The Hotel on Place Vendome
The Hotel on Place Vendome: Life, Death, and Betrayal at the Hotel Ritz in Paris | Tilar J. Mazzeo
16 posts | 11 read | 72 to read
Set against the backdrop of the Nazi occupation of World War II, The Htel on Place Vendme is the captivating history of Pariss world-famous Htel Ritza breathtaking tale of glamour, opulence, and celebrity; dangerous liaisons, espionage, and resistancefrom Tilar J. Mazzeo, the New York Times bestselling author of The Widow Clicquot and The Secret of Chanel No. 5 When France fell to the Germans in June 1940, the legendary Htel Ritz on the Place Vendmean icon of Paris frequented by film stars and celebrity writers, American heiresses and risqu flappers, playboys, and princeswas the only luxury hotel of its kind allowed in the occupied city by order of Adolf Hitler. Tilar J. Mazzeo traces the history of this cultural landmark from its opening in fin de sicle Paris. At its center, The Hotel on Place Vendme is an extraordinary chronicle of life at the Ritz during wartime, when the Htel was simultaneously headquarters to the highest-ranking German officers, such as Reichsmarshal Hermann Gring, and home to exclusive patrons, including Coco Chanel. Mazzeo takes us into the grand palaces suites, bars, dining rooms, and wine cellars, revealing a hotbed of illicit affairs and deadly intrigue, as well as stunning acts of defiance and treachery. Rich in detail, illustrated with black-and-white photos, The Hotel on Place Vendme is a remarkable look at this extraordinary crucible where the future of post-war Franceand all of post-war Europewas transformed.

Tells of the start of the hotel in 1898 and the sale in 1979 to Egypt's Mohamed Al Fayed but centers mostly on the WWII years of 1941-45 and all the famous people such as; Marcel Prost, Hemingway & his wife Martha Gelhorn, Fitzgeralds, royalty, Churchill, and the German officers during the occupation of Paris. I found the book very fascinating and need to read more about the people and events involved. Recommend to those who enjoy history.

AmberWB Check out Mistress of the Ritz! 3y

EadieB @Kaila-ann @hestapleton @iread2much I am now reading the tagged book where you wanted the author to give the titles to Marcel Proust's books and Emile Zola. I use fantasticfiction.com for this purpose. Here is a link to their books:

Also a link to a book about The Dreyfus Affair that I enjoyed. Robert Harris' books are excellent:

Mehso-so

I finished my #bookspin (which also happened to my #lmpbc pick) today! I felt like the book focused more on Paris before and after WWII than the Hotel Ritz itself, I still learned a lot about a time and place that is often viewed with rose-colored glasses. Paris, like everywhere, has a messy history. I was glad to learn some of that.

TheAromaofBooks Great review!! 4y
Hestapleton @iread2much I put this in the mail this weekend and it should get to you Saturday, August 1! 4y

#WanderingJune Since The Count was spoken for I went with another #GrandHotel ~ Hotel Ritz on 15 Place Vendome. Tagged book traces the history of the iconic hotel & “takes us into the grand palace‘s suites, bars, dining rooms, and wine cellars, revealing a hotbed of illicit affairs and deadly intrigue, as well as stunning acts of defiance and treachery.” Each chapter focuses on a different “famous “ guest. Excellent read!!!!!! Images from Google

A great read! The story of the Hotel Ritz in Paris and the many artists that called it home! I had no idea it was a home for the Nazi occupation during WWII—If you love history and also enjoy interesting narrative, I encourage you to pick this up. #history #Paris

RealLifeReading Yes it's been that long huh!! The first one I did was #somethingforsept and hopefully I'll be able to make it all the way to this September. At least that's the plan! 😘 7y
Reviewsbylola Totally agree with Lillian Boxfish and Dark Matter. I still need to read Another Brooklyn. 7y
Cinfhen You have to read the Woodson, I read it in one sitting, it's under 200 pages and it's written like poetry. Words just flow and float, I would have liked a bit more but it was lovely and lyrical. 7y

If you enjoy nonfiction, appreciate old time Hollywood, are a bit of a history buff, adore Paris, like espionage & juicy gossip then this book is a MUST! Beginning in 1898 with the opening of the iconic Ritz Hotel up to the tragic death of Princess Diana in 1997 this book highlights the many infamous scandals & illicit affairs that went on at 15 Place Vendome. Each chapter begins with a photo, quote & interesting figure who called the Ritz home!

I'm interested in reading this nonfiction account of the iconic Hotel Ritz, in Paris when it was used as the headquarters for the Nazi leaders during the French occupation. It's also a fitting read for #HolocaustRememberanceDay

JoeStalksBeck I love reading about Patton making the Germans go through the camps to see all the devastation. To see what their beloved leader had done. I cry for those victims every time 7y

4/5: This book explores major events during the Second World War through the eyes of the residents of the Hôtel Ritz. The majority of these influencers were artists, movie stars, and writers, who you wouldn't expect to have such an impact on a war. If you're interested in learning about how espionage was committed with bar napkins or Coco Channel's involvement with Nazism, this is the book for you.
