A remarkably well written book. The subject matter definitely sheds light on a disturbingly dark time in U.S. history. I couldn‘t wrap my mind around some of the more horrific bits. I‘m still processing. Cora certainly had an indomitable spirit. It won the Pulitzer Prize for good reason.

This may be the one #Nonfiction #historical book that I'm adding to my #TBR stack that I am most excited about. I've heard so many good things about it! A friend gave it to me because it was "too boring". Challenge Accepted!

juls29 I read this for history class in college and found it fascinating. Hope you enjoy it! (edited) 2mo
Vivlio_Gnosi Thanks, @juls29 ! I plan to. Do you remember how long it took you to finish? 2mo
juls29 @Vivlio_Gnosi we read it during the whole semester of a class. I didn‘t try to read ahead or anything. It‘s a fairly big book so I‘d say if I was reading it for fun it would take a couple weeks or so. 2mo

Adding this #Nonfiction #medical book to my #TBR stack. I'm excited to read Mukherjee's follow up to his wildly successful #EmperorofAllMaladies.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Truly worth the #PulitzerPrize.
An absolute thrill to read. Mukherjee does an excellent job of taking such a complex and technical subject and bring it to a level that the average reader can understand.
This book is perfect if you're trying to get a better understanding of what cancer is and why we haven't discovered a cure yet.

The Fixer: A Novel | Bernard Malamud

“There‘s something cursed, it seems to me, about a country where men have owned other men as property. The stink of that corruption never escapes the soul, and it is the stink of future evil.” 😞

The setting of this novel is Kiev, 1911 but the story is relevant today. #nationalbookaward #pulitzerprize

The Stone Diaries | Carol Shields

⭐️⭐️⭐️ I liked that this novel the follows the life of 1 character, Daisy Goodwill, through her birth, childhood, marriage, widowhood, decline, and death. But the last 2-2.5 chapters didn‘t feel in keeping with her character through the earlier parts of the book. I can, though, see how it won prizes. It feels different, with the “plot” being a fictional life.

Lcsmcat This was the first Shields I read, and it sold me on her. I‘m reading one of hers right now: 13mo
DreesReads @Lcsmcat I read Unless earlier this year, and preferred that one. Though they are quite different—other than the writing style. Both felt slow to me, or maybe calm is a better word? 13mo
DreesReads It took me a while, both times, to settle in to the pace. And then I enjoyed it. It didn‘t surprise me the second time. 13mo
Lcsmcat @AudreyMorris I liked Unless too. Also A Celibate Season, which she co-wrote with Blanche Howard, is amazing! 13mo
