Machado's "Her Body and Other Parties" is a mixed bag of weird short stories that went from interesting to blah and back to interesting followed by what did I just read..

This is haunting and brave and visceral. She isn't afraid to talk about much less write in detail about sex and violence and each one will leave a reader with some kind of emotion. A solid 3 ⭐ for me as out of the 8 shorts, I loved 3 of them.

"Life is too short to be afraid of nothing. And I will show you." The author's fabulous debut collection of stories, cruel and devastating, erotic and sensual, revealing the mysterious and dark sides of both body and mind through a mix of pop culture with fairytale myths

I worry sometimes that when we think of “diverse books“, we revert to thinking about kids/YA and school reading lists. I've written today about the importance of ALL readers diversifying their personal reading lives. Diverse reading makes us better people, and the world a better place. Plus, Her Body & Other Parties is a PERFECT spooky Halloween read! http://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/diverse-books-reading-lists/ #DiverseBooks #DiverseReads

Hard to rate - I expected to love this but it's a bit more complicated. It is really sticking in my head and I just want to discuss/hear what other people thought so that's probably a win. I think the story that really worked for me is most reader's least favorite so that's an interesting #unpopularopinion.

j9brown Which one is that? I wouldn't call any of them a "favorite" myself, but I think the one where the women were fading into invisibility, and the eating disorder one worked the most for me. And the one with the apocalypse quietly happening in the background was the only one that actually felt like a whole story. I feel like something might have gone over my head with some of the others! ? 1mo
WhatWouldJaneDo @j9brown I liked the fading women one, but I really got into the Law and Order one. It was weird and yes, overlong, but I thought that worked for the theme and I was really into the eldritch horror thing. 1mo
j9brown @WhatWouldJaneDo Oh yeah! Too long for sure, but there were some really cool and creepy and even funny bits in there! 1mo
WhatWouldJaneDo @j9brown I hi-lited so much of it! But then I listened to the Literary Disco ep about it and they seemed to think it should have been cut from the book lol. I skimmed some reviews and it seems like if it gets mentioned it's as a least favorite. 1mo
j9brown @WhatWouldJaneDo It's an odd fit I guess but I thought it broke up the book in an interesting way, like a weird interlude. 🤷‍♀️ I can see why some people weren't into it, though, it was an unexpectedly strange sort of format for a short story! 1mo

1. I made the mistake of buying this one. It seems I need the deadline of a library due date to get me to read a book.
2. The Going to Bed book by Sandra Boynton. Actually, after two kids, I have memorized most of Boynton's oeuvre.

TheAromaofBooks lol there is a children's Christmas board book that I loved so much when I was little that Dad read it to me over and over and over again - and he would read every single word, including things like the copyright information and the ISBN number on the back. We still read it every Christmas Eve - so maybe when your kids are in their late 30's, you'll still sit them down & read The Going to Bed Book! 😆 2mo

From “The Resident” - A thought I recognised from every time I‘ve had my work pinioned by the label of my identity. Any writers reading: you‘re more than a trope, and your ideas are broader and more important than the ways they are labelled.

Loved this collection of short stories. Each masterfully written, with haunting premises and beautifully crafted characters. There‘s a lot to unpack in each story. It‘s not a beach read; it‘s a critique and a mirror and a secret smile, a nod from a compatriot and the wrong path in the dark.

Whew! I finally finished this collection I put down so many times. Despite my love for weird books, this one was too experimental for me. I enjoyed a few but didn't care for the rest. Some were painful to plod through, & I had no idea what was going on. 1.75⭐️s rounded up.

A very strange and haunting collection, sometimes thoughtful and insightful, often grotesque, all tied together by women's relationships with their own bodies. First couple of shorts were the best. But even the ones I didn't really "get" were well-written.

These short stories definitely hold a promise for future work by Carmen Maria Machado. In this book I loved some of the stories (The Husband Stich, Inventory, Mothers, Eight Bites, Real Women Have Bodies), while others did nothing for me (Especially Heinous, The Resident, Difficult at Parties). In general though they are very well written and sometimes hard ro read because the women in the stories are struggling with their bodies and their lives.

I love eerie magic realist short stories. I loved how raw and quietly frightening they were, and how small vignettes sketched in fascinating characters and bizarre worlds. Great book to follow You Know You Want This - a similar tone but more tender and melancholy than monstrous. I also recommend for fans of LGBT relationships being seamlessly included in non-romance fiction. At least - gender was a little confusing sometimes but I think so!

This struck me as such a perfect way to show the awkwardness of being tormented by someone, but not being able to explain that to their loved one because, in their eyes, your tormentor is a different (better) person. #shortstories #popsugarreadingchallenge #pop19

Read for #ReadingWomenChallenge #LambdaLiteraryAwardWinner. I had NO idea what this was going in. Mostly, these weren‘t for me. A few of the stories I enjoyed despite their strangeness. a few of them were just WAY TOO weird.. and a couple of them I just didn‘t have a freaking clue what was happening. She definitely writes in a way that intentionally keeps the reader off balance.. but some of them were just 😒.

Hello Litsy! My first post. I just finished this book while visiting my brother-in-law for the weekend.

4.5🌟 rounded to 5🌟 I really loved these dark stories. One in particular, told as synopses of fictionalized Law & Order SVU episodes, really stuck with me - what a unique format. Though hard to stomach at times, the constant thread of how women and our bodies are seen/treated/experienced rang true and feels important to give voice to.

Lauram Welcome to Litsy! 7mo

Almost DNF‘d because of this piece. I literally had no clue what was going on, yet I also felt like there was too much going on. It meanders around from an imaginary (I think) baby in past & present, a possibly mentally ill woman in present, long, drawn out descriptions of nature & food in the fridge, then domestic violence...At this point I don't even know if anything the narrator described is reality. I hope the remaining stories get better!

ItsAngel @lele1432 I just made it to this part and I have no idea what to think!! From what you said you‘re glad you pressed on. I think I may give it a little more time, but boy is this a strange book. 7mo

If you want to read a collection of weird and dark stories then this is for you. Fairytale and apocalypse themes throughout that gave me a queerer Angela Carter vibe from the first story. for me that‘s a massive win.

"The Husband Stitch" from this collection was a little horrifying! There's a kid version of this lol?? I'm glad I never read "The Green Ribbon" when I was younger!

I thought this was a solid short story, and pretty explicit, with themes surrounding marriage, desire, and how it feels to give your S.O. basically everything but that still not being enough. I'd give this story 3 or 3.5 stars. Trying to get through the rest of the collection today.

This was a hard one for me - while I really loved some of the stories and thought the writing was beautifully done, some were a either a drag to get through or didn‘t feel complete enough to move on to the next.

The Husband Stitch, Inventory, and The Resident were definitely the standouts for me. I loved reading a modern take on “The Green Ribbon”!

Yeah, read two more stories and decided to bail. The writing here really grated on me, with a lot of sentences that go nowhere, and seem to exist just to impress. I‘m not a prude, but sex was also used as a poetic device in ways that really made me roll my eyes and only make the characters and stories feel underdeveloped. #dnf
