Autobiography of a Geisha
Autobiography of a Geisha | Sayo Masuda, G. G. Rowley
4 posts | 3 read | 12 to read
A geisha describes her sale to a geisha house at the age of six, her traditional training, her debut in 1940 at the age of sixteen, and her work at a hot-springs resort, where the realities of everyday life were far removed from the more recognized glamorous geisha quarter of Japan.

Pickpick

Second book of my geisha kick. Sanyo Masuda grew up a poor farmer's daughter that was sold into a geisha house of a hot springs resort. Here we take a look at the lower level geisha that became more like indentured servants and prostitutes as she struggled with depression, tragedy and battled alcoholism. A stark contrast to the romanticized ideal featured in Memoirs of a Geisha.

This #autobiography was written in the 1950s and recounts the author's coming-of-age after she was sold at the age of twelve to a geisha house. It's a "Memoirs of a (Real) Geisha" and a look at the social history of pre-World War II Japan. #ReadJanuary

DebinHawaii This sounds really interesting. Have you read Geisha? By an American woman who spent a year becoming a geisha. I read it after Memoirs of a Geisha. 7y
