It's a bit of a slow start, but once it finds its groove, it really flies. I would say this one was the most humorous of the Brodie series, the Murder Mystery theatrics made for a hilarious farce. And always happy to see Reggie and the welcome (but underutilized) return of Louise Monroe.

Thank you to @CarolynM for inspiring this year's read through of the Jackson Brodie series. It's been a pleasure to catch up and I can't wait for more!

CarolynM Glad you enjoyed😊 This one is definitely the funniest. It made me laugh a lot. 2d

I've stolen Aretha's spot in front of the fireplace for some morning reading, and she really doesn't know what to make of it.

RaeLovesToRead Awww, Aretha! I hope she got cuddles 💕💕 6d
monalyisha I did my normal thing when people post pictures that have a book in them but aren‘t OF books, where I squint and try to read the title and figure out what they‘re reading. And then I realized I didn‘t have to, duh! The book is tagged. That‘s the point of our community! God, I love Litsy. 😅 And hi, Aretha! 6d

TheKidUpstairs @RaeLovesToRead I would have happily given her cuddles, but she is VERY particular in her cuddle requirements, and this situation didn't meet her standards (probably because it wasn't 3am and she couldn't wake me up by purring DIRECTLY in my face 🤣) 6d

I made it!

After @CarolynM included this one on her #AuldLangSpine list, I made it my reading goal for the year to catch up with the Jackson Brodie series so that I could read it in its proper order. And I did it! So it's time to crack this bad boy open and dive in....

I seem to have started this series with the last book. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ Guess I'll park it for the moment and try finding the first. I cannot read a series out of order. 🙄🙄🙄

MaGoose I hate when I do that, too. I also like to read a series in order 8mo

CarolynM An extra good idea with this series, although you won‘t miss much if you start with number 2. Also, don‘t expect mysteries as such. These books are about the characters and the social commentary. 8mo
TheSpineView Agree! I must read in order. Even if the series is made up of stand alones. 8mo
TrishB Nope, can‘t do out of order! Agree with @CarolynM these are more about the characters. 8mo
Mollyanna Totally agree! Series should be read in order. 8mo
julesG @CarolynM @TrishB Thanks. Good to know. 8mo
AnnCrystal 🧐 I've recently purchased three books that were all second in their series! 😜😂 I love a good series, but really wish they would return to clearly defining that a book is a part of a series and also numbering all books in a series...📚💝. 8mo

Love Kate Atkinson, love the cover, love the title and love Jackson Brodie. This was great fun with a mix of knowing humour, Downton-vibes, and a lost-art murder-mystery crime caper (I can‘t decide if I love or hate the word caper 😆). You‘ll love to hate the Miltons, and I loved the gentleness with which Ben and Simon were treated. And of course, Jackson himself never disappoints.

sarahbarnes I want to read these at some point! Too many books too little time. 😆 9mo

Mehso-so

This was just ‘meh‘ for me.
Through much of the beginning I was bored, I suppose there was some humour there granted it was a bit eye-roll inducing for me. Maybe I‘ve just moved on from this series 🤷🏻‍♀️

TrishB I was really disappointed in this one too. 11mo
Bookish.SAM @TrishB well… at least glad to know it wasn‘t just me! It‘ve been a while since I read the others in the series so for a minute I was wondering if I just remembered them all wrong 🤣 This one just felt … different. 11mo

I love Kate Atkinson and was thrilled to see there was a new entry in her Jackson Brodie series. When Brodie is hired to find a missing painting, he enlists the help of detective Reggie Chase. The trail leads them to Burton Makepeace, the estate of an aristocratic family who've turned to hosting murder mystery themed evenings for extra cash. Wry humor and uniquely human characters make this a delightful read, as expected from this brilliant series

Ruthiella I loved this too! Big fan of Atkinson. 11mo

I really loved being back with Jackson Brodie in this latest novel, which I read in November. I love Atkinson overall and I particularly love her Jackson Brodie books. They are both melancholy and hopeful and can also make me laugh.

#12BooksOf2024 September

I‘m always abuzz with anticipation for a new Kate Atkinson, and even more so when it‘s a Jackson Brodie story. She has never disappointed me. I loved this one in September.

