Riveted_Reader_Melissa I enjoyed this one, and usually Rincewind isn‘t my favorite, but the aging Barbarians who wanted to go out with a bang, were great. 3y

khooliha I like how much this was a throwback to early Discworld stuff, how it gave those early books a proper, thoughtful goodbye. I do find myself wishing it were longer, just because there were some character crossovers I really enjoyed the bits we got and wanted more of (specifically Ponder & Vetinari and Rincewind & Carrot). 3y
GingerAntics I liked the ambiguous ending, where the old barbarians are dead, but they‘re not letting that stop them from riding on. As a Da Vinci groupie, I loved the Discworld version of him. Of course Ook stole the show a bit there, and I love him all the more for it. 3y
DrexEdit I really enjoyed the illustrations in this. I didn't think I would, but I found them to be close enough to my mental pictures that they didn't detract. And some were absolutely marvelous! I want a poster of that swamp dragon spread! I also enjoyed the character cross-overs in this and I love any book with Carrot or the Librarian. 💜 3y
DrexEdit @khooliha you've got me a bit worried. This is my first time through the discworld books. Do they change in tone going forward? Your comment about a proper, thoughtful goodbye feels like foreshadowing to me. 😊 3y
khooliha @DrexEdit Oh, no! The tone has been changing, organically I think, all along. It's just shifted away from the direct fantasy parody that produced Cohen and the gods basically playing D&D. I think Pratchett knows full well that the first couple books were a wild, wooly land, but I think a book like The Last Hero respects that and has affection for it. 3y
khooliha @DrexEdit At least, that's how it feels to me. A number of our more recent reads (like Last Continent and Carpe Jugulum) feel a bit like endings. A focus shifting, maybe. There's still tons of great stuff coming though! 3y
DrexEdit @khooliha Excellent! I do agree that the tone has been shifting all along from mostly silly to sharper satire. I see what you are saying though about recent books feeling like endings! 3y
khooliha @DrexEdit I do like that they're sort of... open endings. I feel like I remember Pratchett mentioning life going on when people aren't looking at the Disc, so these characters just get to keep on going, we're just not looking at them as much anymore. 3y
Gezemice @DrexEdit I loved the illustrations, too, and that‘s what made it a five star for me. I agree, illustrator Paul Kidby totally nailed the characters, and the illistrations were an integral part of the story. I spent quite a bit of time looking at the tiny pictures in the frames in the beginning and the end... they are hilarious! And the Leonard illustrations are brilliant. The gnarly heroes are brilliant. Some of those spreads are gorgeous. 3y
Gezemice @GingerAntics @kooliha @DrexEdit I agree about the endings! Love that they just go on, heroes are not bothered by being dead. Also agree on that the tone is becoming more refined and thoughtful, a trend through Discworld... and some of the best are still to come, like Thud! and Nightwatch. 3y
DrexEdit @Gezemice Paul Kirby was definitely a good choice for Terry Pratchett. So much care and thought went into the pictures! Makes me wish more of the books had illustrated editions. 3y
Gezemice @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Rincewind was understated in this one, not the main character. As part of a cast he works well. He was a good comic sidekick to the idealistic Leonard and the chivalrous Carrot. And we know that he always stumbles onto something when the chances are a million to one (i.e. nine out of ten). 3y
Gezemice @DrexEdit Yes! This is one of the few I do not own yet (it was from the library) but I think I will have to get it just to look through those gorgeous spreads. And I loved that it was so big that the impact of the illustrations really came through. Much bigger than you average graphic novel. (edited) 3y
GingerAntics @Gezemice I can‘t wait for Nightwatch! I adored the illustrations as well. (edited) 3y
gossamerchild I'm a bit late to this discussion, but I loved this one! I missed this book on my initial foray into Discworld, and I'm glad to have the chance to find out again. The illustrations are FANTASTIC! I loved everything about this one 🤩 3y

"The place where the story happened was a world on the back of four elephants perched on the shell of a giant turtle. That's the advantage of space. It's big enough to hold practically anything, and so, eventually, it does."

#20in4 #readathon @Andrew65

I'm not sure which book to start with. Chilling Effect is calling my name, but so is #TheLastHero for #OokBOokClub. What's definitely not calling is Any Human Heart for #Gladstonerds. 😬

Andrew65 Good luck whichever one you choose. I always struggle choosing books to read. 3y

Pickpick

I think this might actually be my favourite Pratchett book. I‘m a huge Da Vinci groupie, so Leonard, his drawings and his backward writing were awesome. The illustrations were perfect. Ook was fun to have along for the ride.
