In Farleigh Field
In Farleigh Field: A Novel of World War II | Rhys Bowen
World War II comes to Farleigh Place, the ancestral home of Lord Westerham and his five daughters, when a soldier with a failed parachute falls to his death on the estate. After his uniform and possessions raise suspicions, MI5 operative and family friend Ben Cresswell is covertly tasked with determining if the man is a German spy. The assignment also offers Ben the chance to be near Lord Westerham s middle daughter, Pamela, whom he furtively loves. But Pamela has her own secret: she has taken a job at Bletchley Park, the British code-breaking facility. As Ben follows a trail of spies and traitors, which may include another member of Pamela s family, he discovers that some within the realm have an appalling, history-altering agenda. Can he, with Pamela s help, stop them before England falls? Inspired by the events and people of World War II, writer Rhys Bowen crafts a sweeping and riveting saga of class, family, love, and betrayal."

Starts fairly exciting, but then slows way down to set the story up. Hang in there, the last half races forward. A dead body with an unopened parachute in almost the same uniform of soldiers quartered at Farleigh Field is found . Individuals from the area now work secret positions in various ministries and they are sent home to see what is going on. Are there spies in the upper class?

I'm my quest to read new to me authors I downloaded this WWII historical and truly enjoyed the journey. I loved how the author developed the character and the story held my attention which is hard when it comes to WWII stories as there are so many out there. #bookspin @TheAromaofBooks

I really love Rhys Bowen‘s books! (Also, I just found out she‘s a woman - I know I‘m an idiot.) Anyway, this one was just as good as the others I‘ve read. Aristocrats doing their bit for the war effort despite how it “looks.” This one also had spies and double agents and diabolical plots. It was exciting! It‘s #1 and my #DoubleSpin for October and my first #BookSpinBingo title. Yay!

A quick, light read with an entertaining plot but there were some huge holes in it. By the end it seemed the author was just trying to wrap up the story without regard to plausibility. Still a pick for me.

Nothing makes Mondays better than #bookmail! This was the other order from Amazon #primeday. This will also be my last #bookhaul besides my monthly subscription box for awhile. I'm on a book buying ban. I have been buying too much and not reading enough. I'm going to try to make it till the end of the year! 🤞🤞🤞

MallenNC Good luck with the book buying ban. It's so hard to resist! I've read My (Not So) Perfect Life and really liked it. I have the audiobook of the other one but haven't listened yet. 7y
tracy.anne8 @MallenNC They are so hard! I made it 5 months last year so I'm keeping my fingers crossed I can make it. My (Not So) Perfect Life looks so cute. I'm glad to know it was good 😊 7y
MallenNC @tracy_anne8 Five months is great. You can do it. I'm not on a ban but I'm trying to use the library as much as I can. The book was fun so I hope you like it. 7y

This isn't a book I would typically read, but I needed an espionage thriller for my Popsugar Reading Challenge. I actually really enjoyed this. It was recommended in a Facebook group I am a part of so I decided to give it a go. It was interesting and kept my attention. I don't like gore or anything scary so this was a great pick! I would recommend it to someone who is trying a new genre. A good in-between!

I was unsure of this book at the beginning, there were a few tiny things which threw me (nothing to put me off reading) but something what would make me judge how it would go (a few choices of words i wasn't sure off)

I am so glad I didn't let them bother me. I really enjoyed this book and I loved the little bit at the end regarding the research she had done and put into this book

In Farleigh Field by Rhys Bowen is a great WWII historical fiction and mystery book that has a lot of intrigue and historical information. It will make you want to break code and have tea on the lawn of a large manor home. And you will fall in love with Feebs and Alfie! A smart and engaging historical mystery. The characters are a lot of fun! I voluntarily reviewed an eARC provided by the publisher & NetGalley.

I instantly fell for Rhys Bowen's stand alone novel. I enjoy her Royal Spyness and Molly Murphy series and her newest novel did not disappoint. Wonderful characters and a plot that kept me guessing until the end. I haven't heard of any plans for a sequel but I would love to see what the rest of the war brings to the wonderful cast of characters.

A quick, entertaining read. It's a bit more modern than my usual historical mysteries, set during WWII. Spies and a murder plot, with a bit of Downton Abbey and some romance thrown in. It's rather open-ended and feels like the beginning of a series. The main characters are well drawn, and I'd love to know what happens next. The first by Bowen that I've read, but clearly not the last.

LauraBrook I'm looking forward to this one. I love her Evan Evans and Royal Spyness series. 7y

Bowen's long been a fav of mine as I've worked my way through all of her series so I was excited to see something new. While still in her historical mysteries sweet spot this has a more serious tone. It reminded me of the British show Foyle's War. I'm a sucker for anything WWII and espionage and so I enjoyed this immensely. I don't know if there'll be a sequel but if so it'll definitely get added to my TBR pile.

I'm annoyed that I guessed the traitor before the first 100 pages, but at least that shows some internal consistency in this quasi-fictional world of WWII England. Spies abound, with MI5, Gestapo and Bletchley operatives chasing each other down in the Kentish countryside. It was enjoyable enough, with solid writing and fully realized characters. Mysteries just aren't really my jam.

SaraRosett @annahenke I really enjoyed the setting and characters! There was one aspect of the mystery that seemed odd to me but I won't go into it here . . . (edited) 7y
SaraRosett Did anyone else wonder about the other escaped airman? If he knew Jeremy had left the prisoner of war camp under German escort and hadn't escaped wouldn't the British officials have known that? Wouldn't he (the airman) be debriefed when the got back to England? Wouldn't he have recognized Jeremy's picture in the paper? Or...did I miss something? (edited) 7y
