A Room of One's Own
A Room of One's Own | Virginia Woolf
"But, you may say, we asked you to speak about women and fictionwhat has that got to do with a room of one's own? I will try to explain." So begins what is widely regarded as the foundation text of feminist literary criticism, Virginia Woolf's A Room of One's Own. Probably Woolf's most readable and entertaining book, it was based on papers delivered at Newnham and Girton Collegesthe two women's colleges at Cambridge University. Never losing sight of her undergraduate audience, Woolf provides a brief history of women's writing in English, a scathing account of the subtle and not so subtle ways in which women have been discouraged from writing, and a recommendation for how to change matters: "a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction." In the process, Woolf takes on women's economic disadvantages, the underfunding of women's education, the discouragement of women from certain kinds of (lucrative) work, the ways in which women are socialized into suspicion of each other, and how women participate in their own systemic oppression. Yet, in spite of these weighty subjects, A Room of One's Own remains throughout funny, light-hearted, engaging for the novice reader while still offering "nuggets" to the worldy-wise. It is, above and beyond all else, a very model of essay writing. This Broadview edition provides a reliable text at a very reasonable price. It contains textual notes but no appendices or introduction.

So inspirational. Woolf breaks down why it‘s been so difficult for women writers to thrive and dispels sexists ideas of the time period. Quick. Motivational. A must for writers and Woolf fans. 5 out of 5 on GR

I blasted through this over the course of a couple of days. All of the themes are as relevant for women in 2019 as they were when Virginia Woolf wrote about them. Some fantastic ideas and insights.

???Happy International Women's Day Litsy! I wish every female writer to have, as Virginia Woolf have said a "Room of Her Own" to create worlds of her own. So I am happy to present female author who I'll be reading this year from horror to fantasy through science, romance to crime and scifi. There is no form of literature that is particularly male or female there are only good texts and bad texts. #shewhowrites makes the world a better place!

I'm not sure what to rate this one. It is very clear about how writing as a woman back then was something of a rare thing due to financial situation and men being a more favorable author. But at the same time this book was also very good but boring. I guess it was so so for me. I think it was probably something very great for previous time periods as it was more relevant.

It wasn‘t a feminist rant and it wasn‘t a pity-party by a man-hater but a collection a really encouraging thoughts for women. Woolf didn‘t accuse or excuse. She simply offered her own thoughts on the station of women and how they can help themselves. I thought it was great.

This book changed my life when I first read it as a budding 16yo feminist. It help me start questioning what I was reading and studying, as well as what women‘s roles were and how they affected me. Despite being written about ninety years ago, it still feels current, which is very sad and frustrating. But Woolf is a fantastic writer and her work is thought provoking and fascinating. A must read for everyone.

My first Woolf. She has a point to make in these essays, but first, what a writer, what a voice. She rages against the history of sexism with class and structured precision, but it‘s all done playfully and with a protracted just-barely-concealed snark. But first she disarms the reader, bringing us in and getting us thinking, and then she talks about books.

Also 4 short stories at the end, including The New Dress, which I‘m still thinking about.

Weaponxgirl Damnit mine didn't have the short stories! I loved this too and only just read it this month. Now determined to try one of her novels again this month 14mo

Trying this, started this am. Also, trying out Libby

Problems I‘m having with Libby, vs Overdrive:

1. Can‘t view available books on wishlist
2. Can‘t find isbn
3. Duration is given as an approximate. Why? Why say approximately 5 hours, if the app knows it‘s 5:02:33?
4. Extra click to go backwards 15 seconds.
5. Bookmarks don‘t show % (but you can find it)
6. When you click the bookmark, there is no way to hide the note

Graywacke 7. I‘m having to figure a lot of stuff out. Not intuitive.

But it does have a lot of extra options too
1y
Graywacke On different note, I didn‘t get the Ali Smith intro it lists on the cover. 😐 1y
Graywacke But, enough complaining. This is my first Woolf and she‘s brilliant and precise and I‘m loving this and fascinated. 1y

Weaponxgirl @Graywacke I really don't want to start again with mine, apparently I've wish listed about 1000 books 😱 1y
Graywacke @Weaponxgirl but my main complaint was that the good books are usually checked out. In overdrive I can list all the books in my wishlist that are available to checkout right now. I can‘t do that in Libby. 1y
Weaponxgirl I hadn't even checked that feature yet, I just got annoyed with the app. One feature it has I like though was telling me how long it will be roughly for when a book I put on hold will come in. 1y
Graywacke @Weaponxgirl yes! I like that too! 1y
iporto Hey @Graywacke ! That's why real books made of paper are the best! Lol 😁. I've read this book last year, and was my first attempt reading Virginia Woolf in english (I've read a few, but always in portuguese). This book is amazing! I wish you a really good time with It! 1y
Graywacke @iporto I took some time to adapt to audiobooks. At first I was resistant, then I came around. It‘s a different experience, and surprisingly can really add to a book. And I can take them in while sitting in traffic driving. 🙂 But I think I agree paper is actually better. 😁 1y
Graywacke @iporto and Hi 👋 1y
Liz_M I can't comment on Libby, but I did enjoy the tagged book. Sadly so much of what she had to say is still relevant. 1y
Graywacke @Liz_M yeah, painfully relevant. (But not so eloquently stated recently.) 1y
iporto @Graywacke i'll give it a try sometime.. 😂. And how is your experience with Mrs Woolf? Liking it so far? 1y
Graywacke @iporto Woolf is so elegant, in that British way of her era. She‘s a joy to listen to. 1y
iporto @Graywacke that she is! I really enjoy reading her works. I have The Waves and her Selected Letters on my TBR. Can't wait for the hollidays to put my reading challenge on track again.. 1y
Graywacke @iporto I didn‘t realize she was such a great stylist. Now that I know I would probably like anything she wrote, I‘m interested in those letters. Thanks for highlighting them, and cool you have read them. 14mo

I'd never read this before as I read Mrs dalloway years ago and didn't really enjoy at the time. But wow! I was missing out. This is a short book but packs a lot of sadly still relevant stuff inside. Particularly enjoyable for me was her talking about how she likes women, something still not said enough when fighting for our rights and her talking about how material things gives people the space to be creative and genius. I love this.

The last time I read this, I was in high school and I hated it. I just finished rereading it, and now I can see I was just not equipped to read such a book then.
