This was written in 1971 and is definitely of its time, but it‘s still scarier than the slew of paranormal investigator shows and movies that have been released in the past few years.

Stephen King says this “is the scariest #Haunted house novel ever written” (which is probably why it‘s still languishing on my TBR 😆😆).

To those of you who have read it: is it really that scary?

#ScreamathonPhotoChallenge
#Screamathon

LibraryCin I didnt say in my review whether or not i was scared. I did mention a lot of violence and i rated it 3.5 stars, which for me was good. I said it started off slow, but kept building as it went. 2mo
LibraryCin I will add the violence toward the women was sexual violence whereas against men was physical violence. 2mo
saresmoore The cover is too scary for my taste. 🙀 2mo

I enjoyed reading this book for its lack of depth and the general fun ride. I can see why Richard Matheson has inspired so many other horror writers over the years, as the imagery and descriptions are interesting for the time it was written. Short, enjoyable, and easy to read.

⭐⭐⭐✨
Your classic haunted house novel. I liked the overall story but hated the women characters. They were basically liabilities. Hell House is fairly, sexually graphic so if you have problems with that, I probably wouldn't recommend it. Also, a little disappointed in the ending. It fell flat to me.

Not sure that this book holds up that well. The main ghost story holds up, but the characters are terrible. Dr. Lionel Barrett was so condescending. His wife was so weak and ineffectual. It‘s hard to care what happens to them.

Finished this a while ago but forgot to post 🙈 Overall I really enjoyed this one! Easy to read and the story was interesting. That being said the heavy sexual nature wasn‘t something I was expecting and felt a bit let down by it. In the sense that it was all the author could do to make it creepy was the feeling I got from it. Not a fan of what happened to a certain character and the ultimate resolution was a bit anticlimactic ⬇️

RainyDayReading But I still enjoyed reading it. Overall I‘d say 3.5 🌟 for this one. Just wish the sexual content wasn‘t as heavy handed as it was. 13mo

This was a reread/relisten for me. I didn't enjoy it as much as I did five years ago. It's a good read if you're interested in the history of the genre but a bit problematic. And certainly not spooky by today's standards.

Very good, slow burning book. I bought it with high expectations after seeing it recommended on /r/horrorlit but soon lowered them after seeing some reviews about it. Not quite sure why the negative reviews focused on the only spooky thing being sodomy, which was mentioned in passing in the history of the house. Tons of twists and turns and now I'm looking to watch the movie based on the book "The Legend of Hell House". 4/5 Skulls #horror

This definitely had a vibe going on that reminded me of “The Haunting of Hill House” by Shirley Jackson. I would definitely say that I liked “The Haunting” better, but this was also good. I feel like here was a lot of shock value and gore, almost if The Haunting was mixed with The Exorcist. But, it was definitely scary and made me want to sleep with the lights on!

This was a great book by a well-known horror writer. The only other book I have read my Matheson is I Am Legend, and I liked this one much more. As I have heard many others say, I appreciated the intelligent vocabulary in this novel. The story was scary and led to a satisfying ending. If you don‘t like bad language and/or sexual situations, you should avoid this book. One final thing, the main character, Dr. Barrett, is a condescending jerk.

I just read Hell House last year. It creeped me out! That was a believable ghost story (for the most part). Realistically scary!
At twelve I couldn't finish the Shining. I'm hoping to try again.

I still can't walk by a sewer grate thanks to King.

#Day21 of the #SpookyOctober #HalloweenCountdown #FrightFest #BookPhotoChallenge! Today's frightful pick is "Hell House" by Richard Matheson. An epic haunted house tale. It gets nasty, so brace yourself! ?

Let's see yours! Don't forget to tag me so I can see it! ?????☠️⚰️??

IndyHannaJones Please let me know what you think of this book. Because...I had strong feelings about it.... 3y
BookBabe @Hyaeger Yeah, me too. That's why I didn't mark it as a "Pick." The story is great, it was creepy and spooky and wasn't entirely predictable. But it also had a lot of sexual torture, which I found revolting. ? What did you think of it? 3y
IndyHannaJones @BookBabe well I'm going to honest: I loathed it. Primarily because of their treatment of the female characters. I think the author thinks that all women deep down inside want to touch other women's boobies. And the dr's wife, whose name I don't remember, was so weak and a victim until she suddenly became a sexual deviant. And Florence was smart and cool, but the males were constantly like 'shut up, you dumb broad. Your ovaries must be acting up' 3y
BookBabe @Hyaeger Wait a minute...you mean deep down inside all women don't want to touch each other's beauteous bosoms??! 😜 Yes, the males' treatment of Florence irritated me too. The book is definitely degrading to women, and that's gross. The writer seems very obsessed with sex. The book is riddled with depravity, which I found to be a major turnoff. The writing is eloquent though. 3y

Then the big twist is that the bad guy is actually the bad guy and he was actually really short.The. one of the male characters gives this inspiring speech about how it was all of them working together that solved the house. Actually it was just him because the one woman was too busy getting sexually assaulted, the other one was repressing her lesbian desires, and the doctor was too busy talking about how the one woman was an idiot and science.

The creepiness factor of this book seem to revolve around sexually assaulting the two female characters. Both females were made to be insipid characters that the men of the book couldn't take seriously. One was the wife of the doctor character. She was mostly referred to 'as his wife' then suddenly she might've been a lesbian(?). These two women got naked so many freaking times. We get it. OK this is actually going to have to be a three-part rant

This is going to take two posts to explain. The premise of this book is so good. You start reading it and you're like this is going somewhere good. The background of the house is really creepy and depraved. But then it just goes down this really weird path of trying to explain paranormal activity with weird science and and suddenly at some point everybody is really shocked that the person that was evil and owned the house was the one hunting it...

blurb
IndyHannaJones
Hell House | Richard Matheson

I'm pretty sure the sentence "she unhooked her bra" has happened 43,000 times in this book. Why does Richard keep making these women get naked and touch their breasts? Stop it.

brooklynreads Puke. 3y
IndyHannaJones Maybe because it's from the early 1970s but I was not feeling a lot of girl power in this one. I was feeling a lot of 'sexual assault makes a great story'. And 'all broads really want to touch each other's boobies'. Also there's a ghost I guess? 3y
BookBabe Ughhh, right??? Exactly—the constant bosom reveals and women getting naked annoyed the hell out of me. 3y
