“Time spent reading, like time spent loving, increases our lifetime.” D. Pennac

My girlfriend hates me because the first thing I did for the move in our new house was put the books in boxes!!!
And I still don't have any bookshelves to put them on 😬😬

You can't make people read. Any more than you can make them love, or dream.

The rights of the reader, by Daniel Pennac and Quentin Blake.
1- The right not to read.
2- The right to skip.
3- The right not to finish a book.
4- The right to read it again.
5- The right to read anything.
6- The right to mistake a book for real life.
7- The right to read anywhere.
8- The right to dip in.
9- The right to read out loud.
10- The right to be quiet
... And 1 warning: don't make fun of people who never read, or they never will.

Our Airbnb had bookshelves so we decided to clear them and have a communal bookshelf share for all the ladies at our #24in48 retreat. We had show and tell for all the books we each brought 😄😍 too. This day has been crazy, but so ready for the readathon.

I have this book on my shelf, within reach, to remind myself of the sensible advices. It‘s fun and I love Quentin Blake‘s illustrations.

It's not even Halloween and I'm thinking about next year's reading goals for myself. Well, more like reading habits I want to cultivate.

The first thing I want to do is to stop obsessing over my audible stats. I find myself thinking about that instead of listening. Or I have an audiobook going when I'm not concentrating on it. And audible loses my stats half the time anyway.

Cathythoughts Excellent 😀I admire your enthusiasm 👍 6y
Billypar "have an audible book going when I'm not concentrating" - this causes me so much guilt sometimes. When it's a really good one, I almost want to apologize to the author for multitasking ? 6y
Sace @Cathythoughts thanks! Let's see if I keep it up! 6y

Sace @Billypar exactly. It's more like I'm doing it for the minutes/listening levels/badges. I'm missing out on good listening. I'm just hearing, not listening. 6y
Cortg Ha, I was thinking about my reading goals for 2018 this morning! I need to tackle the unread books on my bookshelf and my ginormous TBR list. More books I‘ve been dying to read and try to stop getting sidetracked with new books getting a lot of hype. Cheers to reading goals! 6y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled For me, Ive learned that I can‘t listen to an audiobook anywhere but in the car. If I try to do anything else my mind will wander. Maybe driving is just that perfect task for listening. 🤷‍♀️ 6y
Reviewsbylola I find that sometimes I focus too much on number of books read.m, so although I‘m not familiar with Audible, your goal makes sense! 6y
Bklover @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I have the same problem- the only time I don‘t drift off and lose the thread is in the car! 6y
aschermetz @Billypar @RestlessFickleBookSlut I am the same way! I often listen at work and unless it‘s a totally mindless task, I have trouble concentrating and usually have to stop. 6y
Sace @Cortg ". ..stop getting sidetracked by new books..." So much this (and just plain sidetracked.) 6y
Sace @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I do ok in the car. My mind will wander sometimes. Knitting seems to be a good audiobook task for me. 6y
Sace @Reviewsbylola Audible keeps track (sometimes) of time listened and there are levels and badges you can earn. I find myself thinking about the badges way too much. 😂 6y
Sace @aschermetz my mind wanders so much no matter what. 😕 6y
Lmstraubie I was doing the same thing today; thinking of goals for next year. One being starting January I will not buy anymore books until I read the ones I have. 🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😂 6y
Sace @Lmstraubie I make the same goal every MONTH and I fail every time. @inwhichHeikereadsharder had a great idea though. She's going to read 20 books before she buys. I'm thinking of doing something similar. 6y
heikemarie @RestlessFickleBookSlut im going strong at 4 right now - only 80% to go haha! 6y
Lmstraubie That might be more realistic! 😁 6y

I was reminded of this by @Shadowfat

Imagine if all teachers adhered to these basic reading rights.

Yeah_I_Read I was just feeling guilty for re-reading some of the Throne of Glass books and this made me feel better 😊😊 7y
DebbieGrillo @Yeah_I_Read I'm glad this gave you permission to feel good abput it. As an English teacher I've always thought I was odd that I've NEVER reread a book. 7y
Yeah_I_Read I don‘t reread very often but I‘m so addicted to this series. 7y
DGRachel Especially when I was younger, I rarely ever reread a book. Now, though, I have some books that I love so much, it's like greeting an old friend when I open the pages. Many I have reread multiple times. I may lose the element of surprise, but there's comfort from those books. 7y
[DELETED] 3803335244 I adhere to these rules for my students! But I'm a homeschool teacher & my students are my kiddos, so probably doesn't count, lol 😂 When I was in high school I didn't like certain books because I was forced to read it. I've since re-read a few of those books voluntarily & I actually like them. Funny how freedom & choice make you feel differently. 7y
TNbookworm ❤📚👏👏 7y
DebbieGrillo @ForeverNerdy it totally counts! 7y
DebbieGrillo @Dominika You have the right to bail on a book. 7y
Meglet The fact that we need to be reminded of this...why is there so much reader guilt associated with these things? 7y
DebbieGrillo @Meglet I think teachers (I am one) have in the past put too many parameters on reading and have had narrow ideas about what counted as valuable reading. That is changing, must change. Teachers are the target audience for this book. 7y
Meglet So then we as students who have come through that teaching have learned that guilt...what I think is so great is that when you remove those parameters and encourage this bill of rights, we suddenly find we‘re able to enjoy a lot of what we were forced to read (and not be ashamed about disliking the rest). 7y
DebbieGrillo @Meglet You're right about both. 7y

#day6 of #riotgram #riotgrams is #numbers. Technically it should be numbers in the title, but I thought this was better: Daniel Pennac's Ten Rights of the Reader. To which I ascribe completely. The only thing Pennac and I agree on, turns out. @bookriot
