The Hunger Games
The Hunger Games | Suzanne Collins
First in the ground-breaking HUNGER GAMES trilogy. Set in a dark vision of the near future, a terrifying reality TV show is taking place. Twelve boys and twelve girls are forced to appear in a live event called The Hunger Games. There is only one rule: kill or be killed. When sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen steps forward to take her younger sister's place in the games, she sees it as a death sentence. But Katniss has been close to death before. For her, survival is second nature.

I must say this book was way better than what I assumed. I am beyond eager to listen to the next one. But I must say through it all my favorite character was Rue. I hoped that's how it's spelled considering I listened via audiobook. It's a shame Rue had to die, and so now we know the ones that dies turn into beast.

LibrarianRyan It is good. I remember being in the theater and you could tell the people who read the book and who hadn't because it was such a big deal when Rue dies. But in the movie it was just a blip. 3w

The New York Times Best Seller, The Hunger Games is a SF written by Suzanne Collins. It is a great book for an IR. The Hunger Games are a yearly event where they gather 24 children between the ages of 12-18 to fight to the death. Katniss Everdeen volunteers for her younger sister Prim and now has to kill people in order to stay alive. Can she win these games or will she suffer and die like her fellow tributes? #UCFLAE3414F19

JRone UDL strategy 2.1 Clarify vocabulary and symbols would be perfect to help with some of the vocab words in the book children might not recognize. ESOL strategy #17 Provide contextual support through audio, visuals, models,
demonstrations, realia, body language and facial expressions would help an ESOL student have multiple ways to understand some of the text they might not get. The movie could also help here!

The Hunger Games written by Suzanne Collins is a SF novel that would be a great LC or IR in your classroom. The book is about a young girl named Katniss Everdeen and 23 other kids who fight for their life to survive the Hunger Games, only one is allowed to come out alive. Award: Hal Clement Award

AlyssaB An UDL strategy would be 7.3 minimize threats and distraction. An ESOL strategy would be 3 encourage self-talk. A great resource would be http://teacher.scholastic.com/resources/hunger-games-for-teachers/ which gives resources on all three books. #UCFLAE3414F19 1mo

Winning the Hal Clement and Dorothy Canfield Fisher awards, The Hunger Games book 1 is a SF novel that is near and dear to my heart and I feel would be a great addition to an elementary classroom. Revolving around a girl named Katniss who lives in District 12 under the Capital‘s rule in a nation that lies in the ruins of North America, readers follow her journey taken as she volunteers as tribute in a “fight to the death” match. #UCFLAE3414F19

TristanPool This book would be best used as a LC to promote a deeper understanding of the book‘s text features. UDL 3.2 with EL 6 would be a great pair to use for the LC as the students are presented with highlighted features and the teacher can continually monitor student comprehension. 1mo
TristanPool https://www.lacoe.edu/portals/0/lacoe/jcs/hunger%20games%20curr.%20guide.pdf is a great resource to use as it provides a weekly lesson overview aligned with standards that can be easily transformed and transferred to an elementary classroom. 1mo

This book was a great book I would rate it 5/10 I would highly recommend this to anyone who like book about action/adventure this book is about a girl named Katniss Everdeen who lives alone with her mother and little sister . In the beginning of the book it talks about the reaping the reaping is where they pick out a random name for the girls and the boy to fight to the death in the games.the mood of the book is happy and sad this is a great book

This is a science fiction about a girl named Katniss Everdeen and her fight for survival as she and 23 other kids fight to the death in the hunger games. This would be a great book to use for a dramatic reenactment to use in a middle or high school setting. #ucflae3414f19

ChrisC A good ELL strategy would be to place language in meaningful context so a student become successful language learners. The UDL principle to use would be 3.3 guide information processing, visualization, and manipulation to help with comprehension. 2mo

Well done! This was absolutely the best book I‘ve ever read. The book is about a girl named Katniss who has to go in the hunger games... and battles people from other districts. It‘s filled with romance and action. I can‘t say more because I would spoil it for sure. I would recommend this to anyone. Everyone must read this because it‘s SO good! I can‘t wait to read the next two books. I would rate this a 10/10.

