The Secret Loves of Geek Girls: Expanded Edition
The Secret Loves of Geek Girls: Expanded Edition | Various, Margaret Atwood
118 posts | 54 read | 1 reading | 122 to read
The Secret Loves of Geek Girls is a non-fiction anthology mixing prose, comics, and illustrated stories on the lives and loves of an amazing cast of female creators. Featuring work by Margaret Atwood (The Heart Goes Last), Mariko Tamaki (This One Summer), Trina Robbins (Wonder Woman), Marguerite Bennett (Marvel's A-Force), Noelle Stevenson (Nimona), Marjorie Liu (Monstress), Carla Speed McNeil (Finder), and over fifty more creators. It's a compilation of tales told from both sides of the tables: from the fans who love video games, comics, and sci-fi to those that work behind the scenes: creators and industry insiders.

A collection of geek women telling their own stories about love with honesty, humour and wit. A lot of them are really sweet and filled with the type of wisdom I don‘t always see in portrayals of romance.

Little cuddle bug finally calmed down from her morning rampage of the house (😟 please send puppy obedience trainer asap). Page wouldn't let me have my hand back to read for a bit. I kinda don't mind because these moments when she is calm and loving are few and far between right now. ❤

I've been dipping in and out of this anthology since November! I've finally finished it, and I loved it! I love the mixture of different formats for the stories and reading about the experiences of so many different women was refreshing - there's a decent amount of LGBT+ representation and something to appeal to every level of geekery. If Dark Horse do another one, I'm definitely picking it up!

Probably one of the most "me" books I've read. All of these non fiction stories made me realize that I'm seriously not alone in my love of fandoms, unattainable crushes (celebrity and non), dating, being a lady nerd and having to only show sections for fear of alienation, and my favorite the fact that I've met so many like minded nerds, ladies and gentlemen, on the internet!

LoveToReadLiveToRead This sounds great! 13mo
GondorGirl This one sounds right up my alley! I'm a girl working in the male dominated side of a very geeky career path. I often feel a little out of place. 13mo
mariaku21 @GondorGirl it's a good combo of different types of geek/ nerd "moments" in life. 13mo
MayginReads I did love that it speaks to both nerd and geek culture as I feel out of my depth in geek culture, but could relate to all the introverted nerds! I very much liked the meshing of the two while also speaking to universal topics. I feel like non-nerd and non-geek women could also relate well to many of these! 13mo
mariaku21 @MayginReads YES! It speaks to all people, culture aside, on such really fantastic and universal themes! 13mo

"It's not enough to accept completely rational explanations for why that reply never arrived." Ok I can relate to that because my boyfriend never replies back immediately while texting. Then it is usually one word compared to 2 or 3 sentences from me. "Ok" is the most annoying reply. I used to drive myself nuts wondering why or even who- but I know he is at work and he doesn't talk much. So I don't let it stress me out anymore ?❤️?

Suet624 He doesn't talk much. Love that. 2y

I was going to post about Lumberjanes for #comicsbywomen, and then I realized I had this--just bought for a friend! It's a nonfiction anthology of comics/illustrated stories featuring work from Noelle Stevenson, Margaret Atwood, Mariko Tamaki, Marjorie Liu & lots more! It includes stories of both fans and creators as it explores the lives and loves of "geek girls." I wish it used a different moniker than "girls," but: alliteration. #anditsaugust

"You should know better than to kiss a writer. They always tell." -Alicia Contestabile
A collection of over 50 brief personal essays, about half in prose, the other half comics, by women talking about love and romance. The variety is astonishing, including late-bloomers, queers, divorcées and demisexuals. Funny, sad, inspiring, raw, bittersweet and triumphant. It was great to read a few stories every day, in between other books.

Augustdana Ok so I saw this and went to the Litsy page and I immediately went out and picked it up. Thanks! Hadn't heard about it before 2y

There's a safety and security in crushing on celebrities or the characters they play because deep down we know we'll never meet them. And therefore they can never disappoint us. But holding people in our real lives up to the same standard gets problematic.

Almost every piece in this anthology was a hit for me. It has a good balance of written and graphic pieces, and covers a good range of topics under the theme of secret loves. Every piece left me wanting more, no matter how long it was, and I can't think of a better recommendation than that! I think my favorite essay was the one about Spock. What was yours?

I loved the stories in this book! 💚 There is a variety in kinds of relationships, types of love, and different places in relationships. A lot of the stories really spoke to my experiences as well and I LOVED all the geeky references and settings.

The only thing that I had a rough time with was the short stories...I've never been a fan cause they are over before I've become invested (the comics are the exception). Even so, loved the book! 😊
