Cleopatra's Daughter
Cleopatra's Daughter: A Novel | Michelle Moran
The marriage of Marc Antony and Cleopatra is one of the greatest love stories of all time, a tale of unbridled passion with earth-shaking political consequences. Feared and hunted by the powers in Rome, the lovers choose to die by their own hands as the triumphant armies of Antonys revengeful rival, Octavian, sweep into Egypt. Their three orphaned children are taken in chains to Rome; only two the ten-year-old twins Selene and Alexandersurvive the journey. Delivered to the household of Octavians sister, the siblings cling to each other and to the hope that they will return one day to their rightful place on the throne of Egypt. As they come of age, they are buffeted by the personal ambitions of Octavians family and court, by the ever-present threat of slave rebellion, and by the longings and desires deep within their own hearts. The fateful tale of Selene and Alexander is brought brilliantly to life in Cleopatras Daughter. Recounted in Selenes youthful and engaging voice, it introduces a compelling cast of historical characters: Octavia, the emperor Octavians kind and compassionate sister, abandoned by Marc Antony for Cleopatra; Livia, Octavian's bitter and jealous wife; Marcellus, Octavians handsome, flirtatious nephew and heir apparent; Tiberius, Livias sardonic son and Marcelluss great rival for power; and Juba, Octavians watchful aide, whose honored position at court has far-reaching effects on the lives of the young Egyptian royals. Selenes narrative is animated by the concerns of a young girl in any time and placethe possibility of finding love, the pull of friendship and family, and the pursuit of her unique interests and talents. While coping with the loss of both her family and her ancestral kingdom, Selene must find a path around the dangers of a foreign land. Her accounts of life in Rome are filled with historical details that vividly capture both the glories and horrors of the times. She dines with the empires most illustrious poets and politicians, witnesses the creation of the Pantheon, and navigates the colorful, crowded marketplaces of the city where Roman-style justice is meted out with merciless authority. Based on meticulous research, Cleopatras Daughter is a fascinating portrait of imperial Rome and of the people and events of this glorious and most tumultuous period in human history. Emerging from the shadows of the past, Selene, a young woman of irresistible charm and preternatural intelligence, will capture your heart. From the Hardcover edition.

I absolutely loved this series. In this 3rd installment we journey to ancient Rome where Cleopatra's twin children are taken after her death. A fascinating story, told from Selene's perspective.

Crazeedi I hav this book on my tbr I think 3y
Yoricke_SouthAfrica @Crazeedi It's a fantastic book. It's written as part of a series, but can also be read as a stand alone book. I loved it. 3y

Finished my #doublespin just in time! I‘ve had this book for years, and only just now sat down and read it—and I really liked it! I felt that Selene‘s voice was far too mature for a girl of her age, but the story was good.

From the tragic fall of Cleopatra‘s Alexandria to the treacherous hills of imperial Rome, Michelle Moran spins a captivating tale of the daughter of Egypt‘s most famous queen, a princess whose courageous determination to survive is as exciting and dramatic as the time in which she lived.

BacklistReader I have this one on my tbr. So glad to see someone enjoyed it since I picked it up at a garage sale solely based on cover and title and haven‘t heard anything about it. 3y
STORYBOOK-CAFE @BacklistReader I really think you'll enjoy it. Some of the best books I ever picked up were just out of a stack at garage sales or honestly goodwill just because I liked the cover. They usually sit in a corner for ages unread until I finally decide to open them and then they become a brand new treasure. 3y
BacklistReader @Java_Books I‘ve just bumped it higher on my list. Maybe it will finally get read this year... 3y

I‘ve read very little about Cleopatra but ever since first learning about Egypt she has been one of my favorite people and I need to learn more.

Really enjoyed this historical fiction read. Loved finding out what happened to Cleopatra's only surviving child while seeing an insight to Ancient Roman culture.

