From the very first page I knew I was going to love this book. It‘s disturbing, darkly erotic and unabashedly gothic. The concept of this book is unusual yet inspired and Grenouille, the main character, is frighteningly creepy, moving from social outcast to man most hated, then man adored. An incredibly good read and one I‘ll certainly read again. Also, that cover is beautiful. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

After finally finishing the book (every time I sat down to read it I ended up falling asleep) I still can't make up my mind. The character of Grenouille is strange, confusing, disgusting and horrible. He is an orphan but he is evil, for me he wasn't a character that I could like or understand why he was doing what he was doing. I am not sure whether I enjoyed the book or not...not sure I will ever make my mind up about it

I don‘t usually read thrillers, which this is, essentially. But it‘s so fascinating—a character with “a perfect sense of smell” who becomes a perfumer do he can learn to make smells and affect people‘s behavior. Also, murder. #1001books

This book has been on my TBR for ages and I have it in paperback but find physical books awkward to read. According to Kindle this is the first time it‘s been available as an ebook and, as an added bonus, it‘s #99pOnKindle today 😃

SailorMoon So I'm not the only one who prefers e-books to the physical copies! I have always read paper books, but some editions are made with particular papers that give me goose bumps when I hold them! 😰 7mo

The writing was gorgeous, but the plot flitted around quite a bit. The story of a murderer, but with very little murder until close to the end. However, if you ever want to read about the painstaking process to extract essential oils from plants, this book is for you.

callielafleur
I am taking serious liberties with this, but I would love to count it for the "MC with an invisible illness" category in #Booked2018 - Grenouille is born without scent of his own (making him seen invisible to others), and has an extremely heightened sense of smell himself. What do you think, @Cinfhen @4thhouseontheleft @BarbaraTheBibliophage ? ?

The story of the young Grenouille who is only able to express himself through the dictionary of scents and the alphabet of perfume. Any words not referring to a smell wasn't understandable for him. Abstract words like moral, justice, responsibility, thankfulness were only enigmatic concepts. Wonderfully written.

In 1738 Jean Baptiste Grenouille is born in Paris to impossible circumstances and a grim future. He eventually is sold as a laborer to the owner of a perfumery, Monsieur Grimal. Grenouille obsession with scents and smells starts him on an uncontrollable obsession with owning these scents. He becomes monstrous and cruel in his murderous calculations.
There are a lot of lengthy descriptions that slow the story down, but it is a really good story.

This exquisitely written novel is almost obscenely descriptive: you can practically smell every word of it. The build-up is slower than I would have liked, but the denouement is so deliciously weird and depraved that it‘s mostly worth it. If I were to describe to you the surreal ending, you would definitely side-eye me, but somehow it all works (if you‘re into that kind of thing). A bizarre, wicked, amoral and deeply nihilistic book.

WTF was that ending!? Despite how slow-moving the book was, with a TON of description (slow-moving and lots of description is not usually my thing), I was ready to rate this 3 stars (ok) or possibly even 3.5 stars (good), but if I was the kind of person to throw a book across the room (I‘ve never done it), this is the book I would have thrown due to the ending! WTF was that!? Cont in comments...

LibraryCin Other than the end, I surprised myself by not skimming and being completely bored by all the description of the scents and such. But, seriously!? What a ridiculous ending! Oh, the title is a bit misleading; well, there are murders, but they are almost all within a very short interval close to the end of the book. I‘m giving it the extra .25 star for somehow managing to keep my interest despite all the description and nothing happening 1y
