The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle
The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle | Stuart Turton
A brilliantly original high concept murder mystery from a fantastic new talent: Gosford Park meets Inception, by way of Agatha Christie 'Somebody's going to be murdered at the ball tonight. It won't appear to be a murder and so the murderer won't be caught. Rectify that injustice and I'll show you the way out.' It is meant to be a celebration but it ends in tragedy. As fireworks explode overhead, Evelyn Hardcastle, the young and beautiful daughter of the house, is killed. But Evelyn will not die just once. Until Aiden one of the guests summoned to Blackheath for the party can solve her murder, the day will repeat itself, over and over again. Every time ending with the fateful pistol shot. The only way to break this cycle is to identify the killer. But each time the day begins again, Aiden wakes in the body of a different guest. And someone is determined to prevent him ever escaping Blackheath...

Wow, this was a stunning debut. The writing was impeccably executed & kept the reader engaged. A murder mystery novel, that is atmospherically enthralling. The reader follows along the MC who is tasked with solving a murder that happens at the end of the night. This character will experience the day 8 times all from the perspective/body of a new host. If you are in the mood for a thrilling murder mystery, check this book out! Perfect fall read.

TheBookKeepers @kellyann28 thankful to have a bookish bestie to read from afar with! Love u! I‘ll mail this back to you tomorrow with all our notes 😍🖤🍁 1w

TheBookKeepers Yes!!! @kellyann28 & I agree it had a Clue vibe all about it!!! I‘m curious if he‘ll ever write a companion novel! I need more about this society and what happens with Aiden or other loops! Love it all!!!! Lol!! 1w
kellyann28 I KNOW. That very last part of the book really threw me for a loop and I am very curious about that whole set up. Who runs that joint, what's the background scene happening there? Whatever became of Aiden and how does he feel now after the fact? 🤔 Need. More. Info. 1w
TheBookKeepers YES!! And what consequences does the Plague Doctor face? His character background really intrigued me! And Silver Tear was killed within the loop?! Ahhh @kellyann28 1w

Peculiarly good read, unique in some ways but also predictable (in a good way). Agatha Christie, Clue, Back to the Future, Quantum Leap, Memento among a few things it reminded me of.

♟ The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle was fantastic. I couldn‘t put it down, I put off housework to keep reading (and I‘m paying for that today 🙈)

This book was the perfect mix of being able to guess twists and never seeing them coming. It kept me guessing and also satisfied with my ability to figure things out, exactly what I want in a mystery novel. ⁣

I have recommended this book to every I see since finishing it!

This was a murder mystery unlike any I‘ve read before. The main character inhabits the bodies of eight hosts in order to attempt to solve the murder of Evelyn Hardcastle. Helpfully there was a list of characters at the front to keep everyone straight although you still really had to pay attention to all of the twists and turns in the story.

So so confusing at the beginning, middle and then I loved the end. I think a major part of my problem is I tried to read this at the beach during family vacation with lots going on. It's not something that I was able to easily jump back into after a break. Would have been better for me if I had several uninterrupted hours to devote to Evelyn. But overall, it was so inventive and for that it's a total pick. #audiobook #familybookclub

Bailedbailed

I really tried to like this but 50 pages in and I couldn‘t do it. I don‘t know if its because I‘m not in the right mood for this kind of book (even though I JUST finished a murder mystery before picking this book up) or because of the writing or plot. But either way, it hurts my heart to DNF this one but I fear I may push myself into another reading slump if I try to force myself to continue.... 🙈

MelissaSue81 I honestly couldn‘t understand this book. I slogged through it but I still don‘t think I know what happened. 2mo

TrishB I bailed too! 2mo
Sapphire I listened on audio and really wanted to bail the entire middle third. It didn't start to redeem it self till the very end. Overall I am glad I finished because the twist was interesting, but it was a bit of a tortured telling. Which kind of fits I guess if the author wanted the readers to have a taste of what the characters go through. 2mo

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Whereas I took my time reading my last few books, I finished this big one in 2 days. I can't believe how hooked I was on the plot, the characters and how everything ended fitting together! It was absolutely amazing and I've already recommended all my friends read this. It was a very compelling read that always kept me wanting to continue, one more chapter every time. I'm especially amazed at how the MCs are written.

I love Poirot and Agatha Christie style crime drama. I also love confused timelines and plots that zig zag through time. This should have been the perfect book for me. I was slowly drawn in to the world and rubbing my hands with glee, making mental notes of all the characters and using the map at the front to figure out where everyone was. My trouble was the book came to an end, then seemed to bump along the bottom for a while, adding too much.

I finished listening to this one on a long drive today. I was grateful that I had severs linger trips to listen as it helped keep track of the various characters, clues being revealed, and threads being unraveled. I enjoyed the setting immensely. While a bit long, I enjoyed the mystery and the (mostly) happy ending.

What a wacky murder mystery! The narrator spends a weekend at a fancy castle with a bunch of characters. He must find out who murdered one of the guests and gets to collect clues until he dies and then starts again in another body. He only has so many “jumps” to unravel the clues. I thought it was clever, a bit long, but a cool idea.

I really think if I'd had more uninterrupted reading time for this one, I would have liked it so much more. It's complex and picking it up and putting it down so much made it tough for me. I‘m going to say pick, but I‘m reminded of the British critic who said that somewhere in Season 2 “Sherlock” “crawled up its own ass” (fell in love with how clever it was). This novel is soooo terribly clever that it‘s exhausting. Comparisons to Christie and Pratchett ring false because they could pull this kind of plot off with 1/2 the pages & 1/3 the characters. Not enough of me is left to appreciate the ending. #mystery #countryhouse

Aimeesue I had to so-so this one. It was so obviously written to be made into a movie that I just couldn‘t like it. 3mo

Wow. I spent a good portion of this book utterly confused - but in a good way! If you love a good mystery novel and can handle some fantastical elements (like waking up each morning as a different person) then this might be for you. Imagine Kate Atkinson‘s Life after Life crossed with Agatha Christie‘s And Then There Were None.
Not sure if it‘s the perfect mystery plot but it was one heck of a roller coaster ride - unlike anything else! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Super unique take on a traditional murder mystery. The characters all felt real and the writing was engrossing and detailed. There were a few twists I predicted and some I didn‘t see at all. Would have liked more to the ending, but otherwise, a great, thrilling read that completely engrossed me.

It's like this book was written for me. An old english country house after WW1 with dubious guests, mixed together with my favourite science fiction trope, the time loop. I'm not 100% sold on the 'why', but that didn't matter much for me, it's still a 4.5 stars read. I wish this book would start a new genre.

I really loved the murder mystery, and how the author told the story. I felt like I was just as lost as Aiden at every step (I felt like it was the authors intent, so I didn‘t have a problem with that). I did have a problem with when the identity of Anna and Aiden is revealed - without any real detail of memory from Aiden about his sister, etc, it didn‘t have very much impact. It should have been a more pivotal moment... 👇🏻

Robothugs It also didn‘t come together at the end in a way that left me feeling satisfied. It fell into the same “rushed ending” feeling a lot of other books do. In the end, the quality of the writing didn‘t redeem this enough for it to be a pick for me. (edited) 4mo
