The Cottingley Secret
The Cottingley Secret: A Novel | Hazel Gaynor
103 posts | 67 read | 2 reading | 151 to read
The New York Times bestselling author of The Girl Who Came Home turns the clock back one hundred years to a time when two young girls from Cottingley, Yorkshire, convinced the world that they had done the impossible and photographed fairies in their garden. Now, in her newest novel, international bestseller Hazel Gaynor reimagines their story. 1917 It was inexplicable, impossible, but it had to be truedidnt it? When two young cousins, Frances Griffiths and Elsie Wright from Cottingley, England, claim to have photographed fairies at the bottom of the garden, their parents are astonished. But when one of the great novelists of the time, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, becomes convinced of the photographs authenticity, the girls become a national sensation, their discovery offering hope to those longing for something to believe in amid a world ravaged by war. Frances and Elsie will hide their secret for many decades. But Frances longs for the truth to be told. One hundred years later When Olivia Kavanagh finds an old manuscript in her late grandfathers bookshop she becomes fascinated by the story it tells of two young girls who mystified the world. But it is the discovery of an old photograph that leads her to realize how the fairy girls lives intertwine with hers, connecting past to present, and blurring her understanding of what is real and what is imagined. As she begins to understand why a nation once believed in fairies, can Olivia find a way to believe in herself?

PROMPT: FAIRIES

Can Olivia have some connection to Elsie and Frances who lived 100 years ago?

Is the connection somewhere in the pages of the rare books in the bookshop, SOMETHING OLD, that Olivia's grandfather left her?

Is it in the story she finds that leads her to believe in herself like Elsie and Frances believed in FAIRIES?

Another slow pace reading, character driven story. Set part in London and part in Ireland. Two time lines. Olivia inherited her grandfather‘s bookshop and there is a photo of two girls and a manuscript that connect these girls with her grandmother who has now Alzheimer. These girls claimed that they saw fairies. Olivia will search the truth behind the photos. Also about family relations/secrets, second chances and what is home for Olivia⬇️

Gissy The story is so pretty but I can understand that is not for everyone. I really enjoyed it. Love the audiobook because of the Irish accent and traditions mentioned here. This book has been in my tbr forever😳but I finally I read it. There some gifts I liked in this box. 3.8/4⭐️

• Read in May 2021 for Litsy Markup Postal Book Club #LMPBC Round 11 - #GroupS

I absolutely adored this book. For 9 hours I was 9-years-old again believing in fairies, sprites, leprechauns, and wee beings of every sort. It took me through a magical sphere and gently brought me back to reality … almost. 🧚🏻‍♀️

JazzFeathers It has been in my TBR since it came out. I really need to read it. I love magical realism and the 1910s/1920s, so l don't know why l'm waiting so much 🙄 3y

I loved my #LMPBC book this time. 🥳

Dual timelines, hist-fic, a modern-day heroine that doesn‘t suck, and famous fairies.🧚🧚‍♀️🧚‍♂️ What‘s not to love? My first book by this author, but I really like her style so I think I will check out some more.

The book is on the way to you, Amy!

A charming account of the Cottingley fairy sensation of the 1920s with a parallel story of Olivia's choice to leave her unsatisfying life behind for new adventures. A bit fluffy for me but a nice escape read. See comments for the accompanying book, which should absolutely not be missed!

I‘ve been in a bit of a reading slump since finishing school, so I‘m trying to focus on light fiction for a bit in hopes of breaking that. This certainly fit the bill! I‘m not a huge fan of the back-and-forth-in-time trope that seems to be so prevalent in modern fiction, but it worked well here.

Very good. Enjoyed this story as it shows a different side to a well known story as the main character is connected through her Grandmother to the sisters who were pictured with The Cottingley Fairies in 1917. Using original sources as research for this book as she interviewed Francis's daughter, it shows as it is written well.

I finally finished the last book of the #LMPBC from last round. It's a fictionalized take on the true story of the Cottingley fairies, which I had read about many years ago. I enjoyed this account, though I found myself more interested in the present day story than that of the past. Still, it's a nice, magical story. I would give it 3.5⭐

⭐️⭐️
.
The cover was absolutely STUNNING, and was what really drew me in - because I had never heard of this book before
.
Unfortunately, as much as I wanted to love and adore this, I felt like everything was obvious, and that the plot was revealed too early. I solved the mystery because it was so heavily alluded to and foreshadowed, and it very quickly became chick lit.

Historical fiction based off of Conan Doyle‘s article about fairies. Slow-moving plot with not a lot of what we want to see—fairies and Conan Doyle. Still, this cover is delightful and I really wanted to protect the main girl.

In the midst of war, two young girls find mystery and magic that will come to shake the world. This book made me cry in several places. It also gave me a greater understanding of why Sir Arthur Conan Doyle endorsed the photos, for I've always struggled to reconcile how the man who introduced us to Sherlock Holmes could bounce so far the other direction, from logic to whimsy.