Rissreadswithcats I think I might read this series this year. 💛 11mo
TheKidUpstairs I haven't read any Jackson Brodie beyond Case Histories. Will that matter going into this one? Or should I catch up on the series before reading it? 11mo
Ruthiella This will be my November pick! 11mo

Andrew65 I still need to get to this. 11mo
CarolynM @TheKidUpstairs I think it could be read as a stand alone but you will definitely enjoy it more if you‘ve read the others. 11mo
TheKidUpstairs @CarolynM thank you! I think I might make it a project to catch up on the series this year before I read it. It's not a super long series, so I think I can do it! 11mo
CarolynM @Rissreads It‘s a wonderful series, but remember that the “murder mystery” is only the device for telling a story about the characters. If you expect a gripping whodunnit you‘ll be disappointed. 11mo
CarolynM @TheKidUpstairs What I just said to @Rissreads applies to you too 🙂 I think what she‘s really interested in exploring are the far reaching consequences of violence and the way the past affects the future. Plus a bit of understated social commentary. 11mo
CarolynM @Ruthiella It‘s a great book🙂 11mo
TheKidUpstairs @CarolynM I remember that with Case Histories. I really liked the more “literary“ character/societal study side to the books, rather than a traditional detective murder mystery (not that there's anything wrong with those!). I had always meant to continue the series, but never have, so this will be a good reason to get to it! 11mo
Rissreadswithcats That‘s exactly my kind of detective book. I have always been more into the people and their lives. Sold! 🤣 11mo

Loved this most recent entry in the Jackson Brodie series. It was particularly satisfying for those familiar with the entire history of our Jackson. Art theft, red herrings, undeserving heirs, and maybe murder all converge when ex-Army, ex-Police, PI Jackson is hired by a dodgy pair of siblings after their aged mother dies and a certain painting goes missing at the same time as the carer.

6th #10beforetheend book & also works for #SeriesLove2024

Jackson and Louise ❤️😢 IYKYK

“Apart from the fact that snow had already closed several roads in the far north, Scotland was a place full of unfortunate memories for him. He had nearly died there, he had lied about a double murder (no regrets), and he had met a woman he really liked, possibly loved, although the word was difficult for him to pronounce, and he had slipped away in the night without so much as a goodbye, leaving a dog in his place.”

CarolynM Yep. Just you wait… 12mo

I was SO EXCITED to get another Jackson Brodie book! I like pretty much anything Atkinson writes but this one was a welcome return to my favorite stuff—snarky dry British humor, entangled ridiculous plot lines, darkly comic morbidity, and a visit with Brodie. I giggled a lot through the last few chapters. This had a Clue whodunnit vibe that was extra fun. Just a good time.

Ruthiella So looking forward to this. But because I own it, I keep pushing it back for library books! 1y

What an absolute joy! I loved it. I loved the way it played with the tropes and conventions of fictional crime as rendered by the British and I loved the returning characters, of course, but what I loved most were all the little asides - the nods and winks at so many things real and fictional. I snort-laughed at “the Milton‘s were very much not a racist family”.

I‘ve been absent & not reading much over the last few months. Glad to be back now😊

I love Kate‘s stand-alone books as well as the ‘Todd Family‘ series, so when I saw she had a new book coming out I was excited! Then I saw it was book 6 in her wildly popular Jackson Brodie series, which I have read 0 books from. I decided to keep my library hold on it and give it a try, and I‘m glad I did! I would‘ve missed out on a great story, her amazing writing, and meeting new characters who have a backlist of books for me to read now 🤩

So nice to be back with Jackson and Reggie. I forget that Jackson Is ageing. Do hope he doesn‘t retire anytime soon. I enjoyed this adventure . Lots of words I hadn‘t seen in a long time . Some I had to look up . Good for the brain. Love that she uses these wonderful words. I got a bit bogged down in the middle but kept on and was pleased I did.

It‘s a pick, but definitely not my favourite.
Loved- Atkinson‘s writing as always, her humour and her sarcasm about the British class system is very funny. Jackson Brodie- still a great character ❤️
What I didn‘t like- country house farce, Agatha Christie style, with many interconnecting doors and weird side characters. Too busy and took ages to make any sense of overall story.
Interested to see what others think.

Ruthiella I preordered this from Blackwell‘s…should be here soon. The only question is will I get to it right away. 🤔 P.S. I read Shrines of Gaiety last month and also found it a bit too busy. Good, but not her best. (edited) 1y
Reggie So our next bookclub book is her Transcription. I hope it‘s good because we‘ve gone through some rough ones. 🤞🏼 1y
TrishB @Reggie I enjoyed Transcription! I think there are still a lot of characters though. Always interested in how the very British references translate to others so will be interested in your views! 1y

Balibee146 Oh I think I need to re read the Jackson Brodie books from the start before I get to this. I was deep in my demanding uni job when I read them and it's all a bit of a blur now lol 1y

Jeg Well said. You have put into words what I thought. Just finished it. 1y
TrishB @Jeg such a disappointment! 1y
CarolynM Oh, I wasn‘t disappointed at all. I thought she was having fun with the silliness of all those British Murder Mysteries. It made me laugh a lot. 1y
