In high school, I could not STAND The Scarlet Letter. After revisiting it in college, I found a weirdness in Hawthorne and fell in love. A colleague just gave me a box of books and I found this gem - I think the 'connections' section is what makes this edition for me. #TeachersofLitsy #TOC

What? Now the heroine finds that the potential bad guy has a banned book (which a group of Littens just read together)! And she better know, even if he's not a killer, he's a wacko dude if he's reading this racist, misogynistic book. 😱😱

#toc #tocreadalong #coincidentalreading

PurpleyPumpkin No kidding! 😂 7y
KVanRead Lol! Run. Away. The reading coincidences are strong with this one. Love how that happens. 7y

2.5 stars Have you ever known a twenty-something young man who arrogantly believes he knows everything about everything? This is 319 pages of that guy, mostly while he's drunk or high. It's just a whiny bigoted blog, albeit with moments of brilliance.

beagle.mama Isn't this the book Jerry owed the library in that Seinfeld episode? The one with the librarian named Mr. Bookman. 7y
PurpleyPumpkin I am still struggling with this one! Ugh, I'll be glad when I'm done. I'm gonna finish it because I don't think l be going back to it. Ever. 😕 7y
DGRachel Kudos to you for sticking it out (I'm so glad I bailed!). 🤓 7y

LauraBeth I can remember being in my early 20s and having someone in their 40s say, "if you ever meet a man and he tells you he likes Henry Miller, run far, far away..." 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @beagle.mama Believe it or not, I didn't watch that show. I've only seen a few episodes. But, I did think of it while reading this book, which is also about a whole lot of nothing. 😎 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @PurpleyPumpkin @DGRachel I just decided to power through it this weekend. I hated seeing it waiting all the time. But ugh. 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @LauraBeth Wise words! 😎 7y
DGRachel @LauraBeth 😂😂😂😂 7y
Kathrin @LauraBeth And now we know why!! 😂😂😂 7y
Kathrin Okay... so what are we going to tackle next???? 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Kathrin I'm open to suggestions! What do you think? 7y
Kathrin @BarbaraTheBibliophage If we stay with banned books and avoid books that have been banned for obscenity (#toomuchpenis) then how about... 7y
KVanRead Was planning to finish it last week, but after Tuesday it was pretty much the last thing I wanted to read. It's due back at the library tomorrow but I just can't do it right now. I'm so close to done. Ugh. Maybe tomorrow. 7y
KVanRead When I return TOC I'm picking up my next read which also happens to be a banned book 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @kvanread Persepolis is one of the last few books I have on my list for the #ReadHarder challenge! @Kathrin I'd be up for reading about snow and cold in Russia during my winter. It'll make me feel warm! 7y
Kathrin @BarbaraTheBibliophage Persepolis sounds interesting! 7y
KVanRead @BarbaraTheBibliophage I'm reading it for ReadHarder as well! 7y

Well, this isn't exactly a #bookandbrew, but my rye & soda with a splash of ginger ale is my go-to drink at the end of a long work day. This is my current read and it's making me cranky! I'm aiming to finish it by the weekend. *fingers crossed* #TOC #TOCreadathon

I finally don't hate this book. Not that I love it, but I've settled into his odd cadence of non-story telling writing. Still struggling with his incredible bigoted nature though. Almost caught up too.

JanuarieTimewalker13 @BarbaraTheBibliophage I really liked TOCancer...Henry Miller seemed like a fun guy...there's a great video of him on YouTube:"Asleep and Awake", I watched it about 5 years ago...tried to get into TOCap, but put it down...one day I will try again! 7y

😂😂😂This is probably my favorite part of this crazy book so far. Weirdly, I find it to be the most profound and the funniest bit I've read. Miller's unabashed embrace of the sh*t of life, both figurative and literal is pretty off-putting most of the time, but here it works! #TOC #TOCreadalong #bannedbookchallenge @Kathrin @BarbaraTheBibliophage @PurpleyPumpkin @gibblr @katedfisher

BarbaraTheBibliophage I have to agree. I liked this part the most of what I've read so far. It is the closest to storytelling Miller has gotten so far. 💩 7y

This was a rough read for me for a couple of reasons:
1. Stream of consciousness writing is not my cup of tea,
2. I like to have a plot/storyline and there was none and
3. The sexism and racism really bothered me.

The only reason why I finished the book was because every now and then the literary brilliance shone through.

I read it faster than it was planned for the read along, because I just wanted to get it over with! 😬

#TOC

BarbaraTheBibliophage I have to agree with all three of your points. I'm behind my goals and it just doesn't bother me! 😜 7y
gibblr Agreed. I'm a week behind because I've had other really good reads going and this one is just not my thing! Props on finishing so quickly! 7y
PurpleyPumpkin Considering you didn't really enjoy it, good for you for finishing! I'm behind on our reading schedule, but I find that when I get back to reading it, I just push through. And then I don't want to go back to it for a while. 😒 7y

katedensen Definitely a tough read, which is probably why so many of us have fallen behind. Kudos to you for finishing despite hating it! 7y
KVanRead Yup. I'm reading chunks and then taking long breaks. Congrats on finishing. 👏Words that describe my reading experience thus far: ick, wow, ew, hahaha, meh, hmmm, arghh, woah, huh, and holy crap! 😂@PurpleyPumpkin @BarbaraTheBibliophage @katedfisher @gibblr 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Has anyone else thought this? "If it wasn't for our group read, I'd have bailed on this book already!" I find myself thinking it and also doing some skimming. Is it just me? ? @katedfisher @gibblr @KVanRead @PurpleyPumpkin 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage And I also started wondering if reading the introduction would elucidate anything. 7y
PurpleyPumpkin @BarbaraTheBibliophage Nope, definitely not just you! I'm gonna finish this if it kills me because I know I'm unlikely to revisit it in future. You all have inspired me to get through this! 7y
KVanRead @BarbaraTheBibliophage Yes, I have definitely thought that more than once. Makes me glad we are all ploughing through together. Solidarity! 😂 I have not found the introduction that helpful. Mine anyway, by Karl Shapiro is just a tad hyperbolic and seems more of an apology/defense of Miller in general than an intro to a specific book. He does bring up Whitman and Miller being more like a poet which I see...also Joyce, Lawrence, Thoreau. For me... 7y
KVanRead he feels more like Thoreau - have yet to tackle Joyce and way too long since I read Lawrence. I love Whitman and his 'earthiness' is just so much more palatable to me 😊 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @KVanRead I have the same edition. Thanks for saving me the time! And I'm hanging in if you are - yay Littish solidarity! 😝 7y
