Still catching up on September reviews... Read this with the #pemberlittens
It was an interesting depiction of the British and Indian relationship through colonisation but the characters weren't very likeable and the ending was disappointing. The daily discussions with the #hashtagbrigade were always enjoyable though

The image above sums up my feelings about this book; they were all over the place. Forster's writing is gorgeous as usual, but I had a difficult time caring about any of these characters, British or Indian. The motives behind the characters' actions were vague and noncommittal. The so-called exotic atmosphere was tainted--similar in a way to Joyce's “Araby“. I walked away unenlightened and depressed. Thank goodness for @BarkingMadRead's hashtags!

I've always loved E. M. Forster's writing. I enjoyed rereading this novel and seeing the commentary from the #PemberLittens and #HashtagBrigade. @BarkingMadRead. It's sad that Forster's observations about racism, classism and sexism still seem so relevant today.

I finished my 9th book of #SummerEndReadathon. I can honestly say that I didn't enjoy this one even remotely close to how much I enjoyed A Room With A View. I didn't like the characters and how women were portrayed. @TheSpineView

Forster‘s look at British occupied India in the 1920s certainly scratches the surface of culture & caste clauses, not to mention imperial rule and the desire to break free. The novel also examines friendship and betrayal and in a way redemption. Admittedly, I struggled through parts of this…I‘m not as well versed in my history of India, especially during British rule. I‘m so glad to have read this one with the #PemberLittens #HashtagBrigade because it just wasn‘t the classic for me. Without the group, I would have powered through this audio in a few days and missed a lot of the details that I did appreciate.

Instead of coming away feeling like I should give people who “aren't like me“ the benefit of the doubt because they're probably good people, I feel like I shouldn't trust them OR the people who “are like me“ because everyone sucks 😂 7mo

Morr_Books I too agree with what everyone is saying. What was up with all the comments of women being ugly or beautiful? It was so frustrating. I liked A Room with a View and its characters much better. 7mo

Bklover I ended up really loving this book overall. I think mainly because I learned a lot. I knew next to nothing about this place and time in history. The characters all drove me nuts though, and in the end were pretty much unlikeable. @jenniferw88 thank you for all your insights- you were very helpful! 7mo

dabbe I agree with ALL of you! I never would have finished if it wasn't for the always-hilarious #hashtagqueen @BarkingMadRead and the notes from @jenniferw88. I would have BAILED. The word I kept thinking while reading was “awkward.“ Everyone seemed awkward with each other, but I appreciate Forster making both sides have unlikable characters (though colonizing is bad!). Give me ROOM WITH A VIEW over this. Glad I made it through with all of you! 🤗 7mo

Daisey @dabbe I completely get the confusion here. When she‘s talking about the incident at one point she can‘t even clearly say whether anything really happened at all, so why blame someone? I really want more specific answers than the British are colonizers and therefore horrible people. 7mo

TheAromaofBooks I do feel somewhat bad for Adela because I don't think she exactly realized what she was setting off/she was getting so much peer pressure to continue the prosecution even when she tentatively tried to voice doubts. But it also doesn't seem fair for her to just get off without paying anything when Aziz's life has been sent into complete disarray and complications! 7mo

Morr_Books I agree with what everyone is saying about Aziz. I also really don't know my overall feelings for the Mrs. Moore character. I am not sure I like how upset everyone in the story is about her death when she up and left India, abandoning Aziz, Adela, etc. 7mo

I understood her having this sort of internal/spiritual shake up, but it seemed a little bizarre that hearing some echoing voices was enough to make her reject all of her religious beliefs and descend into complete apathy!? I felt so bad for her - she didn't have anyone to talk it out with, to offer her reassurances or alternate views. 😕 7mo

dabbe @TheAromaofBooks This has been a strange book for me on the whole: I mean, what was even the point of having her in the book and then killing her offstage? And what the heck is the big deal about an echo? Caves echo; get used to it, people.

The wording has been bizarre in places, too, plus how people talk to each other. But, maybe that's the point. We're supposed to feel weird because they feel weird relating to one another. 🤷‍♀️ 7mo

TheAromaofBooks @dabbe - This book has done a great job capturing a general sense of unease and uncertainty, the fragility of a system that assumes everyone “knows their place“ and can't handle anyone deciding they don't like that place. But as a story... it's been somewhat lacking for me 😂 7mo

AnnR I think Ronny just wanted to make certain his mother couldn't testify and Mrs. Moore wasn't feeling well enough (mentally or physically) to argue. Otherwise, I totally get everyone's comments above. Self-absorbed characters and a lot of unproductive blah, blah, blah. 7mo

#HashtagBrigade I wanted to love this, since I loved the first three books by Forster that I‘ve read. And sometimes I did love it. The language is lush and beautiful. The descriptions of the Hindu and Muslim faiths were entrancing. The prejudices of the different races and religions were very apparent. Except I‘ve never understood racism and religionism. The exchange between Aziz and Mrs. Moore in the mosque and the exchange between (cont)⬇️

CatLass007 Aziz and Mrs. Moore‘s son, Ralph, were almost dreamlike. And I still want to bash everyone‘s heads together for their stupid behavior. Maybe I don‘t understand the mindset of any character in this book. Maybe that‘s what made it so difficult for me to make it through. But it‘s been so many years since I read anything by Forster that I‘m considering re-reading it to see how my perspective has changed. And I‘d try reading more Forster also. 7mo

willaful This was a complicated chapter. Adela is so confused and suggestible -- perhaps normal after being traumatized like this. There's nothing that explains why she ever thought it was Aziz to begin with. She's definitely a very unreliable witness. That's probably not going to help poor Aziz though. :-( 7mo

dabbe Just like the song from Urban Cowboy: Adela was “Looking for love in all the wrong places.“ She and Aziz were talking about marriage right before Aziz went into a cave. Then she's thinking all about Ronny and how she doesn't love him and goes into a cave. Throughout the whole book, she's always 👀 for something better. Heat (it was hot) can bring about hallucinations, too. And there's the guide with his head to the side until he runs away. 🤔 (edited) 7mo

Bklover I remember The Key to Rebecca! I loved all his stand-alone books. Most weren‘t chunksters and had more of a thriller vibe if I recall correctly (which means I definitely could be wrong!). I loved The Third Twin, Eye of the Needle, and Whiteout. @Cinfhen 7mo

Question for @jenniferw88 and anyone else who‘s read this before… #Hashtagbrigaide is about 1/4 of the way through now and I‘m excited about reading something written in ‘24 that was already exploring race relations and colonialism, and there are passages of exquisite writing that pop up occasionally and make me happy, BUT most of the time this just makes me angry,⬇️⬇️⬇️

IndoorDame both cause most of our expat characters are so detestable that listening to them talk is painful, and cause it‘s grating to see the ways this is clearly a white foreigner‘s perspective … I‘m wondering if this is going to turn into a story I‘m likely to get lost in, or just continue on explicating life there in the same fashion? 7mo

jenniferw88 I'd suggest trying to get to just after the caves (chapter 17), as I'm not sure. If it helps I can post a comment with spoilers. 7mo
