#Pemberlittens! Voting has closed and…

Our winner for a book by Jane is Northanger Abbey.

I saw suggestions that we should read Northanger in October. Please comment if you‘re in favor of waiting to start a chapter-a-day buddy read on October 1 (or no!) My copy has 31 chapters so that should have us finishing the spookiest of Austen‘s work (lol) on Halloween. This is a favorite, and I will happily lead but please comment if you want to.😉

I‘ve been working my way through Austen‘s works on audiobook again this summer while my spouse and I work on a headboard. Lately I‘m finding I am picking them based on the antagonist. I love Northanger; It does such a good job of capturing that feeling of uncertainty when you are young and learning not to displace your own judgement in favor of others. Also, I think “listening to Jane Austen while woodworking” is my new favorite gender.

Just finished this and really enjoyed the whole book.
Catherine is a great lead, and her observations on friends were spot on.
Adored the setting of Bath as I coujd imagine all of it so easily. Can't wait for the guided book club around the novel 😍😊

Northanger Abbey felt so slow for some reason, as if in the first 15 chapters nothing interesting happened. Catherine was an interesting main character because she‘s just like me fr, the way she wrote a whole fanfic on her head and then was extremely disappointed when she realized life is just boring, girl me too.

This was my first Austen. I enjoyed it and definitely laughed at some parts. Catherine is sweet, honest and innocent, if a bit clueless. Henry is funny and kind and the Thorpes are the worst.

At the begining, i wasn‘t impressed by Catherine Morland. But later, i found her very decent and very typical girl of her time. She is not a decorated character. She is a heroine of her own life as much as all of us are.

Another in the Jane Austen collection narrated by Emma Thompson. Thompson‘s narration irritated me a little in the sections when Catherine‘s imagination ran away with her.
I studied this, together with many of the novels it satirises, in Gothic Fictions at uni. I do enjoy the gentle ridicule of the young heroine‘s gothic imaginings and her naivety of social conventions in Elizabethan England. She is refreshingly frank.

This one is more bold and bawdy than some of her more-renowned offerings. While it hits a lot of the same notes as your Emmas and your Pride And Prejudices, it hits them a lot harder, and holds the pedal down for good measure. I think I preferred the subtlety of some of Austen‘s later work, but there‘s something to be said for the explicit humour of Northanger Abbey. The Jane Austen Novels Ranked
Interesting article: https://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/industry-news/tip-sheet/article/520...

Read the article and then tell me how you would rank them.
This is way harder than I thought it would be.

#PemberLittens

suvata My ranking: 1. Pride and Prejudice 2. Northanger Abbey 3. Emma 4. Persuasion 5. Mansfield Park 6. Sense and Sensibility 11mo
Ruthiella Interesting see Northanger Abbey both in the article and in your list ranked so high. 🤔 When I later read The Mysteries of Udolfo, I could definitely see what Austen was parodying. 😂 My list is 1. Pride & Prejudice,
2. Emma, 3. Persuasion, 4. Sense & Sensibility , 5. Northanger Abbey, and 6. Mansfield Park.
(edited) 11mo
SamAnne I think my ranking would change on a daily, weekly basis.😀😀😀. Probably my two favorite are Persuasion and Emma. At least this week. 11mo

suvata @Ruthiella I think I just really appreciated the poke at Gothic novels. Other than that our lists are fairly similar. But I also agree with @SamAnne that my list would probably change weekly or at least monthly. LOL 11mo
staci.reads I know my rankings have changed during the years. After this latest read-through with the Pemberlittens, I would say 1- Pride and Prejudice, 2-Emma, 3- Persuasion, 4-Northanger Abbey, 5-Mansfield Park, 6-Sense and Sensibility. But I agree with the author of the article...it's like ranking chocolate 🙂 11mo
suvata @staci.reads Yeah, I loved the chocolate comparison. 11mo

This book made me laugh so much. The banter and Catherine‘s internal monologue is just so funny. I also really enjoyed the tension between Catherine and some of the friends she meets in Bath. Not everyone is good and I always like having characters I can roll my eyes at when I‘m reading. There‘s also a little bit of a mystery and unfolds a little over halfway through and that was fun to read about.

So contrary to what this photo might suggest, this post is actually about Northanger Abbey (I just had to show you the cover of Emma - my next read! - bc it's LOVELY).

I really enjoyed Northanger - it was like 19thC YA to me and Catherine is one of my favourite Austen heroines. I just found her so loveable (if a little naive)😂 Great for if you want something that's simple, light-hearted and fun🙌

@wideeyedreader and I had to get our dresses for my son‘s wedding altered today. 2nd & Charles is right next door to David‘s Bridal. We couldn‘t NOT go! 😂I‘ve never read anything by Austen and thought this might be a good one to start with. #bookhaul #pennyperpage

LiteraryinLawrence So I‘m a big Austen fan and would never discourage someone from reading her. Northanger Abbey happens to be the one of her books that isn‘t like the others, at least in my opinion. It‘s a spoof on a gothic novel, so she‘s taking a lot of the tropes of her contemporaries and then sort of poking fun of them. It‘s a great book but has a very different tone to her others. If I had to recommend a starting place, I‘d say Sense and Sensibility or P&P! 1y
AmyK1 @LiteraryinLititz Thanks for the advice! Who knows when I‘ll actually get to this one but maybe I‘ll get one of the others from the library sometime soon. 1y

Compared to some of her other more famous works , Northanger Abbey is something completely different in style , likely because it was one of her first, though not published first . Her satire of her gothic contemparies is entertaining and demonstrates the humour we see throughout her other books. Miss Austen never disappoints.

I love gothic horror, but everything deserves to be made fun of occasionally and when it comes to poking fun in a way that isn't always very gentle, Jane Austen is the one for me.

I finally finished it! I don't think that there was anything wrong with this book. But I also didn't connect with it the same way I have with some of Austen's other works. It might even have just been the wrong book at the wrong time. I'm not sure, but I found it pretty forgettable.

I had hoped to read more Northanger-related books this month, but I found that nothing could compare to Austen's original! This one is incredibly hard to adapt; I DNF'd a couple in addition to the ones pictured here. #PemberLittens, did you find a particularly enjoyable adaptation this month?
