Sanditon | Jane Austen

I‘m sure I‘ve read the novel fragment (though I don‘t remember much) but I loathe the show. As background, I loved Cranford, P&P, Forsyte Saga, Poldark, Bleak House, and North and South. I feel manipulated and the whole thing just seems silly and tawdry. Theo James appeared naked in front of the heroine (in lieu of chemistry) and I was like, oh puh-leeez. Austen meets PG Game of Thrones. Someone must have agreed, because they tanked it.

ScientistSam PG Game of Thrones was what I thought too! 15h

Christmas gift from my husband. I admit that I desperately wanted this edition because of the umbrellas on the cover. I‘m waiting to start the PBS series until I‘ve finished.

ValerieAndBooks Pretty! Especially compared to my paperback copy (still TBR) 😊! 2d
umbrellagirl @ValerieAndBooks I loved the penguin paperback too. That also had umbrellas. I was disappointed that there was so little of the novel written but I am eager to see how the characters end up on the show. 2d

Finished the 11 and a half chapters of Jane Austen‘s unfinished novel; watching the mini-series right now!

Daisey I watched the first episode tonight and I‘m going to need to track down a copy to read. 5d
CrowCAH @Daisey really only the first 15/20 minutes are the real content Jane wrote, otherwise it‘s Davies fan fiction of what might have been a possible conclusion for the story. 4d
Daisey Good to know. I hope to read it before finishing the series. My main question was really how short the incomplete work is in comparison to the story the show develops. I wouldn‘t have guessed it was quite that short. 4d

Reading Austen‘s unfinished novel, Sanditon, makes me sad all over again that she died so young. I wonder how the PBS series will end it? (This is the dust jacket on my edition.)

I'm a Bad Janeite. I have never read this last work of Jane Austen. In just these few Chapters you can see the Brilliance of what could have been. Awesome Audible version.

sprainedbrain I‘m planning to read the version completed by ‘Another Lady‘ soon. I‘ve read Jane‘s chapters before and I‘m interested to see how someone else finished it. 1w
Crinoline_Laphroaig @sprainedbrain I've heard about that one. Curious to hear your thoughts. Tag me when you review if you can. So I won't miss it. I've also have this essay to read. 1w

The start of a new year - 2020!

Looking forward to seeing the eight episode PBS Masterpiece mini-series starting on January 12!

umbrellagirl Oo I just got this for Christmas. Must read it before the series starts. 2w
Reviewsbylola I‘ve been meaning to read this. 2w
rubyslippersreads I‘ve heard the TV series is somewhat more “adult” than Austen intended. 😂 (edited) 2w

CrowCAH @umbrellagirl yes, you must! 2w
CrowCAH @Reviewsbylola what better time than now! It‘s short, just 12 chapters. Austen dies while she was working on this one. 2w
CrowCAH @rubyslippersreads we‘ll have to see. I‘ve heard good and bad things; keeping an open mind. 2w

Sanditon | Jane Austen

I always feel so sad reading Jane Austen's last work. But her sharpness of wit survived to the end, because even as her health was failing she still had the humour to poke fun at the hypochondriacs who found their way to English bathing resorts, and whom she must have encountered in number during her time living in Bath and visiting Lyme Regis. A bold sense of the ridiculous was a part of Jane Austen's genius and, it seems, it never left her.

Scochrane26 I‘ve never read this one. 3mo
johncadams @Scochrane26 It's actually really good. I've got it in a single, quite thin volume with Lady Susan and The Watsons! 3mo
Scochrane26 I‘ve read lady Susan after seeing the movie but don‘t think I‘ve read the other 2. Will have to look for them. 3mo

Pretty good even though Jane Austen only wrote 11 chapters.

Oxford University Press was kind enough to send me their new edition for review, and it casts new light on Sanditon and Austen's body of work leading up to her final, unfinished manuscript. It has a well-researched author bio, a note on the text, full chronology, and generous explanatory notes. A wonderful, fresh take on Austen's most experimental and poignant work!
