This probably would have only been 4 stars - a little too twistED yet somehow not twistY enough, if that makes sense. But that last chapter/epilogue was so heartbreakingly beautiful that it earned a little extra credit.
Slaughter writes some of the darkest shit I‘ve ever read, and I‘ll read every word. This gripping thriller kept me on the edge of my seat, broke my heart, and sewed it back together again. The best thing about this was the badass female characters. Smart, capable, and relentless, these woman leapt off the page. Trigger warnings for everything, but the real story here is the pursuit of the truth. No matter how horrifying, it will set you free. 5⭐️
Another amazing story, full of intrigue and good characters. Loved how twisted the story was. Some of the chapters written from the father's perspective were irritating but I just skipped them in the end. Loved the book overall.
Book 142
I listened to Pretty Girls, another dark and disturbing novel by Karin Slaughter about abduction and violent rape and murder. It's elaborate and lengthy, but, overall, it's a well-done suspense with some surprises. Enjoyable but not for the sensitive reader. 3.5
🌟🌟🌟🌟A solid dark and twisty thriller for sure. I almost gave it 5 stars but the ending sort of fell apart and ended fell towards typical tropes. Other than that it‘s a rapid fire Paige turner and not for the feint of heart..
This book was so gruesome. It actually made me feel physical revulsion enough to quit with about 20 pages left. I like murder mysteries as much as the next person but this was twisted. 3/10
I'm going through my Audible library and making a re- read/listen list and this is one I didn't know I had in my library. I actually didn't realize how many unread/listened to books I have. I have 167 books in my Audible library and many are due for a second go!
Whoa this book was a little deep in the dark side of humanity. This is the first book by Slaughter that I‘ve read so not sure if she normally writes about such disturbing subjects? I felt the story started out a little slow but definitely picked up in the middle with a few good twists I didn‘t see coming. This one may not be for everyone but if you have a tolerance for disturbing subject matter, I recommend!
This is dark. A story of a family who is utterly broken after the disappearance of their oldest daughter/sister decades ago. While a similar disappearance makes the news, The family is brought together unexpectedly when a tragedy befalls the youngest daughter. However nothing is as it appears, and they don‘t know who they can trust.
Impeccable writing, the characters, the conspiracy. The pacing had me unable to put it down. Horrifying. Wonderful
SO GOOD!
Despite my propensity for true crime, this is my first Karin Slaughter book and it totally delivered.
Such a great plot and character build out.
Checking this off my #bookspinbingo list
I was shocked by the gruesome details and dark nature of this book. I was warned and can understand that it might be graphic for some people. I happened to love the twists and turns and overall story. It kept me on my toes and wondering how it would end. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This book explores some pretty bleak aspects of humanity. Its conspiracies sometimes were more complicated than I could be bothered to keep up with and it also occasionally suffered for being told from multiple perspectives, but overall it was a good read. Just be warned though that it does explore graphic depictions of sexual violence.

Wow! This is pretty dark and the worst part is there are people like this in the world. A true look at the evil people are capable of. I thought the way the story unfolded was excellent. I couldn‘t put it down. Definitely some difficult topics in this book. Just a warning.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
My first foray into audiobooks now that I have a longer commute to work. I was not disappointed. I had a little trouble keeping track of the characters at first, but it was short-lived. The characters are not necessarily the most likable and it takes awhile before you understand the way in which the characters‘ stories intersect. At times, Karin provides TMI with the crime and the goriness of the violence, but I was hooked!!

Does anyone want some Karin Slaughter books? Her books are too dark and gritty for me. I‘m trying to clear out my shelves and I don‘t think all the books will fit in the LFL!
US only (sorry!)

