This is a mixed bag for me. I really loved so much of this—the characters were vivid and the 90s Florida setting was palpable. I was right there in CC‘s shoes as she navigated growing up in a tumultuous household. #dysfunctionalfamily lovers take notice! However! Parts of this fell apart and there was little to no ending. I even reread sections to make sure I wasn‘t missing anything. Nope, just several threads never mentioned again 🤷‍♀️

BarbaraBB That is weird! 4w

The Latecomer | Jean Hanff Korelitz

The Latecomer is one of those #dysfunctionalfamily reads with few (maybe 2 out of the bunch) likable characters. I had the physical book, but mostly listened for Julia Whelan‘s expert narration on the audio which I recommend. A set of triplets (Brooklyn, Jewish, wealthy) grow up chaffing against each other until tragedy strikes and things take a turn right at the cusp of adulthood. The book switches gear and we get to know “the latecomer”. Pick!

I absolutely loved this - it has everything a “dysfunctional family fiction” fan like me craves! The setting was perfect - both location-wise (Cape Cod) and political climate-wise (I‘ll never forget the election of 2016). Flawed characters, some way more so than others, found family, so many secrets. I‘ll be thinking about this one for a while.

CBee This was my first read from your fab #ALSpine list, Julie! Thank you ♥️ @RebelReader @monalyisha 3mo
RebelReader @CBee I‘m a dysfunctional fiction family fan too! So glad you loved it! 3mo

CBee @RebelReader I‘m still considering starting a petition or something to make “dysfunctional family fiction” it‘s own genre….. 😂😂😂 3mo
CBee @kspenmoll I saw your review! And you‘ve spent so much time at Cape Cod - sounds lovely ♥️ 3mo
RebelReader @CBee I‘d sign it! 🤣 3mo
Chelsea.Poole It could at least be a hashtag?? #dysfunctionalfamily —one I‘d gladly follow 😊 3mo
Amiable Sounds fabulous—stacking! 3mo
CBee @Chelsea.Poole I think we should start using that hashtag 😂 @RebelReader You too, @AmyG 😁 (edited) 3mo
kspenmoll I loved this too for similar reasons! 3mo
kspenmoll @CBee I have been blessed to have spent so much time there. This March my 3 sisters & me are spending a weekend together there. My oldest sister bought my parents house from us- consequently we are able to get there every year. 3mo
CBee @kspenmoll that sounds wonderful ♥️ 3mo

Bookwormjillk I‘m finding I like this book better if I treat each chapter as a separate story and don‘t look for any theme or connection. Like they‘re loosely related, but all just separate examples of the K family being weird or acting up. (edited) 3mo

5feet.of.fury Heyyy on to book 3 though, maybe there will be more to it in this section than Fyodor being a buffoon 3mo
Cuilin @Bookwormjillk I like that idea. 3mo
Bookwormjillk @5feet.of.fury 🤞 3mo
Deblovestoread @Bookwormjillk I like the way you think! Brilliant 🥰 3mo
mcctrish @Bookwormjillk so far it‘s more like all the ways #FyodorKaramazovismad but Ivan shoving poor #notvonsohn out of the coach was not an example of being on an even keel 🤯 3mo
currentlyreadinginCO I keep thinking that this is the chapter where I'm going to understand where this is going 3mo
currentlyreadinginCO ... but hey, maybe that's part 3? 😅 3mo
TheBookHippie Every book I‘m reading they are eating strawberries… I‘ve never reread so much in my life 😂. I‘m looking at it like @Bookwormjillk all short stories or stream of thought journal 😂🤷🏻‍♀️ 3mo
KAO That works for me, @Bookwormjillk ! I am hanging on by a thread but just trying to treat each chapter as its own little subplot—so far apropos of nothing that I can pin down yet. 3mo

An espresso martini and a good societal drama - Yes, please! One thing I have learned over the past few years is that going to a bar or restaurant by myself to read is absolutely freeing. Coffee shops are a little different...most people go to coffee shops to read.

I adored this book. It was funny and quirky and just when I thought the worst had come for poor Penny, I turned the page and her story got more outrageous. It was a fun read overall.

I know this one was too aggressively quirky for some reviewers, but it hit me just right at the time I was reading it. I felt so much kinship with the MC, her loneliness and her struggles to communicate. My pick for August.

Oh my goodness 💔 this book 😭

I recommend going into this one cold, guys. I was glad to know very little about it going in, as it‘s a very difficult book to categorize and the publisher‘s blurb seems to be setting wrong expectations. For instance, “the Dog of the North” is a van, but this is NOT a “road trip story”.

All I‘ll say is it‘s an emotional journey for the MC, Penny Rush, who is quietly neurodivergent and extremely lonely.

CSeydel Penny Rush may be my favorite protagonist since Daniel Pecan Cambridge (The Pleasure of My Company, 2004). I could so relate to Penny‘s struggles to communicate, her longing to understand and to be understood, and her frustration at constantly being just slightly out of sync with all the communication happening around her. 9mo
CSeydel The plot is hilarious and heartbreaking, and there are layers of literary references and symbolism. Wacky, poignant, and deeply moving. 9mo

Ruthiella Have you tried her other book? I DNFed because it was too cute for me (at least by the 50 page mark) 9mo
jlhammar Wonderful review! Glad to see some love for this book. I thought it was great. 9mo
CSeydel @Itchyfeetreader thank you! 8mo
CSeydel @jlhammar I think it was a tricky book to market. I‘ve been hearing a lot of disappointment around it and I think it‘s because people are expecting it to be something else. 8mo
CSeydel @Ruthiella No, this is the first one I‘ve read of hers! 8mo

#womensprizelonglist

A bit of a disappointment to have this be my last 2023 long list read. It was fine but not memorable and compared to the other books on the list not nearly as creative or well crafted - though not as bad as Pod!
It felt as if the author was trying too hard to find cute silly ideas to bring in, and overall the atmosphere made me feel a bit grimy, but nowhere near as visceral as Children of Paradise.

Penny is at loose ends when her husband leaves her and her whole life blows up. She ends up following the wind a bit in a madcap adventure involving some very interesting people. This is whimsical and funny to balance the sad parts, but it‘s also a bit uneven in the writing, starting oddly flat and not so much ending as just stopping. Low pick for me.

squirrelbrain I didn‘t love this one either - I‘m not sure what it was trying to be or say. (edited) 11mo
Megabooks I was curious about this but my library doesn‘t have it. I‘ll probably skip if it‘s not an enthusiastic pick for you or @squirrelbrain 🤷🏻‍♀️ 11mo
Hooked_on_books @Megabooks I feel like if this had been reworked, it could‘ve been great. But instead it‘s a bit of a missed opportunity. You‘re not missing out by skipping it. 11mo