Was trying to find something that is from a different series than ones I‘ve already used for #gory. All of these characters died in the first book. Marvel‘s death was quick, but the rest were gory, esp in the book. This series has a lot of horrific deaths (RIP Finnick).

Buechersuechtling @Rachel.Rencher But no, honestly, I can‘t imagine that this will be as captivating as the trilogy was for me. As far as I read there shall be a moral component to it like “How do we want to live? Who are we and what do we consider necessary to survive?” but at the moment I really can‘t see how this can lead to an overall enthralling story when it‘s – again – mainly set in a Hunger-Games-Arena … 🤷🏽‍♀️ 2mo
GingerAntics I enjoyed the trilogy, so I‘ll probably give it a shot. 2mo

rather_be_reading NO WAY! 2mo
Buechersuechtling Yeah, I feel the same. I mean, what do they mean❓ I did a quick research and it seems there will be a fourth volume. No sequel but a prequel to the “Hunger Games”. The story shall be set 64 years before the plot so far and tell about the “Dark Era” – a period of an unsuccessful rebellion in Panem. (Which I don‘t remember to have read about in the trilogy. Did I just forget❓🤔) But anyway, thanks a lot for your post. 2mo

A prequel to the triology was announced andirons not sure how I feel about this since it‘s been years from when the last book was written and when the last movie was released.

Maybe I am feeling this way cause I‘m reading The Testaments now and if you‘ve read The Testaments maybe you know what I‘m talking about.

What do you feel about this?

pilardib I'm curious to say the least. I really enjoyed the first and second books of the trilogy. And I also love prequels so... let's see :P 2mo
cherinium I know what you mean about The Testaments. I felt like it ruined the scary, mysterious vibe of Offred's story by answering too many questions. I think I'm more ok with this since it's a prequel, though. (Also, it's been many years since this world was visited on screen.) There's something different about that than a sequel that wasn't needed clearly written just to profit off the success of a tv show. 2mo
That-Bookish-Hiker @cherinium you make some good points and have changed my mind. This is what I love about litsy! I was on the fence because I was thinking “it‘s been so long!” But you make such an excellent point when you say it has been years since the movie so this doesn‘t feel like a new release just for profits. 2mo
That-Bookish-Hiker @pilardib let‘s hope it‘s good! 🤞🏼 2mo
cherinium @That-Bookish-Hiker Well, changing your mind was not my intention, but I agree that Litsy is a great platform for us to express our differing opinions. And if it does result in changed minds, there's nothing wrong with that! Having a mind open to change is so rare these days. I suppose we'll just have to wait and see if this new glimpse into Panem is worthwhile! 💕 2mo

My impressions of the book were definitely coloured by the film and, in an unexpected plot twist, I actually thought the film was better. The film had a subtlety that you just can‘t get when the teenage protagonist is spoon-feeding to you her every supposition. I probably wouldn‘t read The Hunger Games again but I‘d happily give my copy to a 13-year-old cousin. Full review here: http://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/the-hunger-games-suzanne-collins/

A perfect example telling you that a book is always better than the movie. This book is definitely worth reading. Teenagers and adults enjoy every inch of it. Usually, I need to read a minimum of 50-60 pages of a book to hold onto it for long. But, this book keeps you intrigued from the beginning itself. I was able to get this book done in just 3 days. You can't keep it aside once you start it. It's a brilliant start for the trilogy!

3,5 stars. Was never supposed to read this book because you can‘t really sell me anything with “sci-fi and dystopia”. It was better than I expected, but I will not jump on the hype train. You pretty much know the outcome of the story. You only get to really know a few characters. I‘m sure it works for YA readers, but it lacked something essential, if you ask me. Flows quite well, an easy read. I enjoyed the audio version.
