Tropic of Cancer
Tropic of Cancer | Henry Miller
Shocking, banned and the subject of obscenity trials, Henry Miller's first novel Tropic of Cancer is one of the most scandalous and influential books of the twentieth centuryTropic of Cancer redefined the novel. Set in Paris in the 1930s, it features a starving American writer who lives a bohemian life among prostitutes, pimps, and artists. Banned in the US and the UK for more than thirty years because it was considered pornographic, Tropic of Cancer continued to be distributed in France and smuggled into other countries. When it was first published in the US in 1961, it led to more than 60 obscenity trials until a historic ruling by the Supreme Court defined it as a work of literature. Long hailed as a truly liberating book, daring and uncompromising, Tropic of Cancer is a cornerstone of modern literature that asks us to reconsider everything we know about art, freedom, and morality.'At last an unprintable book that is fit to read' Ezra Pound 'A momentous event in the history of modern writing' Samuel Beckett 'The book that forever changed the way American literature would be written' Erica Jong Henry Miller (1891-1980) is one of the most important American writers of the 20th century. His best-known novels include Tropic of Cancer (1934), Tropic of Capricorn (1939), and the Rosy Crucifixion trilogy (Sexus, 1949, Plexus, 1953, and Nexus, 1959), all published in France and banned in the US and the UK until 1964. He is widely recognised as an irreverent, risk-taking writer who redefined the novel and made the link between the European avant-garde and the American Beat generation.

What an interesting question! I seem to be saying this very often, Elena Greco-, Lyra Belacqua and Elizabeth Benett. My husband's is any of Henry Miller's alter egos in his books, he admires his freedom! I think he just admires his exploits 😂😀

Day Six:

This book was banned in the United States for 27 years after it was first published in Paris in 1934. It's extremely sexually graphic and is the story (part memoir/part fiction) of a young writer and his friends in Paris and all the shenanigans that ensue.

I love me a dirty banned book! For once, I can actually see why the censors kicked up such a fuss - there is a LOT of filth. That said, Miller wrote more about food than he did sex (understandable, given that he was literally a starving artist at the time of writing). Tropic of Cancer isn't stream-of-consciousness, but it's something adjacent to it. Full review: http://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/tropic-of-cancer-henry-miller/ #BannedBooks

I can understand why, at the time, this was controversial and I can see why it‘s an important book. However. It did nothing for me. It was too crass for the sake of being “avant- garde” for me.

I almost never abandon a book - I can't remember the last time I did it, but this? I can't seem to find a plot, nor any likeable characters. I don't mind the writing style - it reminds me of someone but I can't remember who. And some of the descriptions - I don't think I'm a prude but they made me physically nauseous. Read something else.

Giving this a so-so. While I disliked most of it, and rage read good portions of it, the writing is brilliant and breathtaking at times and does represent a breakthrough in literary history. But it is also deeply misogynist and racist in a way that can't simply be written off as 'the times.' It's been compared to Whitman but to me it's the antithesis —so preoccupied with darkness, death and decay. Whitman inspires me. This is just depressing.

This was a rough read for me for a couple of reasons:
1. Stream of consciousness writing is not my cup of tea,
2. I like to have a plot/storyline and there was none and
3. The sexism and racism really bothered me.

The only reason why I finished the book was because every now and then the literary brilliance shone through.

I read it faster than it was planned for the read along, because I just wanted to get it over with! 😬

PurpleyPumpkin @BarbaraTheBibliophage Nope, definitely not just you! I'm gonna finish this if it kills me because I know I'm unlikely to revisit it in future. You all have inspired me to get through this! 7y
KVanRead @BarbaraTheBibliophage Yes, I have definitely thought that more than once. Makes me glad we are all ploughing through together. Solidarity! 😂 I have not found the introduction that helpful. Mine anyway, by Karl Shapiro is just a tad hyperbolic and seems more of an apology/defense of Miller in general than an intro to a specific book. He does bring up Whitman and Miller being more like a poet which I see...also Joyce, Lawrence, Thoreau. For me... 7y
KVanRead he feels more like Thoreau - have yet to tackle Joyce and way too long since I read Lawrence. I love Whitman and his 'earthiness' is just so much more palatable to me 😊 7y

Of the little I've read so far, he certainly led an interesting life! #TOC #bannedbookchallenge #bannedbookreadathon #bannedbookreading #TOCreadathon

BarbaraTheBibliophage LOL. Interesting to say the least! His perspective on so many social issues is definitely old school, but sadly still in evidence today. I'm behind now too. I need to read this week's portion! 8y
Kathrin @BarbaraTheBibliophage Old school is a very nice way to put it... archaic was the word on my mind today while reading. 😆 But you are right, these sentiments are still around. 8y
Kathrin I might have to make a fast read out of this one... my library loan is due in 3 days! 😱 8y

Kathrin @BarbaraTheBibliophage I'll try, I just hope nobody put a hold on it in the meantime! 8y
PurpleyPumpkin @BarbaraTheBibliophage @Kathrin It definitely seems to be a book of it's time. It's jarring at times, but I'm finding it intriguing. Well, so far anyway. We'll see! 8y
KVanRead @PurpleyPumpkin @BarbaraTheBibliophage @Kathrin I'm just starting this week's portion. So far my reactions are all over the place. Sometimes I find the writing just bombastic, other times beautiful. So far he is either blowing me away with his writing or blowing me away with his anti-semitism and sexism. Is anyone else finding this particularly hard to take given our current political news? 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @KVanRead I feel the same way. Miller's racism and sexism are horrible. I'd definitely be less disturbed if the news wasn't full of the election coverage. 7y
Kathrin @KVanRead I agree. I find the reason for banning the book in the first place ridiculous and the half pornographic content is nothing compared to the sexism. But back in the day, writing porn was worse than objectifying women... well sometimes it feels like nothing has changed. 🤔 7y
KVanRead @kathrin @BarbaraTheBibliophage well I guess that's progress 😊 Although judging from recent reactions in the news It see some are still more bothered by 'lewdness' than misogyny😞 7y

Just finished up chapter 7 and I think I can recognize a pattern... the waves 🌊 in the background is the steam of consciousness. #TOC
