The Martian
The Martian: A Novel | Andy Weir
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that hes aliveand even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first. But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skillsand a relentless, dogged refusal to quithe steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

“LOG ENTRY: SOL 37

I am fucked, and I‘m gonna die!
Okay, calm down. I‘m sure I can get around this.”

This story in a nutshell. I am just about halfway through and I haven‘t laughed this much in ages. Like genuine laugh out loud (even when I‘m reading on the train). I loved the movie, but man this book is FUNNY. So glad I picked it up to read.

I‘ve been meaning to read this since watching the film as it had such good reviews. I think it missed the mark for me a little, maybe just a little too much in depth scientific information. If it wasn‘t for the little breaks of humour throughout I definitely would have given up on it.

It was a little scary at times, sure, and very interesting, but most of the time I found it just plain funny. Watney was a fantastic narrator, and had me laughing out loud on several occasions. He‘s so likeable that Australian scientists have actually – like, in real life – named a new species of bush tomato after him (Solanum Watneyi). I‘m not even kidding. I‘m desperate to finish this, truly I am, but for the first time in probably 6 months I picked up my knitting tonight. So instead of reading, I am knitting a lace shawl and watching Real Detective. But I‘ll get to The Martian, I swear. I love the movie so much that there is no way I can read Mark Watney and not hear Matt Damon 🥔

julesG Lace knitting! 😍 If the bug bites, do it. I have such moments, too. Also, the audiobook is quite good. I knit a (not so much lace) shawl along to it. 6mo

I really enjoyed this book. And Andy Weird did an excellent job on explaining the scientific terms and NASA terms, making me the dummy in that area, understand what is going on.
And Mark Watney is such a fun, loving smart ass character, I rooted for his survival.

I was pleasantly surprised how funny this book was. Overall, I thought the story was well-done. Good character development and good pacing makes a solid sci-fi novel. My biggest issue with the book was the over-explaining of the science and the in-depth math. Too much math!!!

First book of #maymadness!!! Week 1—book to movie adaptation
And 1st book for #MayScavengerHunt — (1) made into a movie & (2) over 300 pgs.

TheReadingMermaid NICE!!!!! 👍😃👍 7mo

I started this book before, but didn‘t finish. I should‘ve waited till I finished the book, before I watched the movie. It‘s been a while so I chose to start from the beginning. I‘m glad I did.
The book is better than the movie in almost every way. The movies ending is much more detailed about what happens after the daring rescue attempt. It makes the books ending feel a little incomplete. I added my favorite quote to the cover. 😂

I saw the movie when it first came out, so a bit out of my usual order. But even so, this was really good and it had been long enough so that the details were fuzzy in my memory. I loved Watney's quirky sense of humor and how complicated science-y stuff is broken down into easily digestible lingo 👩🏼‍🚀🌌

Cgetscheeky Yes! I loved this book! When I taught 5th grade, one of my students actually recommended it to me. He gave me a Barnes and Noble gift card at the end of the year so I went and bought it. Probably one of my favorite books that isn‘t a romance 😁 8mo
