The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle
The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle | Stuart Turton
A brilliantly original high concept murder mystery from a fantastic new talent: Gosford Park meets Inception, by way of Agatha Christie 'Somebody's going to be murdered at the ball tonight. It won't appear to be a murder and so the murderer won't be caught. Rectify that injustice and I'll show you the way out.' It is meant to be a celebration but it ends in tragedy. As fireworks explode overhead, Evelyn Hardcastle, the young and beautiful daughter of the house, is killed. But Evelyn will not die just once. Until Aiden – one of the guests summoned to Blackheath for the party – can solve her murder, the day will repeat itself, over and over again. Every time ending with the fateful pistol shot. The only way to break this cycle is to identify the killer. But each time the day begins again, Aiden wakes in the body of a different guest. And someone is determined to prevent him ever escaping Blackheath...

I loved 80% of this book! Such a stunning job at weaving a plot—I‘m impressed with this author. The end is, well, not necessary. Takes away from the overall book in my opinion. Still, I think this is a book I won‘t forget because of its originality.

I can see why people enjoy this book. Twisty, turny plot, inventive, unique. But not the book for me, almost a pan. Too many charcters to keep straight, the non stop plot twists was dizzying. I am not a fan of mysteries in general, and this book was just too much for me.

Unlike anything I've ever read before. Took me longer than usual to read the book as there were so many details and characters. Almost reminded me of a "choose your own adventure" without the flipping pages part. Definitely recommend if you get the chance to read it.

A terribly clever novel in which the protagonist lives the same day/events over and over in different bodies trying to learn who kills Evelyn. I didn‘t love the twist at the end but otherwise quite enjoyed the book. I will say that while the reader of the audiobook did excellent male voices and accents, his female voices need work.

A country house murder mystery with bonus time travel elements? This was excellent. The only hard bit is ‘day one‘ where the protagonist has lost his memory. That bit dragged but once we started shifting around it got so enjoyable, with some great imagery.

WanderingBookaneer I loved everything except the ending. 6d

This has been much lauded. I can see why people love it. I just didn‘t enjoy it on the same way I don‘t enjoy magic and sleight of hand. The premise is novel and the narrator the most unreliable of all narrators. Don‘t read it for whodunnit - it isn‘t the point. Unfortunately the point came too late for me. 3 stars

Imagine a book co-written by Agatha Christie & Haruki Murakami. This is that book. Wholly original. Never really had a clue what was going on but loved it! Plus I liked this bit of writing advice at the end.

I enjoyed the writing in this book and wanted to persevere as it‘s a debut novel. Where it let itself down for me was the length, it‘s over 500 pages and the sheer number of characters. At tines the book leaves you feeling confused as to who‘s who.

I have less than 100 pages to go. I get why you bailed @TrishB it‘s a bit too long and slightly preposterous but I‘m still sort of in awe. I think Stuart Turton has written a very clever mystery wrapped in a game, wrapped in another puzzle. I‘m trying to avoid spoilers but nothing is what it seems. And I‘m cool with that 😍

TrishB You‘re much more patient than me! I hope it has a satisfactory ending ❤️ 2w

MaceyT15 @dfieb I looked into this recently as I was confused since I'd only seen "7" as well. Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone was also changed to Sorcerer's Stone in US. Makes it very confusing!! 3w

Why does one say 7 and one 7 1/2? Oh well, this book confused me because of the timeline aspect. It reminds me A LOT of an episode of Black Mirror, and not in relation to time travel. In the end I was actually kind of disappointed how the murder mystery actually panned out. So run of the mill.

As a lover of puzzles and someone who considers themselves pretty adept at solving them, I hate to admit that I lost my way often during this story. Aiden inhabits 8 different bodies over as many days and has to figure out who killed Evelyn during that time. If he fails, he will have to start all over again. The plot is unique and the writing‘s great, but I spent most of the time confused. I‘m guessing that can be attributed to slow reader brain!

I don‘t even know how to describe “The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle” without getting into spoilers, but I was amazed by this book. It has some of the feelings of a classic murder mystery, but answer to the mystery is definitely not what I would have guessed. The story takes some strange and unexpected turns. Highly recommend!

You don't know what to read this Easter? This one is a good choice if you like a good murder mystery.
The story is complicated, and I wish this was a movie ore a video game so I could have faces to remember on all the characters. The hardest part to understand is the first chapter before you get explained the premesis of the book. I don't know how to explain the story without spoiling the story, but it was a intresting read 📖

There is nothing like a good who done it to pass the time. This was a pretty good take on sluicing. Our main character relives the murder of a woman at party each night, each day in 8 different people attending the party. The only way out of this never ending loop is to solve the mystery using his insights he gets from different perspectives from each character. Cool idea, yes? Yes and no. Didn‘t really work. Bold ideas though 👏🏻👏🏻

Mehso-so

I really wanted to like this more, but it needed a MUCH better editor. So much of it was details that were extraneous & didn't propel anything forward (plot, an understanding of the characters, etc). I even loved the narrator but still found it dragging. And it ended up centering around social justice issue which it then barely commented on - why introduce it at all? That being said, it might be the most original murder mystery I've ever read.

WhatWouldJaneDo Agreed, especially about the ending. I felt like the author wanted to be so mysterious about who Aiden and Anna really were but then use them to make this big point and it just didn't balance out. I thought their relationship was way too thin, I didn't get why he cared about her so much other than her name being the only thing he remembered when he first woke up. 2mo
FreeReadAndWrite @WhatWouldJaneDo SAME! So much of this story that would have been interesting was bogged down in details that didn't make sense or didn't matter 2mo
FreeReadAndWrite @WhatWouldJaneDo which is maybe extra disappointing bc in concept it was so cool 2mo
WhatWouldJaneDo @FreeReadAndWrite right?! It's such a cool set up and I love puzzly stuff so I was really underwhelmed. 2mo
Rachel_nyc I agree. I made the decision early on while reading to try my best not to get bogged down with plot holes or extraneous details so I enjoyed it a bit more than it seems you did but it was hardly perfect. Definitely deserves points for originality though! 2mo

Pickpick

This mystery follows a man who wakes up in a different person every day and lives the same day over and over. The day that Evelyn Hardcastle is killed. The story sucked me in and I had to finish it! Highly recommend this one!

MaleficentBookDragon I had a hard time with this book at first. But when he jumped to his second host, I was completely hooked and ended up loving it. 2mo