If you are going to read this book, then you need to be aware of the seriously disturbed nature of the violence depicted. Thankfully, @CoverToCoverGirl and @LazyLibrary gave me a warning prior to jumping into this novel. Based on their warnings, I was actually expecting it to be a lot worse. My stomach for twisted is a bit higher than most, I think.
When Julia goes missing, all of her family members find their own ways to cope with the unknown⬇️
Starting this one today. I'm hoping to finish it at work tonight. Has anyone else read it? I'm kind of on a horror/thriller/suspense book kick.
Really good book 👍🏼 well written and the twists were good. Some of them I kind of figured out but not the details, some made me go “OH 😳” and then I was surprised (good surprise) that a couple of my assumptions were wrong.
I recommend this one. It was good. A lot of trigger warnings though so use caution. Thank you @CoverToCoverGirl for being this to my attention.
I‘m throughly enjoying this book, it‘s got some serious trigger warnings though. I‘ll finish it today while in the office.
It was brought to my attention by @CoverToCoverGirl that ‘Blonde Hair, Blue Eyes‘ is a short that leads into this book.
I put a hold on it last night in Libby and this morning it was ready. Perk of being back in the office is I get to listen to this all day.
I started this on Hoopla this morning because it was too dark to read a print book in my car while Mom got her last COVID 💉. I immediately switched to print when we got home. This is an unputdownable thriller. You think you know something, but you never know it all, and Slaughter masterfully leads you through dark secrets and terrifying twists. My first novel by Karin Slaughter. It will not be my last.
Just past the 50% mark and OMG! What the heck just happened. I am simultaneously terrified to keep going and unable to stop reading. 😱😱
If you need me, I‘ll be in my living room with all of the lights on, not sleeping, continuously checking to make sure the security alarm is set.
When a writer is hyped up so much, I usually tend to avoid them. It never lives up to my expectations. So it was for years with Slaughter. And then this book came along and I just flew through it. I was biting my nails till the very end and I have so many books to catch up on now. If you like a good murder-mystery I would strongly recommend this one.

I‘ve been contemplating my feelings about this book for a day now. It was an interesting story. The writing was superb. The characters were well developed. I liked this book, but I didn‘t love it. One of the main reasons was due to the graphic nature of some of the scenes. I can deal with gore. Stephen King is my favorite author. However, some scenarios depicted in this book were too much. I give this book a solid 4 stars! 🌟🌟🌟🌟
Happy New Year, my Litsy friends. 💜 I‘m spending the evening with my family, yummy food, sparkling cider, and a good book. 📚❤️ I hope the new year brings you good luck and many good reads. Cheers! 🥂📚🍾🎊🎈🎉✨💕

It was a mistake to read this as my "before bed" book, because I was instantly hooked and didn't want to put it down so I could go to sleep. The characters are all wonderfully written and flawed enough that I was never sure if I should root for them or not. The book's central mystery was interesting enough, but all of the added layers made it even better, and you're never sure who to trust, even down to the final pages.
Pretty Girls grabbed me on page one and still hasn‘t let me go. It is a fast-paced and engrossing read, but it is also incredibly violent and disturbing so check the trigger warnings before starting this book. I enjoyed the characters and their development through the story, and appreciated the emphasis on family and sibling relationships. 4⭐
My #DoubleSpin pick for October and part of my #Scarathlon2020 TBR! #TeamHarkness @TheAromaofBooks
This was a great audiobook . Narrated by Kathleen Early. A page turner and more horrific than any horror I‘ve read because it‘s so realistic . I guess some subjects are extremely horrific. This is not a read for anyone. Contains: murder, violence , rape, and lots of gore.
Not for the faint hearted.
I think I need a light read after this.
@Moonprismpower I LOVE MY BOX! I love that you used a wax seal.on everything! That was such a nice touch! And the cards and the tote bag so cute. I wonder what Edward Gorey wrote I'll have to look.him up!
My first time reading Karin Slaughter. I really enjoyed her writing style. The subject matter is a little horrifying, and towards the end I was staying up later than usual to keep reading.
I was really looking forward to this since I loved my first Slaughter book, however this one just didn't click for me. Some good suspense, but lots of cliché and overwriting and repetition.
🎧 uhhhhh not what I expected. First book I‘ve read by this author, it includes a separate short story after the book. Narrator is so clear that 2X speed was doable!
Triggers: rape, violence, gore, adult language & situations.
Only small annoyance - too much inner monologue. Otherwise, pretty much loved it. On the edge of your seat Mystery/Thriller. Zipped through it in a day. Thank you Libby! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/3
Bo and I liked this thriller. There was some graphic violence, but it was a great read. Long book but zipped through it, hard to put down.
“No matter what happened to you, no matter what horrors you endured when you were taken away, you will always be my pretty little girl.”
Great day for reading in the backyard. I love starting a new book!
But Callie, how can you be done at only 88%? Apparently there's also a short at the end of this audiobook of Blonde Hair, Blue Eyes, which is actually a prequel. I wonder if this was true in the physical copy?
This was really good, slowly unfolding and surprising me here and there. The main character can be frustratingly thick on occasion, but not to the extent that I grew too frustrated as things slowly occurred to her.

Why has no one told me that Karin Slaughter is hysterical? 🤣🤣 I‘m watching the thriller writers panel on BookCon and she is SO SNARKY and funny.
I should be reading...
