Then She Was Gone
Then She Was Gone | Lisa Jewell
THEN Ellie Mack was many things. She was fifteen. She was the youngest of three. She was her mother's golden girl. She was heading towards a perfect post-exams summer holiday, with her whole life ahead of her. And then, she was gone. NOW Laurel Mack is living in the past. It's been ten years since Ellie disappeared, and Laurel's never given up hope of finding her daughter. But now, she no longer has a choice in the matter. It's time to let go. And then one day, as she is slowly piecing her life back together, Laurel meets Floyd in a local cafe. An unexpectedly charming mathematician, he sweeps Laurel off her feet. Before she knows it she's meeting his daughters, and his youngest Poppy takes Laurel's breath away. Because Poppy is so like Ellie was at that age. And now, all those unanswered questions that have haunted Laurel come flooding back. What happened to Ellie? Where did she go? Who still has secrets to hide?

An enjoyable listen. Not very many plot twists and everything was explained in full with no room for guessing . But overall it was a good and tragic story.

A great mystery story about Ellie Mack's disappearance and how things aren't always as they seem. Laurel is surviving the loss of her daughter, the deterioration of her marriage and difficult relationships with her remaining children when Floyd walks into her life with his remarkably familiar daughter, Poppy. Lots of twists and turns and wonderful British slang!

Another spectacular British phrase I've never come across before! This lady did not hand out vegetables or a pillow to sit on, which is what I thought a squash might be. I had to look this up because it's a drink made with a juice concentrate. This is a new favorite!!

Megabooks I learned about it from Gordon Ramsey‘s Kitchen Nightmares UK version. I love it, too! 2w
TrishB We would never say it like that though 🤷‍♀️ it would be want a drink of squash ....not a. Or in this sentence ‘some squash‘ would be acceptable 😁 (edited) 2w
IamIamIam @TrishB That makes more sense. It should have registered after she said elderflower because I had bought the elderflower concentrate from IKEA once. Lol, I do love that phrase, though! 2w

AmyG Ha! 2w
TrishB I assumed everyone had squash 😁 this is one of the many reasons I love Litsy ♥️ 2w
IamIamIam @TrishB Lol!!! I know, in my area at least, they sell frozen concentrates but not syrups to add to stuff. Coffee syrups or maybe they're in liquor stores but I've only ever seen that kind of thing at IKEA! I assumed it was just a Swedish thing, not a European thing! For me, squash is just a vegetable of varying sizes and colors! 🤗💜 2w
Crazeedi Never knew this! Ha!! Learning from my litsy friends, fabulous!!😍 2w

I love the differences between British English and American English. The imagery that popped into my head was straight out of a medieval castle and I had to wipe the image clean and then saw a guy pulling a flashlight out of a drawer. 😁

scowler1 I often pull a torch from my pocket when I walk across the garden (yard) to put (take) the rubbish (trash) out. 2w
IamIamIam @scowler1 🤣🤣 A torch from your pocket gives me an image of a wizard!!!! I love it! 2w
Karkar I love the differences too! 2w
whippoorwill815 This is too funny because I had the same experience with this (I was reading In the Woods by Tana French). It actually took me a while to figure out they meant flashlight and had been wondering why they were carrying around open flames all the time 😂 2w

Been at Outer Banks, NC the last week and finished this book with a view of the little lake next to our beach house. Overall the book wasn‘t bad. It held my interest, but it wasn‘t overly suspenseful given I‘d had the plot figured out pretty quickly. Still was pretty enjoyable, but not a favorite of mine.

This was book 3/4 of my #BFC2 book goal

I just fundamentally don‘t get this book.
THINGS IT IS NOT:
1) A mystery - There is absolutely nothing mysterious here. The author signposts literally everything. Have a feeling you figured it out after the first suspect is introduced? That‘s b/c you did.
2) A thriller - The plot mostly consists of a middle aged woman going on dates.
3) A psychological character study - Why do the characters do what they do? B/c the author says so.

So...🤷🏻‍♀️

LaurenReads Love this!!! 😂 I‘m going to move this down on my TBR pile 2mo

Day 10 of #30junebooks is SUMMER!
Here in #Tucson, summer means heat. And since everyone wants a nice air-conditioned place to hang out while the kids are outta school, Bookmans is BUSY all day, every day. 📚
I checked my employee recs shelf this morning, and it was totally empty! So I stocked it up with some fun, light summer reads, plus a couple of faves. 😍 I wonder how many days it‘ll be before it‘s empty again. 🤔 #behindthescenesatbookmans

I didn't mind this thriller, but I had some issues with the realism throughout. While this usually wouldn't put me off a book, I couldn't help but repeatedly note how the characters were completely unrealistic, and everything tied up a little too nicely at the end. Overall though, it kept me reading until the end without getting bored.

P.s do you like my iPad case that my little rescue dog “fixed” for me? 🤣 She “fixes” a lot of stuff for us, including handles on two of my favorite bags and my hubbys shoes🤦🏼‍♀️ but she was abused and neglected before she came to her forever home with us, so we can‘t ever be mad at the little sweetie. Chillingly reminiscent of The Lovely Bones - but just as gripping and sorrowful. A story of true loss; a family struggling to find themselves and discover love through loss. Laurel has lost so much, yet discovers herself through her painful struggle. The story isn't so much a whodunit, as it's quite easy to deduce. I found myself crying both tears of sadness and joy until the very last words.

Quick read and so worth it!

This was good. I figured it out ahead of time but that didn't keep it from being well written. I also liked that it was a plot that could be figured out instead of those that cheat by adding in something that was never even hinted at leading up to the conclusion to keep people from figuring out who done it/how ahead of time. The characters in this were real and consistent.
