about viewing women as property and a call to rise above this ideology. Excellent book - definitely read it if you can!

The points made in the book were valid and important and I appreciated the message. Most people don't realize it is more tiring to fight back even once you know you're being oppressed; it is easier to go on feigning ignorance.

The story itself just seemed sort of skeletal and a bit flat to me. I would have liked to have seen the author make the characters more dynamic and the plot more original and less predictable.

So far, I'm real liking this. I expect it's going to get darker but I am enjoying the characters. I am dying for them to rebel! 😊

Some people didn‘t care for this but for me it was a bit of a guilty pleasure. I was rooting for the girls to figure out what was going on & for the creepy staff to get their comeuppance.

It did take a bit too long for the penny to drop for the MC, Mena, but overall it was a decent read & indictment of rape culture. 4🌟

Thanks to NetGalley & publishers, Simon & Schuster UK / Children‘s, for the opportunity to review an ARC. #NetGalley

Bailedbailed

I hate bailing on books but I couldn't read another page. I read over 200 pages and I hate the way the girls in this book were treated. They were abused and didn't have their own voice. I kept reading because it seems like they were going to start standing up to the men in there lives. But I knew I needed to bail when I didn't want to read today and have only read a couple of pages . Just can't force myself anymore!

jenniferajanes I bailed on a book today too. 268/396 pages and I just couldn‘t go on! Here‘s to our next book! 🥂 Happy reading! 8mo
Lovesbooks87 @jenniferajanes so glad to know that I wasn't the only one! Just wanting on the books that I preordered to come today then I will be able to start a new book! 8mo
jenniferajanes @Lovesbooks87 A preorder? What did you get? 8mo
Lovesbooks87 @jenniferajanes I got three! 😬 You'd be Mine by Erin Hahn The Princess and the Fangirl by Ashley Postson and Mirror, Mirror: a Twisted Tale by Jen Calonita. These are all books that I have been wanting to read for months! I am so exited for them to show up in my mailbox today!!! 😀 8mo

This cover is so fantastic, but the insides were a let down. A YA feminist dystopia, but wasn‘t different enough from everything else on the market to really stand out and veered strongly into cliche. However, it‘s super readable and good for a slump. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ https://bit.ly/2MQGhAO

A YA feminist Stepford Wives! I am really enjoying this one, which is no surprise since I loved Young's Program series. #arc

Really wanted to love, though early comparisons to Handmaid's Tale and Westworld made for an impossible order to fill.
