The Litigators | John Grisham

Pickpick

A team of 3 rather bumbling lawyers take on big pharma and their oh-so-competent corporate lawyers in an effort to win a big settlement and get rich. Lighthearted and funny, but also thought provoking. What is - and what should be - the role of lawsuits in today‘s society? Are lawyers more often a force for good - or bad - in the US? Would make a good book club choice.

I was expecting to love this book, but found it a bit too silly for my taste. I think I will enjoy it on Netflix, though.

West with Giraffes | Lynda Rutledge

A well written story about an orphaned teenage boy who accompanies two giraffes on a cross country road trip during the 1930s. Based on true events. A strong sense of time and place, and an insightful look at depression-era culture and society.

A broken-hearted woman finds an old diary. Parallel plot lines ensue. I sometimes got confused about which plot line belonged to which set of characters, but it all made sense in the very surprising ending.

It‘s on its way to you, @Reggie ! Hope you enjoy! #LMPBC #GroupS @Jerdencon @Deblovestoread @suvata

Excellent review of 5 basic habits for Christians to practice to build their faith, no matter where they are in their faith journey. Written in Adam Hamilton‘s approachable, “non-preachy” style.

Humorous essays about author Bill Bryson‘s move back to the USA after 20 years abroad. First published in 1999, so some of the essays are a bit dated (particularly the ones about technology), but are still good for a chuckle. And there are a few actual laugh-out-loud moments. Originally written as newspaper columns, the pieces are short and quick to read. Great to keep on hand for a brief, uplifting humor break during a busy or stressful day.

Clwojick Sounds great! I‘ve heard tons of great things about this author. 1y
dabbe I am not lying. I laughed so hard I peed reading A Walk in the Woods. And if you grew up in the 50s-60s, The Thunderbolt Kid is for you. His book on Shakespeare was fascinating as well. LOVE this guy. 🤣❣️🤣 1y

julieclair @Clwojick @dabbe I definitely want to read more of his books. I had no idea he had a book on Shakespeare! 1y
dabbe @julieclair I didn't either until a teacher told me about it. It's titled Shakespeare: The World as a Stage, and it was informative and funny (a Bryson trademark!). 1y
julieclair @dabbe Thanks for the heads up about Shakespeare. I‘ve added it to my TBR stack. 👍 1y

An absolute sweet gem of a book! Page after page of bookish art and bookish quotes. Plus a few short, excellent essays about the reading life from Ann Patchett, Gretchen Rubin and Maura Kelly. A book to savor, a page or two at a time. Perfect for a quick 5-minute escape whenever needed!

Thank you @Pigpen_Reads for choosing this for me for #TrappedOnAnIsland this month!

Wow. What great storytelling. A sad, but ultimately hopeful tale about the desperation of life during the Great Depression, the resilience of the human spirit, and the importance of found family. The story highlights that there are good people to be found even in the worst circumstances, but the descriptions of those circumstances definitely tug at your heartstrings. ⬇️

julieclair An excellent book club selection, with many topics to discuss, including the relatively unknown and tragic story of the Native American boarding schools. 1y

Fantastic pick by @TheBookHippie for #SundayBuddyRead. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Historical fiction about 4 smart, strong women who are sisters-in-law, and part of a mob family. They all have secrets - big ones. And, they all have a fierce love and loyalty to their family. The characters are fictional, but many of the gangsters with whom they interact were real. Fascinating.
