Fangirl: A Novel | Rainbow Rowell
#1 New York Times bestselling author! In Rainbow Rowell's Fangirl, Cath is a Simon Snow fan. Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan, but for Cath, being a fan is her life-and she's really good at it. She and her twin sister, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow series when they were just kids; it's what got them through their mother leaving.Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fan fiction, dressing up like the characters for every movie premiere.Cath's sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can't let go. She doesn't want to.Now that they're going to college, Wren has told Cath she doesn't want to be roommates. Cath is on her own, completely outside of her comfort zone. She's got a surly roommate with a charming, always-around boyfriend, a fiction-writing professor who thinks fan fiction is the end of the civilized world, a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words . . . And she can't stop worrying about her dad, who's loving and fragile and has never really been alone. For Cath, the question is: Can she do this? Can she make it without Wren holding her hand? Is she ready to start living her own life? And does she even want to move on if it means leaving Simon Snow behind?A New York Times Book Review Notable Children's Book of 2013 A New York Times Best Seller!

Mediocre. The power was out so I read them but they didn't thrill me. Teen me would have loved Fangirl at the time but it doesn‘t hit the same at 31. Second Black Widow had less set up and drag time than the first and was much better for not having two teens drooling proclaiming themselves soul mates 2 seconds after they meet but also ghost boyfriend loses points. Especially when it ends ghost brother too.

Fangirl is my favorite RR book, and this picks up when curmudgeonly Reagan is 38 and dealing with the pandemic. A heartwarming romantic short story featuring Jell-O salad. Rainbow + Rebecca Lowman = Christmas perfection!

Plus I was glad to find out what happened to Levi and Cather! 🥰🎄

Free with Amazon Prime. Inexpensive if you want to buy. 💚

Time for presents! 🎁

Crinoline_Laphroaig The only thing that would have made it better was if included the Jello Salad Recipes. 1mo

Not quite what I was expecting from a RR short story.

It‘s interesting to read stories set in COVID times - Reagan, has spent the pandemic being as careful as possible, but has decided to spend Christmas with her recently widowed Grandfather. It‘s about social isolation and how it affects you. It‘s set over two Christmases - and features some sort of jello dessert that you probably have to be American to understand.

thegirlwiththelibrarybag Reagan first appears in Fangirl - and Levi is mentioned as her high school / college boyfriend that she is still in contact with. This short story doesn‘t currently have its own listing - so since it has a small link to Fangirl - here it is! 2mo

I really enjoyed the main story of Cath and the events surrounding her. For me, there was far too much Simon Snow, though. I skimmed over almost all of the Simon Snow writings in the book. This is what brought my rating down by a quarter star. I did come to quite like Reagan. I loved Luke! There were some serious topics in the book, but it‘s still a lighthearted book with humourous bits thrown in.

This was fantastic! Cath is so sweet, but not always soft, and—at least for me—her semi-recluse first semester of college is super easy to relate to. I also felt grateful that Rowell chose not to go a pathway of tearful family reunions, but still found ways to create emotion and interest for the entire book. In short: READ THIS ONE!

There is just something about Rainbow Rowell‘s writing that draws me in. Her characters have a Dawson‘s Creek quality to them that I just love. In this book, Cath is a huge Simon Snow fan (Harry Potter) and writes fan fiction that has generated many followers. Now she is JUST trying to navigate college despite suffering from pretty severe anxiety. Add to that, an absent mother, a twin who wants space, and a bipolar father. Oh, and Levi!!!!

This was a cute read, and I loved having it as an audiobook because it was super easy to remember the characters and where I was at.

We follow Cath on her journey into young adulthood where she is living away from home for the first time, in a dorm room, being challenged to write more than fanfiction and also perhaps finding a love interest...?

I would 100% recommend this to college students because Im sure they could relate on numerous levels.

kezzlou85 I loved this book. Its such a great read and relatable in many ways. 7mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I loved this one, such a light and fun read, but also serious in some parts… I loved her relationship with her mother & father in this one too. 7mo

This book took me straight back to being a nervous 17 year old sitting in my Louisiana Hall dorm room and not knowing how to even start understanding college & the whole summer of 2008. Vivid memories of waiting for the last Twilight book, scouring the internet on my brand new white MacBook, and the pure excitement of knowing my life was about to reach levels that my small town would never have given me. ✨ #fangirl #yareading

