August roundup. Really loved the wrap up of the series in The Stone Sky. Other hit for me was The Nickel Boys which absolutely broke my heart. Everything else was okay but not must reads, the more I sit and think of them.

“But for a society built on exploitation, there is no greater threat than having no one else to oppress. And if nothing is done, Syl Anahi‘s must again find a way to fission its people into sub-groupings and create reasons for conflict among them. There‘s not enough magic to be had just from plants and genegineered fauna; someone must suffer, if the rest are to enjoy luxury” (p. 334)

An incredible cautionary tale. Don‘t miss this trilogy.

Finally finished! I have been away on a work trip so all my library reads stopped and I picked this back up again. It was hard to remember everything that was going on, but it‘s just such an incredible story. I can‘t wait to read it all all over again.

Evil, eating Earth! What a finale! It was slow-going for a while, but it was all worth it for the world building and that ending. We got backstories on Hoa and the obelisks, and everything else came together to finish the best series I've ever read. N.K. Jemisin is a goddess. What. A. Mind.

What an excellent ending to the Broken Earth trilogy. This entire series had such good worldbuilding, amazing interpersonal relationships and evoked character emotions so well! Even the ending itself, it was both hopeful yet melancholic. I truly think this is one of the more unique fantasy novels to read, and I will most definitely read other books from this author.

I read the first book ages ago and the second two just this month. And wow. Incredible worldbuilding and really amazing writing. Second person POV in an epic fantasy sounds crazy, but man does she make it work. If you're a fantasy nerd and haven't read this yet, get going! 🤓

KatieDid927 I just bought the whole trilogy from Barnes & Noble... ha! 4mo
j9brown @KatieDid927 Nice! I think you'll be really into it 😁 4mo
rkeo I was trying to figure out what to call that POV. I didn't think it was 2nd person, because it's not told from our POV, but Hoa's. Hoa is telling Essun the entire story so it reads like 2nd person POV, but is it? I have so much difficulty describing it to people. 3mo
See All 6 Comments
j9brown @rkeo I've seen other people describe it as 2nd person so I just went with it. Even if it isn't quite accurate, I think it's a fair shortcut description if you're trying to about spoilers. 3mo
rkeo How is that a spoiler? We learned in the first book Hoa was the narrator. I've been trying to figure out how to describe the POV since the Fifth Season. It's so unique! I just love her writing. 3mo
j9brown @rkeo Ah, it felt spoiler-y for some reason 🤷‍♀️ I read the first book way too long ago, should have given it a re-read before finishing the rest. She really is a fabulous writer! 3mo

There were so many powerful passages in this last book. I‘ll definitively be revisiting this one a few times.

It's weird. Even though I enjoyed each book and the world building in these was phenomenal, with an impressive but fitting ending at the end of this one, I'm still glad this trilogy is over and feeling just meh about all three books together as a whole. I'm not regretful I read this, but it's not in my favorites list either.

SailorMoon It's funny because most people I know love Sci-Fi for your same reason: it helps them escape from the real world... while for me it's the opposite!
