This "guide" is an amusing read, but any round-up that leaves out Tilney and Wentworth is outright negligent. Points for where they rank Bingley, though! #PemberLittens #TeamTilney

I read a little bit ahead and finished the book yesterday, but I collected some memes that went unused and thought I might share a few. I loved this one; Dev Patel would be an excellent Tilney! 😍 #PemberLittens #TeamTilney

BookmarkTavern I need this adaptation rather desperately now! 🤩🤩 3y
Andrea313 @ozma.of.oz Right?! Why aren't they making it happen, like, yesterday? 3y

MoonWitch94 Okay, so when I read that I absolutely was thrown! And ever since I‘ve struggled to see him as white. Anyone know what her description was describing? (As in: was Henry just a deeper shade of white? Or was he literally supposed to be a POC???? I figure not so much, but I‘m intrigued) 3y
MoonWitch94 And agreed @ozma.of.oz I NEED that adaptation! 3y
batsy @ozma.of.oz Yes! 😍 3y
Andrea313 @MoonWitch94 I would love if any Austen/regency a would weigh in! I know that Austen describes Marianne in A&S as being "very brown", and that it's common in England to say someone looks "very brown" instead of "very tan". So I always assumed she meant that Marianne (and Henry, in this case) tanned easily and spent time outdoors. I MUCH prefer imagining a diverse cast of characters, however, and Dev Patel might always be Tilney in my mind! 3y
Andrea313 @MoonWitch94 Also, we know that Austen created a character who is a POC in Sanditon: "Miss Lambe, a young West Indian of large fortune." Knowing this makes her other descriptions, such as Henry Crawford being "absolutely plain, black and plain", and many references to brown skin, seem a little more intentional to me! Thoughts, #PemberLittens? 3y
MoonWitch94 @Andrea313 I assumed it was really referencing skin being tanned, but I didn‘t want to just blindly think so. I think your thoughts sound pretty spot on, though. 3y
Andrea313 @MoonWitch94 I love imagining a more diverse world, though, and now all I want is Austen adaptations that reflect that! After re-reading P&P most recently, I got stuck on a description of Georgiana Darcy being "on a larger scale than Elizabeth" and "womanly" and now I want to see a plus-size Georgiana. And of course, Henry Tilney as a person of color. I'll just be over here, waiting for all of these new movie adaptations, kthx... 3y
sprainedbrain Oooooh Dev would be a great Tilney! 😍 3y
MoonWitch94 @Andrea313 YES to that! 😍 3y

We see Tilney's kindness on display in this chapter like never before. He doesn't make Catherine feel bad or embarrassed about her mistaken assumptions and dramatic behavior- he shows "generosity and nobleness of conduct." And when she receives bad news from her brother, he is genuinely empathetic and comforting. This article sums it up; I'm #TeamTilney!

sprainedbrain As much as I adore Captain Wentworth and drool over Darcy, I think this is accurate. Henry for the win! 3y

#PemberLittens catch up!

Ch 14: Catherine successfully managed her walk with the Tilneys, during which they discussed novels, history, education, etc and Henry was pleasantly sassy. Jane makes all sorts of social commentary in this chapter, and I am here for it. Catherine is invited to dinner with the Tilneys, and finds out that the (bunch of jerks) Thorpe party went for their drive without her after all.

So many great lines in this chapter!

mabell I love how comfortable Catherine and Henry are from the get-go. Their conversations are so much fun! And apparently I missed the “nice” memo, too! 3y
mollyrotondo So the fact that I found the most interesting in this chapter was that authors of histories made up speeches of famous figures up until the 19th century when it finally became frowned upon. How interesting that speeches were completed fabricated in a historical text! This Note was in the back of my edition. 3y
Clare-Dragonfly This meme is the best and totally captures why Henry is my favorite Austen hero 😍 3y
Clare-Dragonfly @mollyrotondo Since your edition has notes, I wonder if it explains which author Austen refers to as having shown that men like stupid women? 3y
MoonWitch94 Such a great chapter! 3y
mollyrotondo @Clare-Dragonfly my book says she is referring to author Frances Burney‘s Camilla. 3y
mollyrotondo @Clare-Dragonfly you‘re welcome! 😁 3y

That moment when I fall head over heels in love with Henry Tilney. One of my absolute favorite chapters in all of Austen. I treasure my necklace I bought at the Jane Austen House Museum a few years ago. 🥰
