Rilla of Ingleside
Rilla of Ingleside: A Virago Modern Classic | L. M. Montgomery
The eighth book in the Anne Shirley series. Anne Shirley's children are almost all grown up - except for pretty, high-spirited Rilla, who is now almost fifteen years old. No one can resist Rilla's bright hazel eyes and dazzling smile, and Rilla herself can think no further ahead than going to her very first dance at the Four Winds lighthouse - and getting her first kiss from handsome Kenneth Ford! But at the dance, news is brought that England has declared war on Germany. At first, this means little to Rilla, on the threshold of so many new excitements. But as her brothers go off to fight in the Great War and Rilla brings home an orphaned newborn baby in a soup tureen, she is swept into a drama that tests her courage and will leave her changed for ever... A collection will be coveted by children and adults alike, this list is the best in children's literature, curated by Virago. These are timeless tales with beautiful covers, that will be treasured and shared across the generations. Some titles you will already know; some will be new to you, but there are stories for everyone to love, whatever your age. Our list includes Nina Bawden (Carrie's War, The Peppermint Pig), Rumer Godden (The Dark Horse, An Episode of Sparrows), Joan Aiken (The Serial Garden, The Gift Giving) E. Nesbit (The Psammead Trilogy, The Bastable Trilogy, The Railway Children), Frances Hodgson Burnett (The Little Princess,The Secret Garden) and Susan Coolidge (The What Katy Did Trilogy). Discover Virago Children's Classics.

Book eight in the Anne of Green Gables series and the last few books I haven't enjoyed so much but this one turned it around for me.
My full review can be found here:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2623815104?book_show_action=false&from_rev...

bookishkris My favorite after Anne of the Island. 10mo
DarcysMom I am reading this right now for the #192019challenge. I am really enjoying it. 10mo
Michellesibs @bookishkris I'd agree that this is my second favourite too, although Green Gables was my absolute favourite 10mo
Michellesibs @DarcysMom that's a real coincidence as this isn't such a popular book, happy reading! 10mo

This was an unforgettable book that introduced me to WW1. I love this series of books, and loved how connected I felt to all of Anne‘s Family.
Anyone else have books about World War One to recommend in honor of Veterans Day?

Today‘s focus is sorting which culled books are being traded for credit and which will be donated. I have two LibraryThing catalogs, one where I‘ve added all of the books I‘ve removed from my library over three purges, and the main one that I will hopefully have cleaned up and up to date by the time I‘m fully unpacked and stuff is on shelves. #CueCat is on the job!

This book was a satisfying end to the series, but Rilla is just not as engaging for me as Anne was at that age. I did enjoy seeing her mature, and I love Walter, and Dog Monday made me sob. I will miss Anne after my return to rereading the books after so many years, but this concluding volume did offer me some closure.

GypsyKat I love this series. ❤️ 2y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️: Rilla-my-Rilla!! Can it be? My very favorite of the Anne books so far! This one had s but of everything I want in a book. Enter WW1 and the time takes a somber turn in the series. Couldn‘t get enough of this one, and Dog Monday stole all my tears. (Well, almost!)

A lovely end to this delightful collection. I liked it better than book 7 and the feelings around WW1 are still important and relevant now. #readwomen

Posting my day 7 of #17booklove - #lovetoreread - a little early. My rereading falls into 2 main categories: Georgette Heyer, and YA. 🙂 I have reread the Anne books and my favorite Heyers at least a half-dozen times. All of HP and the Raven Cycle 2x (some of the early ones 3x). And Fangirl is my #audiobook comfort. I've listened to the whole book 4x! 🙈

So, I picked up my favourite #anneofgreengables book at a secondhand book market yesterday (my own copy was loaned years ago, never to return 😱), and I realised that despite the many adaptations of the first few books in the Anne series, Rilla has NEVER. This is one of my favorites from this series. Having Rilla as the main character was almost like a return to the first few books in the series when Anne young. The World War 1 setting makes it fresh, it is a treat to see all of Anne and Gilbert's children grown up, and I really love Kenneth Ford.
