Paradise Lost (Revised)
Paradise Lost (Revised) | John Milton
John Milton's celebrated epic poem exploring the cosmological, moral and spiritual origins of man's existence In Paradise Lost Milton produced poem of epic scale, conjuring up a vast, awe-inspiring cosmos and ranging across huge tracts of space and time, populated by a memorable gallery of grotesques. And yet, in putting a charismatic Satan and naked, innocent Adam and Eve at the centre of this story, he also created an intensely human tragedy on the Fall of Man. Written when Milton was in his fifties - blind, bitterly disappointed by the Restoration and in danger of execution - Paradise Lost's apparent ambivalence towards authority has led to intense debate about whether it manages to 'justify the ways of God to men', or exposes the cruelty of Christianity. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

I finished reading this yesterday. Had some difficulties figuring out some pronunciations and I‘m not familiar with a good number of the references Milton made, but it was still an enjoyable read! I can see why it‘s said to be one of the greatest works of English literature. I would love to take a course on Milton to understand this poem better and found reading A Preface to Paradise Lost helped me. I feel I really ought to give this 10/10

Suet624 This is a book I always say I‘m going to read and then I forget about it. 4y
Argon Haha, yeah it was on my reading list for about 5 years after I read part of it for a class. Glad I finally got around to it! 4y

Described as one of the greatest epic poems in the English language, Paradise Lost tells the story of the Fall of Man, a tale of immense drama and excitement, of rebellion and treachery, of innocence pitted against corruption, in which God and Satan fight a bitter battle for control of mankind's destiny.

A first edition of Paradise Lost (1667) still in its original binding and with a manuscript inscription from contemporary Poet Laureate John Dryden ?

The Next in Majesty, in both ye Last
The Force of Nature could no farther go;
To make a Third, she joyn'd ye former two.

Today we drove over an hour to Books A Million to spend our gift card we got for Christmas ? It was so much fun and of course really, really hard to decide what to buy. In the end this was our haul plus two books for the kids: The Day the Crayons Went Home and The Pout Pout Fish and the Bully Shark.

The guy at the checkout was amused by our choices, "In the mood for some 'light' reading I see" ?

Tdumatrait Love that this will come to television. I have always loved Milton. I teach an abbreviated version to my 8th graders every year. 7y
JoeStalksBeck @Tdumatrait me too! I love him but I adore Dante. I wish they would do an accurate account of The Divine Comedy 7y
Tdumatrait @JoeStalksBeck it would be interesting to see dueling networks but each on TV. I think Dante would be more relatable to a teenage audience. Older generations and younger generations would probably go for Milton. My high schoolers always preferred Dante to Milton. Guess they would rather pick their poison. 7y

#disabilities
John Milton was not born blind, however he was by the time he composed "Paradise Lost." To paraphrase Edward Hirsch, Milton's use of non-rhyming blank verse in "Paradise Lost" established & confirmed it as the pattern with the greatest equilibrium in English. Milton's thunderous lines rank with Shakespeare as among the most beautiful ever written. Milton addressed his blindness in several of his greatest sonnets.

Moray_Reads I love Paradise Lost. Milton was a genius. My parents are getting me the Folio Society edition for my birthday and I'm very excited 7y
vivastory @Moray_Reads That sounds beautiful! Have you read "Samson Agonistes"? I think it is Milton's most underrated work. There are passages that approach the same magnitude achieved in "Paradise Lost. " 7y
Moray_Reads I have! It's wonderful. I studied the English Civil Wars as an undergraduate so it was his political writing I read first but my tutor gave me a copy of Samson and I loved it 7y
vivastory @Moray_Reads Milton's portrayal of Satan in "Paradise Lost" makes him one of the most interesting epic literature characters. He's definitely the greatest character in it. If you haven't heard it, I recommend Dylan Thomas reading of a few passages. 7y