#TBRtemptation post 3! So this is the story about the time Genghis Khan's eldest daughter met Joan of Arc and the craziness that ensued. ......j/k 😜. Selene's legendary parents are dead, and she gets carted off to Rome in chains alongside her twin brother, Alexander. There they are kept under tight watch by the Emperor and must learn to acclimate to Rome and its ways. Her artistry keeps her valuable, but for how long? #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

TrishB Ohhh that sounds interesting! 7y
Birdsong28 Not read this one but read her book called Madame Tussaud about Madame Tussaud (Believe it or not!!😂😂) its really good and full of historical detail. 📖📚 7y

Another #awesome #historicalfiction by #MichelleMoran! After the death of their legendary parents, #Cleopatra and #MarkAntony, Selene and her twin brother were brought to the city of Rome. Here, they must quickly learn to adapt to the Roman culture, and learn how to be useful to #Caesar to ensure their survival. #ancientEgypt #ancientRome #ancienthistory

Just finished Cleopatra's Daughter for our #bookclub. I can't wait to discuss this with the others.

LisaCarrozza This was a very interesting book for me, since I love history and I knew absolutely nothing about Selene and her brother Alexander. 7y
Luv2readbookz @LisaCarrozza Me neither. I'd actually wouldn't mind seeing a movie about this. 7y

I've always loved reading about Cleopatra. Reading about her daughter was a first for me. After reading this book, I want to read more about her and her life! The portrayal of Cleopatra Selene was everything I'd imagine the daughter of Cleopatra would be.

Book describes her life in Rome from her perspective...with a happy ending. 💚

Anyone else use a book to carry important documents? Mines carried dr appt cards, dr notes, and prescriptions in the last week. It's like a trusted assistant. And since I love my books so much it's probably the safest place for it...unless I misplace my book. But that almost never happens. 😉

rubyslippersreads As long as it's not a library book. 😄 8y
QuoteQueen Haha @rubyslippersreads I don't do library books. They frown upon writing in the books. And I tend to do a lot of underlining. 😜 I also have a hard time parting with them. They become a piece of me when I read them. 💚📚 8y
rubyslippersreads @VeteransWife512 You have a lovely relationship with your books. 💕 8y
Amandajoy My problem is remembering which book I was reading! I've lost my eyeglasses prescription more than once this way. 8y
QuoteQueen @Amandajoy oh man that sucks. I lost mine in my purse...should have brought a book that day...forgot it was in there then probably threw it away. 😕 8y

Little mister stole my book! I guess he wanted to read it too. Though he's a much faster reader than I. He said "the end" in a matter of minutes. He said it was a good book.

Godmotherx5 He wouldn't know "the end" unless someone is reading to him...? 8y
QuoteQueen @Godmotherx5 we read to him, when he lets us (aka when he doesn't steal the book to "read" it himself lol). ? he loves books. My proudest moment was when I dropped him off at daycare he headed straight for the bookshelf! ??? Proud Mommy moment! 8y

I was debating what to read next. I want to continue the Fringe novels but not liking the first one has me a little scars I might not like the other two. And I need something that'll reach out and grab me to get me out of this slump. Got through book 1 by shear will! So this is the one I chose and after I will come back to the Fringe novels. 😊

About halfway through this book it was just a so-so read for me. I stuck with it and the last half paid off. I enjoyed the history and the story of Selene and Alexander. Of course, I also liked the author's notes at the end of the book. Now I find myself wanting to re-watch the TV series Rome and finally watch Spartacus. 🏛

My newest book purchase! 😍

After reading Cleopatra's Shadows I wanted more ancient historical fiction of the Greek/Roman/Egyptian persuasion. Actually, it's kinda hard to find browsing bookshelves. They really need to make historical fiction its own section! Who's with me?!?!?

Anyways, can't wait to read it!!!

TheNextBook I've been thinking about grabbing this one. A really good book is a Margaret George. It's lengthy but really well imagined. I loved it. 8y
QuoteQueen @TheNextBook at one point I had two copies of that book. But then while in storage the box with my books got wet and I lost many. I know one was destroyed but I wonder if I have the second somewhere. I still haven't read it and would love to now that I have more time to read! 8y
