I felt really invested in this thriller, and was really disappointed when the ending fell flat for me. I know the journey's most of the fun, but I read it in a few days and now I'm just left with a bad taste in my mouth. The conclusion wasn't all that surprising, and the final twist at the end wasn't a twist. I had high hopes for this book but was ultimately let down. I guess that's 2020 in a nutshell.

I enjoyed many of the stories in this collection. Some were familar, such as Poe's "The Masque of the Red Death" and Hawthorne's "Young Goodman Brown," while others were entirely new to me. That said, this is a smaller collection with only nine stories. I wish the collection was larger and had a wider variety of horror themes. A good, short read for fans of ghost stories. Thanks, #NetGalley!

Hello, everyone! I'm back with a whole new look: my natural brunette hair now featuring a pixie cut plus glasses! ?

Anyways, I wanted to show y'all something I saw on my college campus this morning. Don't worry, I brought it to a librarian's attention and it has since been removed. First of all, to my understanding, none of the children's books featured here deal with "sexual roles". More importantly, THIS is why we need banned books! ?

TrishB Is this generally a big problem in the US? I just don't recall these titles having any backlash in UK - or maybe as my kids aren't young anymore I don't notice? 7y
2BR02B @TrishB Yes, US culture contains many unfortunate throwbacks to our Puritan roots- among them those that believe sex education for youngsters should begin and end with "don't have it until marriage." 7y
TrishB Thanks 👍I would also be the parent that brought it on purpose!! 7y

alisiakae @TrishB I'm that kind of parent. ? In fact, when the North Carolina state legislature passed HB2 (a state bill that wiped out the non-discrimination ordinance Charlotte passed last year that extended protections to LGBT folks - also known as the "bathroom bill"), I sent a copy of George (on this list) to both my State senator and Representative. 7y

#Audiocoloring while listening to the hilarious Rainn Wilson, better known as Dwight Schrute from The Office. I'm getting an eye exam today after I'm done with classes. It will be my first one in years and I may be getting glasses, depending on the results. (I've definitely noticed my eyes are changing.) But my anxiety is starting to kick in since I'll be doing the full exam and I've never had my pupils dilated. 😱

EvieBee Beautiful! I‘ve been meaning to listen to this. I love Dwight. Hope your exam goes well. It‘s not so bad at all. Those glasses you have to wear afterwards seems to be the most annoying aspect of the process. 7y

One of my many #femaleheroes is Virginia Woolf. She was a protofeminist who paved the way for women writers today. As someone who aspires to be a published writer someday, this matters to me. I'm not familiar with her fiction quite yet, but I love her essays Professions for Women, and of course, the iconic A Room of One's Own. This book was highly disturbing. It's hard to review it without giving too much away. I've rated it lower due to the writing feeling somewhat disjointed throughout the story. Also, the constant plot twists and POV switches confused me at times. This book is about one messed up (af!) family and when you're sure you've got the mystery figured out...Walker turns it on its head. Still recovering from this rollercoaster ride. 😱

Great collection of Victorian-era horror stories. The gorgeous illustrations only enhance the spookiness of the tales. My favorite story was Elizabeth Gaskell's "The Old Nurse's Story" (see picture) and my least favorite was Charles Dickens' "The Signalman" (no surprise there, I find him long-winded ?). Beautiful addition to any bookshelf.

I was less than impressed with this book. Although it was a mystery, it moved incredibly slowly and dragged on. The book is definitely more character driven than plot driven, which doesn't work for me with mysteries/thrillers. None of the characters seemed interesting and/or likable, and one was particularly disturbing to me. (No spoilers here! 🤐) But the writing itself was okay.

"When she saw what she had done..."

This thriller about Lizzie Borden was incredibly well written, especially due to its suspenseful, eerie feeling. It was hard to choose whose perspective was my favorite since each of the characters are unlikeable in their own way. ? However, this does not detract from the book, which reminded me a lot of Shirley Jackson's We Have Always Lived in the Castle. Whodunit? You'll have to decide for yourself.

It was a dark and stormy night...

The Breakdown is just as good as Behind Closed Doors, if not better. Although some readers may find the unreliable narrator trope is overused in thrillers, it is one of my favorite plot elements and works perfectly in this scenario. The main character Cass is concerned she is developing early onset dementia and becomes increasingly paranoid, making for a great psychological thriller.

Thanks, #NetGalley!

"...these individuals have thus bravely succeeded in conquering for themselves comparative wealth and social position..."

I have mixed feelings about this book. While it clearly had serious influence on the abolitionist movement, I can't ignore how slavery is still portrayed in an idealized manner. Slaves are depicted as chilidish and unintelligent while slaveholder are often their "saviors". Nonetheless an important piece of history.
