Memoirs of a Geisha
Memoirs of a Geisha | Arthur Golden
A literary sensation and runaway bestseller, this brilliant debut novel tells with seamless authenticity and exquisite lyricism the true confessions of one of Japan's most celebrated geisha.Speaking to us with the wisdom of age and in a voice at once haunting and startlingly immediate, Nitta Sayuri tells the story of her life as a geisha. It begins in a poor fishing village in 1929, when, as a nine-year-old girl with unusual blue-gray eyes, she is taken from her home and sold into slavery to a renowned geisha house. We witness her transformation as she learns the rigorous arts of the geisha: dance and music; wearing kimono, elaborate makeup, and hair; pouring sake to reveal just a touch of inner wrist; competing with a jealous rival for men's solicitude and the money that goes with it. In Memoirs of a Geisha, we enter a world where appearances are paramount; where a girl's virginity is auctioned to the highest bidder; where women are trained to beguile the most powerful men; and where love is scorned as illusion. It is a unique and triumphant work of fiction—at once romantic, erotic, suspenseful—and completely unforgettable. From the Trade Paperback edition.

My retail therapy today, certainly cheered me up although with a large collection of TBR books at home I think I've added another year to it....
My local op shop drop off this morning allowed me this indulgence, $1 each, bargain!

Lynnsoprano A lot of good choices! 2w
Curiouser_and_curiouser @Lynnsoprano thank you, cant wait. I already have so many, which have been patiently waiting for 17 years (my eldest child's age) for me to get to them, why not add another 11 books to my shelf? That being said, I have already read Memoirs of a Geisha about 20 years ago, but lost my copy, lucky to find another for $1 at the second hand shop! I think this means I'll have to read it again 😃 2w

Overall I think this is a good book but I felt it was a bit long and I honestly didn‘t really care for anyone in the book that much. I felt bad for the girl at times but she was mostly punished for being stupid and naive. I felt like there was no buildup to the romance, that the girl just pined for the guy half of her life. Other than that it‘s an interesting look into the life of a geisha. 3.5/5 stars.

Shout out to @Literary_Siren for gifting me this through #KindLitsy . I absolutely LOVED IT and I should have read it a long time ago! I enjoyed Arthur Golden's book on little Chiyo and her tumultuous life of adjusting to the competitive world of Geishas. This book was written beautifully with the most vivid allusions and metaphors, I was captivated from the beginning and felt drawn in and seduced more and more by each turn of the page.

Ah, what can I say about this book? Anything that I say will be less. I'll be honest though. I loved this book. For the most part of it, I wanted to give it a 5 star but then, the ending sort of bummed me. The strong independently Sayuri I had come to meet turned out to be a rather narrow-minded person.

Yet, I'd definitely#recommend this book to you. If you can, then definitely pick it up. It was a beautiful read!❤️

"Memoirs of a Geisha" was a fun read and was insightful to geisha life. I have started to do more research on the subject because I really didn't know anything about geshia's until I began reading Sayuri's tale. Drama, history, and a learning experience all wrapped up nicely into one novel.

Memoirs of a Geisha is a fantastic novel that takes you behind closed doors into a secret world of Geishas, the rivalry & unrequited love. The historical elements are written well. I recommend the film too so you can immerse yourself in the costumes, colours & artistic stage performances that was running through your head throughout the story.

I see why this is a favorite among so many people, now. This book took me longer to read than normal, but I had to keep putting it down to absorb what I'd just read. Memoirs follows the life of a geisha who was stolen and sold out of her home at the age of 9. She faces and overcomes many adversities on her journey to become a successful geisha. Arthur Golden portrayed the female perspective so eloquently, which was refreshing from a male author.
