People of the Book | Geraldine Brooks
As meticulously researched as all of Brooks' previous work, People of the Book is a gripping and moving novel about war, art, love and survival. When Hanna Heath gets a call in the middle of the night in her Sydney home about a precious medieval manuscript that has been recovered from the smouldering ruins of war-torn Sarajevo, she knows she is on the brink of the experience of a lifetime. A renowned book conservator, she must now make her way to Bosnia to start work on restoring the Sarajevo Haggadah - a Jewish prayer book - to discover its secrets and piece together the story of its miraculous survival. But the trip will also set in motion a series of events that threaten to rock Hanna's orderly life, including her encounter with Ozren Karamen, the young librarian who risked his life to save the book. As meticulously researched as all of Brooks' previous work, People of the Book is a gripping and moving novel about war, art, love and survival. Shortlisted for the 2009 Prime Minister's Literary Awards. Australian Book Industry Awards Book of the Year. 'an imaginative tour de force' Good Weekend 'intelligent, thoughtful, gracefully written and original' Washington Post 'a fearless and engaging writer' Courier-Mail

Intertwined themes of cultures impacting each other, of the present interpreting he past, of the past dictating the future. A sacred Hebrew book, created by a 15 c Muslim slave, survives the Diaspora, the Inquisition, and wars. Muslims, Christians, and Jews all have cared for this art piece, protecting it with their lives. Brooks has taken minute details such as a wine stain to create the most amazing stories. The 1 negative - I CAN'T SEE THE MAP.

I love this book. My daughter wanted to be a paleontologist since 4th grade. Until this year, when she had honors chemistry. I think I finally found a career that I could live precariously through her. Ancient book restoration. How cool!!!!

I need your help!

I‘m currently writing a paper about readers‘ advisory in libraries, and part of the paper is to provide suggestions (both fiction & nonfiction) for someone who loved this book. We‘re allowed to use any resource to answer this question, so in addition to research, I wanted to ask my book family!

For those of you who have read it, what did you like about it? Have you read anything similar to it? What would you recommend?

tjwill Have you ever used whatshouldireadnext.com? You type in a title or author, and it gives suggestions! 4mo
candority Thanks @tjwill! I‘ll check it out! I‘ve looked at Novelist, which offers readalikes as well 😊 4mo
tjwill @candority You‘re welcome! Sorry I haven‘t read the book, so I can‘t help on that front. 4mo

Susanita I loved this book. It probably helped that I listened to the audiobook and the narrator did a fantastic job with all the accents. I loved the story too though, especially the way she put it together. There‘s also a nice quote about tolerant and intolerant societies that I just adore. 4mo
CoffeeK8 I loved this book but I‘m not sure of a readalike. Maybe this one 4mo
candority That‘s quite alright @tjwill, all suggestions are helpful! 4mo
candority @Susanita It does sound like a great book! I‘ll have to read it once I‘m done this assignment. 4mo
candority Thank you @CoffeeK8, I‘ll check it out! 4mo

Branwen I love this book SO MUCH! It's actually the book that inspired me to focus on archiving in my MLIS degree! 😍 📚 It might be a bit of a stretch, but I always think of The Sixteen Pleasures by Robert Hellenga when I think of this book. The stories are completely different, but both have the themes of ancient/rare book conservation! I hope that helps! 💕 4mo
candority @silentrequiem Thank you! 4mo
candority @Branwen Wow, that‘s quite the endorsement! Now I definitely need to read this book! 😊 I‘ll check out The Sixteen Pleasures! Thank you so much! 4mo
emtobiasz This one has a similar narrative structure, following a piece of art across owners and centuries: 4mo
candority @emtobiasz That‘s great, thank you! 4mo
Butterfinger I'm starting this book today and decided to see what others thought before I started. How convenient that I saw your post. I'm reading it for Around the World Challenge (Bosnia and Herzegovina). The blurb reminds me of Rachel Kadish's The Weight of Ink. Highly recommend. Hebrew papers found in London and the researchers discovered they were written by a woman who corresponded with a scholar who had been ostracized for radicalism. 4mo
candority @Butterfinger What an awesome coincidence! Thank you for your suggestion. I‘ve added it to my list 😊 I hope you end up enjoying this one! 4mo

Hannah Heath, rare book expert and rebellious adult child, discovers a bunch of tiny-whimsical-sort-of-squished-up-artifacts in the binding of a 15th-century Hebrew manuscript. Intrigued by these tiny-whimsical-sort-of-squished-up-artifacts, she embarks on a page-turning journey. This book about the book is carefully researched, well-crafted, and highly readable— with the exception of penultimate shenanigans ill-suited to a moody, sensitive novel.

A novel about the Sarajevo Haggadah, an illuminated Hebrew manuscript saved during the Bosnian conflict by a Muslim librarian at the National Museum and placed in a bank vault. An Australian rare book specialist is given the opportunity to inspect and conserve the book, which dates back to 15th Century Spain. As she inspects it, she finds evidence that suggests the history of the Haggadah as it changes hands traveling from Spain to Sarajevo.
