The House on Mango Street
The House on Mango Street | Sandra Cisneros
Told in a series of vibrant vignettes, The House on Mango Streetis the story of Esperanza Cordera, a young girl growing up in the Hispanic quarter of Chicago. For Esperanza, Mango Street is a desolate landscape of concrete and run-down tenements where she discovers the hard realities of life - the fetters of class and gender, the spectre of racial enmity and the mysteries of sexuality. Capturing her thoughts and emotions in poems and stories, Esperanza is able to rise above hopelessness and create for herself "a house all of my own quiet as snow, a space for myself to go" in the midst of her oppressive surroundings.

We've had thunderstorms almost all day. I am SO grateful that Winston isn't scared of thunder. 🙌

I'm starting The House on Mango Street because I wanted another short read, and digging into this gelato. 😋 I'm not sure if Tillamook is a regional thing or not, but if it's in your area then you should definitely pick this up. 🍧

tpixie Our rain starts tonight about midnight!!! And after the last two storms one of my dogs has started being afraid of the rain! (edited) 6d

tpixie @Rachel.Rencher no! I need to look into those — I‘ve never heard of them!! 6d
Rachel.Rencher @tpixie It's like a compression shirt that makes the dog feel snuggled, but they're not worried about their human's anxiety because holding the dog when there are loud noises reinforces that there's something going wrong. It worked wonders for my dachshund. 🐶 6d

Absolutely loved this novella of vignettes about Esperanza, a Hispanic girl growing up in Chicago. It really hit on my weakness for coming of age and didn‘t shy away from mature topics as well. A quick read with beautiful writing and flow of words. Fulfilled prompt : novella for the #readingwomenchallenge

So. I left this book yesterday at the restroom of City Hall MRT Station, & only discovered it after I have alighted at my stop arnd 35 mins later. Frantic, I rushed back only to discover it gone. Went to the Maintenance Office to check whether any one has turned it in - nada. I was already googling what I should do, only to be alerted later in my mobile app that the book has been returned. Is it happening again? Last year, I finished my favorite book of the year (“Priestdaddy”) in January. This could well be a repeat.

I LOVED this book, from the intro to the very last page. You can tell Cisneros is a poet. She catches life in short sentences. These vignettes tell of girls who learn that they are beautiful & of the fear that this knowledge brings in less than a block‘s worth of steps.

*Cont‘d in comments below.👇🏻

monalyisha 1/1: They capture the cadence & content of children‘s speech perfectly: a mix of whimsy, wonder, hilarious nonsense, unexpected insight, & crushing insults. Cisneros understands quiet: both its peace & its ability to speak sad volumes. In fewer than 100 pages, I became an instant fan. I cannot wait to read more (especially her poetry & essays). I cannot imagine the level of connection that a Latinx might feel when reading her words. (edited) 4mo

I wanted to remember where I‘d stopped so that I could easily begin again when I picked up my copy at home. So, I chose to end my lunch break reading with the chapter bearing my name — “Alicia Who Sees Mice.” Granted, it‘s spelled a little differently (& more sensibly 😆) & luckily, I‘ve seen no mice inside lately. 😅

I only read Sandra Cisneros for the first time a few weeks ago, when Three Wise Guys was one of the #litereads during the holidays. It definitely prompted me to grab a copy of The House on Mango Street. I stayed up late to finish it. I definitely really enjoyed it, and it was the exact kind of coming of age novel I enjoy reading. It is the kind of book I see myself revisiting. It definitely makes me interested in reading Cisneros again.

Such a beautiful book!
This book is a collection of vignettes that are at times joyful and at other times sorrowful.
It really was a heartwarming read and most people will connect with alot of what Cisneros says.

Am I Esperanza? Yes. And no. And then again, perhaps maybe. One thing I know for certain, you, the reader, are Esperanza 🧡

I read about this book in a NY Times article about classics that were first novels. My 2018 reading goal is now to read all of the ones I haven‘t read ( 6 more of 15 to go) this slim novel is a series of vignettes that add up to a full story about Esperanza‘s life and what she sees, some of it sweet, some or it sad, some of it powerful. All of it timeless

An interesting book of vignettes about coming of age as the only girl in a large Latino family and Chicano community. It's labeled as a novel but I'd classify it as a poetry book with a loose overall narrative. Full of hopes and dreams and observations about her community and family. This will take some rereads to appreciate the play on words and metaphors.
