Mademoiselle Chanel
Mademoiselle Chanel: A Novel | C. W. Gortner
She revolutionized fashion and built an international empire . . . all on her own termsBorn into rural poverty, Gabrielle Chanel and her sisters are sent to a convent orphanage after their mother's death. The nuns of the order nurture Gabrielle's exceptional sewing skills, a talent that would propel the willful young woman into a life far removed from the drudgery of her childhood.Burning with ambition, the petite brunette transforms herself into Coco, by day a hard-working seamstress and by night a singer in a nightclub, where her incandescence draws in a wealthy gentleman who becomes the love of her life. She immerses herself in his world of money and luxury, discovering a freedom that sparks her creativity. But it is only when her lover takes her to Paris that Coco discovers her destiny. Rejecting the frilly, corseted silhouette of the past, Coco's sleek, minimalist styles reflect the youthful ease and confidence of the 1920s modern woman. As her reputation spreads, her couture business explodes, taking her into rarefied circles of society and bohemian salons. But her fame and fortune cannot save her from heartbreak as the years pass. And when Paris falls to the Nazis, Coco is forced to make choices that will haunt her always. An enthralling novel about an entirely self-made woman, Mademoiselle Chanel tells the true story of Coco Chanel's extraordinary ambition, passion, and artistic vision.

Whilst I felt I never fully understood Coco Chanel or some of her motives, I thoroughly enjoyed what is a moving story of childhood poverty, sheer determination and, of course, real style. I loved the part Paris played in the story along with a whole host of other glamorous friends and elegant locations. I was also intrigued by her entanglement with the Nazis during WWII which I knew little about. Overall a great, intriguing read.

Coco Chanel‘s humble and poor beginnings helped to define the woman she became. She was (and her house still is)an icon of fashion. The little black dress is because of her. While I didn‘t care much for the person portrayed in this book, I do admire her spunk and creativity. This is a good read.

I‘m interested to read this. I‘d read in another book that Coco Chanel may have been a Nazi sympathizer. I‘m hoping not, but we shall see. Her creative mind in couture is one of the finest.

thegirlwiththelibrarybag I‘ve read that too. It‘s not great - but a lot of people at that time were. We have the benefit of time and the fuller picture of what was going on. 10mo
Crazeedi This was a really good book. She was not really a sympathizer from my viewpoint, but she did what she had to for chanel to survive. I recommend this book 10mo

This was a fascinating read! I learned so much about Coco, she was quite a woman. While I didn‘t love every paragraph in this book (some bedroom details could‘ve been omitted and the plot wouldn‘t have suffered. -Sigh- oh well, to each their own), I would still definitely give it four stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I thoroughly enjoyed immersing myself in the world of Coco Chanel. A remarkable lady, and a testament to her that, years later, her name remains associated with simple, sophisticated style.

I knew nothing about Coco Chanel‘s life prior reading this book, and if I‘m honest I didn‘t really care to learn about it. But CW. Gortner is a favourite author so I bought the book anyway. Gortner does a great job bringing Chanel to life, and made me realize just how hard she had to work to achieve her success.

Thanks for suggesting the buddy read @Cinfhen otherwise the book likely would have remained unread for years!

LibraryCin Interesting. I noticed you add the book earlier on, so took a look at who it was about, then decided against it. 2y
Cinfhen Somehow I missed this post!!! I enjoyed learning more about the time in history then actually about her. Thanks for joining me!!! I agree, if it wasn‘t for you I may not have gotten to this book for a few more years!!! 2y

A true rags to riches tale, Gabrielle Chanel rose from the humblest of beginnings. Author did a great job creating a story behind the iconic brand. Chanel was an innovator and somewhat of an outsider full of doubts and insecurities but her strong will and stubbornness served her well. I especially enjoyed the historical aspects to the book, as Chanel lived through both World Wars. My curiosity involving her Nazi ties was fully addressed 👇🏼

Cinfhen And I believe, she did what she did in order to survive. 2y

Cinfhen Thanks @TrishB @Melissa_J I definitely felt better knowing that Chanel wasn‘t an Anti-Semite although she did make some questionable choices. It‘s hard to judge how anyone would have behaved during wartime so I‘m giving her a free pass💖looking forward to reading your review, Melissa 2y
