West with Giraffes
West with Giraffes | Lynda Rutledge
An emotional, rousing novel inspired by the incredible true story of two giraffes who made headlines and won the hearts of Depression-era America. "Few true friends have I known and two were giraffes..." Woodrow Wilson Nickel, age 105, feels his life ebbing away. But when he learns giraffes are going extinct, he finds himself recalling the unforgettable experience he cannot take to his grave. It's 1938. The Great Depression lingers. Hitler is threatening Europe, and world-weary Americans long for wonder. They find it in two giraffes who miraculously survive a hurricane while crossing the Atlantic. What follows is a twelve-day road trip in a custom truck to deliver Southern California's first giraffes to the San Diego Zoo. Behind the wheel is the young Dust Bowl rowdy Woodrow. Inspired by true events, the tale weaves real-life figures with fictional ones, including the world's first female zoo director, a crusty old man with a past, a young female photographer with a secret, and assorted reprobates as spotty as the giraffes. Part adventure, part historical saga, and part coming-of-age love story, West with Giraffes explores what it means to be changed by the grace of animals, the kindness of strangers, the passing of time, and a story told before it's too late.

Starting this novel while waiting for my MIL to get finished up with a procedure in the hospital.

Prairiegirl_reading If you haven‘t already, Google the image of the truck they actually used to transport the giraffes. It really helped me because I was having trouble picturing what it looked like. Enjoy! And I hope everything goes well for your MIL. 😄 6d

⭐️⭐️⭐️ Started slow, but kept me interested about halfway through. I like historical fiction and this was filled with it. Ended up being a nice read.

This book is about the resilience of beings, the power of stories, and how relationships with humans and animals impact our journey. If you enjoy historical fiction, animals, and are looking for a quirky escape, you‘ll likely find enjoyment in this book. Overall, it is a cute and charming tale. I appreciated that it provided a look into a historical moment that was previously unknown. Full review: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/56449476

I picked up West with Giraffes not knowing really anything about it and found it very enjoyable. I felt connected to Boy and Girl and invested in their journey. Woody, Red and the Old Man each gave an insight into the human condition. I read this on the heels of The Four Winds, which gave an in-depth look at the Dust Bowl. That detail made this story even richer. A truly unique journey to learn about!

@ncsufoxes The book arrived yesterday (thank you for the VDay card). I started reading the book last night, and I‘m loving it. @kellyann28 I‘m sending the other book your way today. My apologies for the delay; Work has been hectic. @Laughterhp #lmpbc

BookBosomed1 @kellyann28 I sent the book yesterday! I wrote you a note about the state of the book‘s cover thinking it was your book. When I got home, I remembered it was the book chosen by @Laughterhp. @Laughterhp the book cover ripped; I tried to repair it as best as I could. 3mo

This was a very interesting story, a likely fictional account of a fact based event that happened in the 1938 and told by a old man in present day who‘s over 100. I‘m an animal lover, like Jones and Woody I don‘t have much respect for people who treat them poorly. Book #9 in 2022

Finished this #LMBPC book today during lunch. It was such a sweet story with many adventures along the way. I forget how much change was happening in the US during the 1930s. I loved the connection between the giraffes with the people they trusted as they traveled to the San Diego zoo. We love the SD zoo & all their work & conservation of so many animals. It‘s definitely a wonderful place to visit & you forget you are in downtown SD.

ncsufoxes This also gives me bingo for the month, #bookspinbingo 4mo

Trying to finish the tagged book so I can get it mailed out next week for #LMBPC. As you can see we love giraffes, this was at the San Diego zoo. On the weekends if you get there at just the right time you can buy biscuits & get to feed the giraffes. My son loved it, one of the best experiences. We have been zoo pass holder on & off over the last 10 years we‘ve lived in San Diego. We‘ve been lucky to live so close to such a great zoo &safari park.

mandarchy Have you read the book Neck and neck by Elise Parsley? Everything she writes is so funny. 4mo

Read this for one of my book clubs. A sweet depression era story of a roadtrip across country with two giraffes. Though a tad slow at times, it includes a bit of action, a bit of a love story (not a romance though) and adorable giraffes. A easy read that I give 3.5⭐️

This historical fiction but true to the fact two Giraffes survive a hurricane to take a long road trip to California. We follow a young boy who becomes infatuated by them and follows them during their travels. This was a fascinating story, the writing style was hard for me to follow at first but then midway I became use to it. If you love animals this story is a good one. #BookSpinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

I just noticed that I copied in the wrong review for this book. I absolutely loved this book! If I didn‘t already love giraffes, I love them even more now. Imagine escorting giraffes across the country in the 1930‘s! The characters in this sorry are likable. I didn‘t want this book to end!

Nute I don‘t think that I have ever heard of this book though the cover looks familiar. It sounds really good! Stacking! 12mo