Fangirl - I love Rowell‘s writing. She just has a way with words. Admittedly this is only second book of hers I‘ve read. I don‘t normally read YA, but I did enjoy this book (except for the interrupting Simon sections). Cath grew as a person through the book which is what I look forward to in characters. Levi was such an amazing and even character. Wren while a secondary character also was improving at the end.

jb72 DNF for Self Esteem - my brain is just not in the mood for it at the moment. 8mo

This was cute, light-hearted read. I really related to Cath and her social anxiety quirks. This was a good depiction of a freshman year in college, trying to figure out your way in a whole new world. I liked the slow burn romance aspect and the family dynamics. Plus it was fun to have little snippets of Simon and Baz since I've already read their later story.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I really liked this one too, and I loved both the Baz & Simon books, I can‘t wait for the next one. 8mo

OMG I listen to this every year and every year I fall more and more in love with Levy.
There's a lot to love about this guy but more than anything it's the way he interacts with Cath - from the beginning he's always just courteous and sweet but as he gets to know her, like really know her, he's there for her from a shoulder to lean on to being the most dependable one in her life in a moment's notice.

I love the switch from the plot to the Simon Snow books or the fanfiction pieces, it was a cool angle to have. There is one thing that just bugged me the whole time and that was the rape and incest comments in the novel. They were unnecessary and uncomfortable to read but they stop after page 200. Overall is easy and cute to read, the back and forth between the story is great and it's a great book to get out of a reading slump.

Not really for me. Fan fiction not my thing, so distracted from the rest. Realised YA romance not my thing, I liked the twin interaction and their dad and Reagan.
Question, author uses word ‘spaz‘ as in don‘t be one. This is really derogatory in U.K. and did make me jolt, is it ok in US? Curious.
#authoramonth

eraderneely Very benign in the US. I had no idea it was problematic here...there are so many of these US/UK words that one of them is really going to catch me out one day. 14mo
TrishB @eraderneely probably best not to shout it out over Asda! Here it‘s basically insulting someone by calling them disabled. 14mo
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Yikes, I‘ve always understood it as just meaning someone is being hyper/overly energetic/excited about something. 🤷‍♀️ I‘m with @eraderneely I‘m totally going to fumble at the wrong moment one of these days... 😟😅 14mo
See All 17 Comments
eraderneely It wasn‘t an active part of my vocabulary before, but thanks for the warning 14mo
TrishB @eraderneely @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I‘m sure there are many the other way round too. I was in China a few years ago and one of the senior staff we were travelling with had a surname that translated into a really bad slur in Chinese, so they could only call him by his first name. Which then made them feel impolite! It was a bit of a nightmare. 14mo
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @TrishB Lol, aww too funny. Gotta love language mishaps. 😅 14mo
Andrew65 Spaz definitely unacceptable (and beyond) in U.K. terms. A number of words that are not acceptable in some countries. 14mo
Reggie How funny. Cause spaz to me just meant you‘re calling someone awkward. 14mo
TrishB @Reggie definitely not that in U.K. Funny how words diverge. 14mo
rwmg @Reggie It's derived from spastic, which used to be the medical term for certain types of cerebral palsy. It was then generalised as a slur to suggest somebody was of low intelligence if they were not good at physical activities such as sports. 14mo
Reggie @rwmg yeah, I always think of someone tripping over themselves when I think of that word. I had no idea. Thanks for the clarification. 😊 14mo
CarolynM A much used word in my 1970s primary school playground but definitely unacceptable in this country now. 14mo
Octoberwoman Interesting seeing the comments about the word. My 17 year old cat is named Spazz, she got the name as a youngster who zoomed around the house, jumping at every little thing and acting like she was feral even though she was born in my dresser drawer and had never been outside. I had no idea where the word had originated from. 14mo
TrishB @Octoberwoman would definitely get a hard stare if you shouted that name here! Funny different turns of words. 14mo
TrishB @CarolynM same here 👍🏻 14mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘m with @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm it was common when I was a kid to describe hyper, overly energetic and sort of geeky kids. Now they‘d probably just be hyper or fan fanatics for whichever fandom....but in the 80‘s they were spaz‘s who spazed out over whatever their thing was...Star Trek, Star Wars, Ninja Turtles...so super excited and could tell you all the fine minutiae that you didn‘t even know there was. And yes, word usage varies a lot, 14mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ...in English. Being an American in the UK in college, I definitely put my foot in my mouth a few times. (edited) 14mo
