The Song of Achilles, Madeline Miller‘s thrilling, profoundly moving, and utterly unique retelling of the legend of Achilles and the Trojan War. A tale of gods, kings, immortal fame, and the human heart, The Song of Achilles is a dazzling literary feat that brilliantly reimagines Homer‘s enduring masterwork.

This was beautifully written. Miller did a great job and expanding characters that history already knows about to make them more real. I know the Achilles story so something about the pacing of the book did feel a little stop and go to weave them together but the ending really brought the story to a nice close. Overall I would recommend.

This more personal and tender take on the Trojan war is poetic, while never going over board with its flowery language. Those who enjoy Greek and Roman mythology and legend will appreciate some of the more gentle aspects of the romance and devotion shared between Patroculos and Achilles. Not an extremely difficult read, but an easy and engrossing one.

⭐⭐⭐⭐1/2. I had read somewhere in all of the praise for Circe that reading Song of Achilles was "not necessary." However because it precedes it and is Madeline Miller's first novel I had always planned on it. And I'm so glad I did! It is an incredible book, easy to read and I was obsessed with the relationship between Achilles and Patroclus. Thetis was formidable and daunting. Agamemnon was disgusting and highly unlikable. Chiron patient and wise

I enjoyed Circe so much I decided to dive into Song of Achilles immediately after and boy did I love it. I thought the story was beautifully told and I loved that it was told from the point of view of Patroclus. I'm usually a huge fan of love stories but this one really did it for me. I even teared up a little at the end.

Making choices is REALLY hard for me, so I'm a bit tortured in today's episode, Unabridged Awards. (I'll have a post soon about all of the books I wish I could have included!) Sara, Ashley, and I highlight some of our favorites of the year and (in a segment that makes us squirm) the books that weren't our cup of tea. Check out the episode, and then let us know what awards you'd give!⠀

What books would you highlight from your reading in 2019?

"Some had a whole epic, others just a verse." The Song of Achilles is so much more than the story of Achilles.

Achilles as a man, someone loved and capable of loving. Achilles as the son of a goddess and king, greatest warrior of Greece, without emotions, simply dedicated to the task of being the prophesied honorable warrior. The life and death of both Patroclus and Achilles, stories intertwined since they were young boys.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

EmilyM I l❤️ved this book! 1mo

reserved this book at the library because of the reviews. When I brought it home and realized it was a story based on Greek mythology, I was so disappointed that I almost didn't read it. I'm so glad I did, though! It's incredibly well-written, and the story is extremely good. The only parts I didn't love were the fight scenes.

100%, best book I‘ve read all year. I know I say that about a lot of books, but this book just annihilated every book on my favorites list. This book is the love story Achilles deserved, the the low key, devoted couple I needed, and a magnificent piece of art. I will defend this book and everything is holds, represents and stands for until my dying breath. Thank you for coming to my rant. Excuse me while I go read it again and cry.

Been absent on Litsy for the past week & a half because I‘ve been off at this AMAZING conference on Homer and mythology in Greece, hosted by the amazing Madeline Miller. I am SO blessed to have gotten to know her and have her take interest in my own book (series) that, like “Song of Achilles” & “Circe” is of a genre called “Mythical Realism”. As both a writer & Classicist, I am so honored to know Ms.Miller & have her in my life. She IS a goddess❤️

Ok, Miller is definitely going onto my must read author list from now on! Not only did I love the story, she manages to write compelling stories about greek myths, but makes them unputdownable with almost lyrical story telling. She made me look at this old story in a completely new way, and made me want to reread the Iliad again, plus this book made me ugly cry like I haven‘t over a book for years. What more could you ask for?

This book had me falling in love with Achilles and Patroclus both. It's an easy read, and although I already knew the tragedy I would be facing, I had hope. Until the very last page. And even then, I still got the happy ending I craved. I have always viewed Achilles in a negative light, but this book showed me a kind, gentle, and honorable side to the hero. Patroclus was just a name, a filler character with no depth, until I read this book. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
