Dragon Pearl | Yoon Ha Lee
46 posts | 33 read | 67 to read
Rick Riordan Presents Yoon Ha Lee's space opera about thirteen-year-old Min, who comes from a long line of fox spirits. But you'd never know it by looking at her. To keep the family safe, Min's mother insists that none of them use any fox-magic, such as Charm or shape-shifting. They must appear human at all times. Min feels hemmed in by the household rules and resents the endless chores, the cousins who crowd her, and the aunties who judge her. She would like nothing more than to escape Jinju, her neglected, dust-ridden, and impoverished planet. She's counting the days until she can follow her older brother, Jun, into the Space Forces and see more of the Thousand Worlds. When word arrives that Jun is suspected of leaving his post to go in search of the Dragon Pearl, Min knows that something is wrong. Jun would never desert his battle cruiser, even for a mystical object rumored to have tremendous power. She decides to run away to find him and clear his name. Min's quest will have her meeting gamblers, pirates, and vengeful ghosts. It will involve deception, lies, and sabotage. She will be forced to use more fox-magic than ever before, and to rely on all of her cleverness and bravery. The outcome may not be what she had hoped, but it has the potential to exceed her wildest dreams. This sci-fi adventure with the underpinnings of Korean mythology will transport you to a world far beyond your imagination.

I picked this book randomly based on availability and enjoyed it. I hadn‘t expected to find another book about fox spirits this month, this time from #koreanfolklore. @NomiReads tagged me in this one!
1. I don‘t have many “bookish” items aside from bookmarks, but I‘ll count these floating bookshelves!
2. I listen to audiobooks a lot thanks to the library‘s #hoopla and #overdrive! They‘re convenient for chores and commute times. The tagged book is one I‘m listening to now (selected randomly)
3. I never know who to tag. Did mine inspire yours? Tag me so I get to see!

My nieces and I really enjoyed Dragon Pearl. We've been reading it as our book club book for the past while. It blends Korean folklore with science fiction, fantasy and space travel. There is a non binary character and shapeshifters which both challenge traditional gender expectations. We can't wait for the second book to come out! #nonbinaryboks

LibrarianRyan the Rick Riordian imprint has done such a fantastic job of choosing books. I last read Sal and Gabby break the universe and I'm now on Tristan Strong. This is on my TBR but each one has been excellent. 1mo

Loved it. It has action, magic, science, betrayal, courage and ultimately love and faith win it all. Min is complex, fun to follow and learn this world with. I had no knowledge of Korean mythology and just dived into this very vivid world the writer offered us, readers. I could feel the sand, hear the sounds of the boots on the metal floors of the space ships and see the ghosts. #booked2019 #summer

I hope we get more adventures from this world.

BarbaraTheBibliophage Sounds like a fun middle grade choice! 4mo

Okay so I had a friend read this and she didn't end up loving it even though she was so hyped for it. That made me pretty hesitant to pick it up but BOY OH BOY WAS SHE WRONG! I freaking loved this! The characters were solid (I adore Min) and the mystery kept me guessing. I loved getting Korean mythology interwoven (shout out to the damn prime example of an ally: Rick Riordan) into a sci-fi. It really did help make the book and the magic different.

A YA adventure in a universe peopled by creatures out of Korean legends: fox spirits, dragons, tigers, and ghosts. Min is a fox who runs away on a space freighter to find her lost brother and clear his name. She learns that she's a good gi engineer, but can use some practice in trusting the right people.

The mythology and world-building is fabulous! I enjoyed the adventure and immersing myself in her world, but found her inability to build connections with other people disappointing. There was also a lot of back and forth with loyalty that seemed added for “dramatic effect”, though it instead left me exasperated. Those minor concerns aside, this was a wonderful foray into the world of science fiction with a healthy dose of mythology throughout!

⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was quite similar to Percy Jackson books in story & pacing with main character Min getting into one scrape after another. But what made it more enjoyable for me than PJ & the Greek gods was that I‘m not familiar with the Korean mythology system, so I couldn‘t tell where the story was going as soon as a new character was introduced. It is a fun, middle grade read, and I‘m excited for the other books in the Rick Riordan Presents series!

Love this!!! What a great way to use his fame platform - not only celebrating other cultures‘ stories but their authors as well!

LibrarianRyan that's how he got his own imprint. Kids were asking him to write mythology from their cultures and he said he couldn't because he didn't know them well enough. This was his answer. So far he as Cuban, Korean, Indian (I think), Mayan, African American legends and folklore are coming in October, and native american is coming in January. So very excited. My #LMPBC group is going to read the October book since I have a galley. Cant wait! 7mo

I enjoyed this great addition to the Rick Riordan Presents collection! I loved the focus on Asian myths and culture in a futuristic setting. Min is from a family of gumiho or fox spirits and desperately wants to join the Space Forces to get off her barren homeworld, Jinju. When her brother, a Space Forces cadet, is accused of desertion to search for the dragon pearl, she decides to leave Jinju to search for him and bring him home. #OwnVoices

Space opera meets Korean folklore in this fun little adventure featuring Min, a 13-year old girl from a less-developed planet who, due to various unforeseen incidents, ends up on a military spaceship thing and suddenly everything is madness. Especially when there are ghosts. Those are full madness.

(I have no idea what to say about this book because I liked it, but I wasn't mad about it. Idk. It's a good book! Fun! Mythology!)

A blend of MG military space opera and Korean mythology. Seeking to clear her brother's name, Min, a forbidden fox spirit finds herself embroiled in the misadventures of the quest for the Dragon Pearl, an object that can help terraform new worlds. The blend of magic and science was well-balanced making it seamless in the story. While tackling serious themes of family and acceptance it's balanced with heart saving this from being too dark.

A good book. I love reading about fox spirits, and, of course, the goblin, dragon, and tiger spirits as well. The adventure was good and heart-pounding until things got a little messy at the climax. Even then, there was a lot going on - perhaps too much. Min doesn‘t feel like a 13-year-old, at least not any 13-y-o I‘ve ever met - she‘s far too responsible! But I forward to her next outing, after all that she‘s lost and gained in this book.

I would have loved to read a book like this when I was a kid. I was solidly a Trekkie (TNG 5eva) and this space opera scratched all the right itches. Dragon Pearl is a great introduction to Yoon Ha Lee‘s world-building - his Machineries of Empire trilogy builds its galaxy in similar ways. I loved how he didn‘t “softball” the SF elements just because the audience is middle grade. Fast-paced plot, compelling main character. I couldn‘t put it down.

balletbookworm For serious: I got into the hot bath expecting to read a few chapters (starting on p76) while having my tea but got to the last page of the book to find that both the bath and my tea had grown cold! 🙀 12mo
