Time After Time
Time After Time: A Novel | Lisa Grunwald
"On a clear December morning in 1937, at the famous gold clock in Grand Central Terminal, Joe Reynolds, a hardworking railroad man from Queens, meets a vibrant young woman who seems mysteriously out of place. Nora Lansing is a Manhattan socialite whose flapper clothing, pearl earrings, and talk of the Roaring Twenties don't seem to match the bleak mood of Depression-era New York. Captivated by Nora from her first electric touch, Joe despairs when he tries to walk her home and she disappears. Finding her again--and again--will become the focus of his love and his life. Nora, an aspiring artist and fiercely independent, is shocked to find she's somehow been trapped, her presence in the terminal governed by rules she cannot fathom. It isn't until she meets Joe that she begins to understand the effect that time is having on her, and the possible connections to the workings of Grand Central and the astrological phenomenon known as Manhattanhenge. As thousands of visitors pass under the famous celestial blue ceiling each day, Joe and Nora create a life unlike any they could have imagined. With infinite love in a finite space, they take full advantage of the "Terminal City" within a city, dining at the Oyster Bar, visiting the Whispering Gallery, and making a home at the Biltmore Hotel. But when the construction of another historic landmark threatens their future, Nora and Joe are forced to test the limits of freedom and love. Delving into Grand Central's rich past, Lisa Grunwald crafts a masterful historical novel about a love affair that defies age, class, place, and even time"--

Nora dies in an accident in 1925. After that she magically flickers back to life in NYC and is seen by Joe, a station worker. I adored the descriptions of Grand Central station. It was absolutely a main character within the novel. The plot had some strengths and weakness and lags in the middle, but the historical detail is excellent. There‘s a whole world within the station and the author brought it to life beautifully.

Admittedly, I‘m not generally a fan of historical fiction—rarely, I find one particularly well done; mostly I‘d rather read the actual history & save myself the forced & feeble fictional story line. The premise of this one was intriguing to me, so I tried valiantly to like it. From the outset, the story was very familiar—it‘s been done (better) in other books. As I plodded on, I found Joe and Nora less and less appealing. [bailed at 53% / 6:35:56]

Finally finished! I enjoyed the descriptions of- and secrets about- Grand Central Station more than I did the story of Nora and Joe. Their situation was very intriguing but I never really warmed up to either of them. I kept reading as I was interested in knowing how they managed the situation they were in. I liked the decision they made at the end but I'd have liked a lot more detail than we got in the last chapter.

When I first starting hearing about Time After Time, I have to say I was a little hesitant about reading this especially when compared to The Time Traveler's Wife because I loved that book so much. However, after receiving and ARC and then finding it on Modern Mrs. Darcy's Summer Reading Guide I said I am going to give this a shot.

A great read! I wanted to chuck this book at the wall at one point (if you read it, you‘ll know the part) BUT it redeemed itself for me and I enjoyed the twists and turns. I get the ending, I don‘t love the ending, but I get it 👍🏻⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Not my favorite so far from the #mmdsummerreadingguide. It really reminded me of The Time Travelers Wife which was a miss for me as well. Enjoyable, but it won‘t be making my favorites list.

LiteraryinLititz What a beautiful cover though! 3w
Ashley_Nicoletto @LiteraryinLititz It is gorgeous! And I‘ve seen a lot of rave reviews. I struggle with time travel always in all forms. But otherwise it‘s a gorgeous book. 3w

A very interesting story about a young lady named Nora and a young man named Joe. The history of Grand Central Station was pretty neat.

I love this book but it is so hard to classify what kind of book it is. It‘s definitely a love story. I have seen it listed as “time travel“ but I don‘t think that description fits since it is more about someone stuck in time. I‘ve also seen it described as “science fiction“ which totally boggles my mind because I don‘t think there is any way it can be called that. But, whatever you want to call it, it‘s a great story with a great ending.

Lisa Grunwald's Time After Time is a lovely, gentle romance. (Thanks to Sara for the loan!) It's not the people in the novel who create conflict--each is empathetic to the extreme--it's the circumstances. Joe Reynolds works in Grand Central Station, a solid, faithful employee, brother, and son. On December 5, 1937, he glimpses Nora Lansing and feels an instant connection when they meet. And then she disappears. (continued in comments)

UnabridgedPod What ensues is a love story divided by time, death, and war. Grunwald has crafted here a historical novel that deals with the importance of love in the face of the rest of one's life. I found these characters to be so believable, so real, and their decisions were just heartbreaking. ⬇️ 1mo
UnabridgedPod This is a perfect summer read and brought to mind Fiona Davis's The Masterpiece (because of its connection to Grand Central Station) and Audrey Niffenegger's The Time Traveler's Wife (because of the role of time in the central love story).⠀ 1mo

It is a love story conquering time and obstacles. Set in 1940‘s Grand Central Station. A great light read for summer vacation. The plot is slow but not boring. I don't like the male lead character, but the female lead is pretty great.

I haven't read in SIX DAYS! It's the first time I haven't had time to finish a library book I was enjoying. I'm back on the hold list, so I will be able to finish it eventually, but I'm still bummed.
And the #EoE #buddyread! 😫 Didn't even get through last week's reading & now we're halfway through this week. I'm hopeful that I'll have a chunk of time tomorrow to at least not fall further behind. I doubt catching up is possible at this point. 😭

UwannaPublishme You‘ll be able to breeze through these sections. I found it hard to stop once I started. Good luck! 2mo

I was SO excited for this book. Historical fiction, romance, & fantasy - it sounded right up my alley. I was disappointed. The premise of the novel is extremely clever, but I didn‘t like the execution of it. The characters felt flat to me. There were stretches of the book where I felt quite bored.
With that being said, I liked the ending.
It wasn‘t a bad book. It wasn‘t a great book. I‘m very apathetic about it. I give it a solid 2.5/5 stars.

Great (so far) book that takes place in the 1920/30s at Grand Central Station and gives a great history. Has a nice time traveling component and they in the vein of reading about places I know (see my previous post lol) the main character is frequently in Queens including the town my husband grew up in!

The lack of time I've had for reading these past months (nearly a year! 😯) is starting to make me crazy. I HAVE to finish this by tomorrow as it's a library book and I'm afraid I'm not going to have time. Plus, I'm waaaay behind on the #EoE #buddyread and I really want to try to catch up. 😫 (I totally need to buy a lottery ticket. No job=lots of time to read, I imagine! 🤔)

Pick!
Really enjoyed this unconventional historical love story.
1938 - Nora can‘t leave Grand Central Terminal. Joe, a train leverman, falls in love with her. How can they make a life together?
Nora‘s unusual circumstances and the Depression era / WWII setting made for a very enjoyable story.
Also learned a lot of history about Grand Central Station.

I simply loved this book. It started off slowly, but as it unfurled and gained momentum, I fell deeper and deeper into its many chasms...an epic supernatural time-travel tale, a complicated and heart wrenching love story, an absorbingly interesting historical spanning from the mid 1920s-1947 and a true celestial/geographical phenomenon that seems more like science fiction...this book covers a lot of territory. And it all takes place in 🔽

robinb the iconic Grand Central Terminal. This one will stay with me. 5+/5⭐️ Big thanks to #NetGalley and @penguinrandomhouse for the ARC. The opinions are strictly my own. (edited) 3mo

robinb @BookNAround I got it through NetGalley on my Kindle, and TBH did not read too much about it going in. It started slow, but as I got deeper into the story, it really blew me away...all the feels. I hope you get your copy soon! Would love to hear what you think! (edited) 3mo
