Nobody knew how old the woods were, or how big. The outside had been mapped and measured but once you were in there it seemed to stretch much further... Chloe has been planning her dream wedding for months - well, perhaps since she was a little girl. And now she has the perfect venue, Small Angels, a picturesque little church right up against the edge of Mockbeggar Woods, in the village her husband-to-be grew up in. So why are the villagers telling her such unsettling stories about the place? Why is she beginning to see, hear, and even smell things that couldn't possibly be real? Kate hasn't been back to the village since the death of a childhood friend ten years ago. As a teenager she would flee the soundtrack of her parents' constant fighting for the notorious Blanch Farm, where the four Gonne sisters lived with their strict grandparents and their eccentric father. Drawn to the girls for reasons she didn't entirely understand, Kate eventually learned the family's secret: that Mockbeggar woods is home to a capricious, menacing ghost. A ghost who's not too happy about Kate. Now the woods are beginning to stir with their old magic, and Kate knows there's only one person who can help her avert catastrophe: Lucia, the most troubled of the Gonne sisters. Lucia, to whom she lost her heart so dangerously, all those years ago. From the acclaimed author of The Quick comes a hypnotic tale of sisterhood and first love, wonder and terror, the stories that tether us to the past, and the stories that offer a way forward. Enter Small Angels, if you dare.

I feel like I was reading this book for forever. It did go with me on a girls weekend in KC (where I live), then to Nashville and Memphis. Like the past week and a half, the book is a ride! It‘s a very slow burn, though interesting. Good payoff in the end. Good gothic horror.

I loved how storytelling was an important theme. I also loved how the woods were a character in their own right. This felt very much like a fairytale.

Was definitely a slow build though until the last 100 pages or so.

This is a gothic-lite book in my opinion. Very good read that‘s part spooky but overall a very sweet story. 4⭐️ #botm

I adored the blend of folklore and disquiet. The horror creeping slowly like vines in the dark forest as the story unfolded.

I‘m not sure how I feel about this book. Parts of the story are good, but it just didn‘t grab me. I love a good ghost story, but this one just didn‘t do it for me. I didn‘t find any of the characters likable. I got bored while reading, but I did manage to finish the book.

I don‘t generally enjoy stories where characters embrace their role as victim. However, Owen gives us a fairly well written, spooky tale and the plot kept me reading even when I wanted to throw the book across the room. The
Gonne family made a pact with a ghostly entity to serve him with rituals in exchange for the relative success of their winery. Lucia, fully believing herself evil, becomes his friend. Redemption is too little too late.

Guys, I am seriously loving this one so much! I just hit the halfway point and I'm really in love! I started it thinking it was just going to be a regular run of the mill spooky story, and while it is unsettling, it's so much more than a spooky story. The lore is deep and fascinating, and the writing is absolutely beautiful! 💕📚

A BOTM win!

I really enjoyed this slow, atmospheric, beautifully written story—a little bit fantasy, horror, ghost story, and romance, it all comes together beautifully. I loved Lucia and Kate, all of the side characters, and the fact that Mockbeggar Woods is a whole character itself.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Started off loving this slow burn of a novel with secrets of a small town‘s past and its woods, Mockbegger, and the guardians that keep the nearby village safe with their quirky ways, but it became a bit long and repetitive for me in the end. I liked Lucia, she sort of reminded me of a more lucid Merricat, & I like the author‘s nod to Little Women and Wind in the Willows. Atmospheric and some beautiful descriptions, but longer isn‘t always better

Small Angels is a novel about the importance of stories. It‘s a ghost story, a tale of a small village and sentient trees, and a story of 3 sisters who grow up isolated from the neighborhood because of the misdeeds of an ancestor. While at times the story is creepy, it‘s beautifully written. Enter the realm of Mockbeggar Woods, if you‘re brave enough, and be sure to come with stories to share.

#grateful for a 5 ⭐️ listen. This is my favorite kind of book, lit tinged in magic. The story was dark at times but well told. The accents were perfection for the story and the verbiage. It was so much, I feel like I may have a book hangover and need to revisit some high points. @Eggs

This was one of those books that I hated to put down. When I would pick it back up it would take me a bit to get back into the story, but I think that is the magic of the story. The magic that wraps itself around you just like the forest. #20in4 @Andrew65

I‘m digging gothic fiction this summer, and this was a great #botm choice! High on the creep factor 👻

Only one family has been allowed to know the secrets of Mockbeggar Woods, and only that family can keep the town and Small Angels church safe. When Chloe and Sam decide to reopen Small Angels for their wedding, spirits in the woods become restless and the town and family will have a reckoning.

ferskner I just finished this and loved it too! 2y
Cinfhen I love that word choice - reckoning!! It sounds so ominous 😁 2y

A small English village, scary woods that no one wants to enter into, a family that keeps to itself, and a church that's been closed up for years. This fantastical tale strikes the right balance of creepy, gothic horror, and suspense. This book also gave me serious Bronte vibes and I loved how the author created the perfect atmosphere for the setting and the story. Are the legends told simply folk tales or are they the truth?

I did it, I joined #BOTM! I heard that their publishing of it is below what you would get at a normal retailer so I‘m hoping this isn‘t the case! I‘m excited to get my first book!

swishandflick The only notable difference that I've personally seen are the occasional books that have texture incorporated in the publishers version of the cover that isn't there for the BOTM version. 2y

Idk about everyone else, but I'm absolutely in love with the selections this month 🤩🤩 I enjoyed Lauren Owen's The Quick, which got really dismal reviews--so I think that's a good indication this one will be a winner!

This is the first time in a while I have any desire to fill my box with three books...now I need to pick my other two! #botm
