And the Sea Will Tell
And the Sea Will Tell | Vincent Bugliosi
"Grips you by the throat from beginning to end."Cleveland Plain Dealer ALONE WITH HER NEW HUSBAND on a tiny Pacific atoll, a young woman, combing the beach, finds an odd aluminum container washed up out of the lagoon, and beside it on the sand something glitters: a gold tooth in a scorched human skull. The investigation that follows uncovers an extraordinarily complex and puzzling true-crime story. Only Vincent Bugliosi, who recounted his successful prosecution of mass murderer Charles Manson in the bestseller Helter Skelter, was able to draw together the hundreds of conflicting details of the mystery and reconstruct what really happened when four people found hell in a tropical paradise. And the Sea Will Tell reconstructs the events and subsequent trial of a riveting true murder mystery, and probes into the dark heart of a serpentine scenario of death.

This book is waaaayyy too long. And the author is so smug. Yes he is a famous lawyer and this is a famous and in itself super interesting true crime case but man, was it annoying. I wish it was 300 pages less and written by an objective author.

Librarybelle Definitely not adding this one to my tbr! 11mo
Kristy_K I agree about his smugness! I enjoyed Helter Skelter by him, but the rest of his books he comes across very conceited. 11mo
BarbaraBB @Kristy_K I‘m glad you know what I mean! 11mo
Megabooks Yea! I thought he was so smug in the Manson case one! Good observation 👍🏻👍🏻 11mo
BarbaraBB @Megabooks In that one too? It‘s annoying and I am glad that I‘m not imagining it! 11mo
Suet624 Smug indeed. 11mo
BarbaraBB @Suet624 You think so too? I feel kinda relieved! 11mo

2.5 ⭐️

Really strong first 1/3 - the story of two couples who find themselves on an uninhabited atoll a thousand miles from anywhere. One makes it back to the mainland; one doesn‘t.
Pretty good second third - how they get tried, when it unfolds, Bugliosi‘s transition from prosecutor to defense attorney - all good stuff.
And then way, way, WAY too much legalese. Bugliosi includes his entire 5 hour summation to the jury.
Way too much.

Bugliosi details this exotic mystery brilliantly! The days I spent relaxing on vacay had me engrossed in this true crime. The events took place on the uninhabited atoll of Palmyra, just a short sail south of the Hawaiian islands, where I happened to be vacationing 🌴 which allowed me to better envision the tropical setting. Two very different couples meet on the island, some of them never to leave.. a real “truth is stranger than fiction” tale!

Who was the greatest lawyer in the country? In the world? In the UNIVERSE? Vincent Bugliosi! How do we know? Because Vincent Bugliosi tells us so in this book --over and over and over again. Part 1 of this was absorbing; part 2 (ironically, the part about the trial) was less so. I could have done with a little less of the Bugliosi self-worship.

Kaye He was quite full of himself. 😁. 5y
Kaye So now that you‘re done with the book do you think that Jennifer either knew what was going to happen to the Grahams or helped in any way ? That‘s always bugged me. She was used to him leaving and going off alone and also used to hearing him shooting. I‘ve always wondered if she played a role in it. 5y
CocoReads I loved Helter Skelter but struggled through this one. 5y

Amiable @kaye I don't know how to answer with a hidden reply to avoid a spoiler ...but yes. I think yes. 😬 5y
Amiable @CocoReads I also loved "Helter Skelter," and expected more from this one. I guess his fame in the Manson family trials inflated Bugliosi's ego to the point where he became insufferable in writing about this trial. 5y
Kaye @Amiable to reply with a hidden message , click on the little skeleton head on bottom left by the bookmark symbol. That covers up your reply to hide spoilers. I think Bugliosi was a genius and knew it. I think he lived, slept and ate his job. I‘ve liked everything of his I‘ve read so am sorta used to him being like that and didn‘t really notice it. This one is a huge long book but so detailed it‘s amazing. 5y
Amiable @kaye I think the only reason Jennifer got off was because Bugliosi was a masterful attorney and he was able to create enough reasonable doubt that the jurors felt they had no choice but to vote not guilty. Knowing that "not guilty" was not the same as being "innocent." I just wish an editor had been able to craft the narrative in a way to have less Bugliosi inserting his braggadocio into the story. 5y
Kaye Yea I get what you‘re saying.I just remember Bugliosi making a big deal out of refusing to defend clients who he thought were really guilty. I think Jennifer had him puzzled because she really didn‘t seem concerned about it in the least. I‘ve always thought there was a slight chance Buck killed the Grahams without Jennifer knowing about it until afterwards. She had no choice at that point than to go along with him, being stuck out on the island. 5y

The penultimate no bodies murder trial with a successful conviction. Bugliosi another near impossible case solved. The books description of the island of Palmyra almost as horrific as the murders themselves.

Part 1 of this book was great, the true story of two idealistic couples that end up on an isolated atoll at the same time and only one couple leaves the island. Then you hit Part 2- written by one of the defense attorneys. This portion is way too long and self-congratulatory. I recommend reading the first part and skipping the second part- you can look everything up on the internet to see the results of the court cases!

After loving Helter Skelter I have read a couple other Bugliosi books with high hopes but they just don‘t live up to it.
I was engrossed in the first 2/3 of this book but in the final parts I found myself growing bored and constantly flipping forward to see how much I had left. He rambles too much and loses my attention.

I started this book probably 10 years ago and never finished it, but I have a feeling I should give it another go. Two couples stranded on an island and one couple ends up dead. Very mysterious! And Vince B is a bad ass MOFO.
So yeah #SOS #ABBAinAugust

And the Sea Will Tell | Vincent Bugliosi

I love when I know random stuff (like answers to questions at trivia night) just because I had read it in a book.

I knew what an “atoll” was and got that question right (to the amazement of my teammates)...but the ONLY reason I knew it was because of having read the tagged book.

There was also a question about the Stephen King book 11/22/63 which I also immediately knew.

Yay for book knowledge scoring trivia points!

Vincent Bugliosi is well known for Helter Skelter, but he has quite a few other good books, and this is my favorite (next to HS of course!). It has many interesting factors going for it. Bugliosi actually is the defense attorney for one of the accused. The crime took place on an abandoned island that was literally only inhabited by four people. Two survived, two did not. A very atmospheric book. #SEEWHATIHAVEWON
